My wife had a liver transplant on 12/29.  It's remarkable how well she is doing today.  We are very lucky.  Her doctors are amazed at how far she's come in recovery.  They do say that barring anything

Damn shame, and I had forgotten about his paralysis. I remember the buildup between him and Mashburn before the ‘93 S16 matchup that UK easily won.

Dude....how did this thread go all day without someone posting Raul Malo?  Dude was fucking amazing.  Our wedding playlist had a shitload of Mavericks in the rotation.

And...add him and the Mavericks to the list of artists who I never got to see live.  Got some real regrets about this one.  The other one of the same era who stings the same way is Hal Ketchum.  Can't tell you how many times my wife and I were somewhere and a Hal song came on and we'd sing to each other with a drink in our hand, or just playing some Hal songs around the house on a Sunday afternoon.  Both artists were kind of a soundtrack of our early marriage, some care-free years.

I saw Raul at Gruene Hall in 2004 or so. He put on a good show.

CSB Warning...

So in, I think 1999 I spent the summer working on a ranch in Granby, CO, and I and a bunch of the staff attended the best concert I've ever been to--Red Rocks Amphitheater, Mavericks opening, followed by Dwight Yoakam, and finally Willie as the closer.

One of the girls that was with us (also on staff) disappeared during the Yoakam set, coming back later to tell us that she had her own ride back to the ranch.  That ride wouldn't bring her back until about two weeks had passed, and she explained she'd been traveling on the Mavericks tour bus as a groupie/band aid.

Ughh..only 55. Knew this was coming, my wife liked her books.

Sophie Kinsella, the USA TODAY bestselling English rom-com author of the "Shopaholic" series, has died. She was 55.

Kinsella's family announced her death in a post to Instagram Dec. 10: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy

…..

Kinsella announced in April 2024 that she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of aggressive brain cancer, at the end of 2022. She said she had undergone a "successful" surgery and continued to receive radiotherapy and chemotherapy at the University College Hospital in London.

Heads up folks - next week I plan on starting the 2026 Celeb death pool thread. So put on your thinking caps, do your research to see who is still alive  and check wiki and other sources to see if they are really a celebrity, then narrow it down to 10 picks

I was lucky enough to see the Mavericks twice.  One was at the Livestock Show here in Austin and they were amazing even with those crappy acoustics and the joy they played with was so contagious.  They are on a regular rotation on my Spotify.

Also was fortunate enough to see Hal Ketchum at ACL long ago.  It was also at the Expo Center as a kickoff to ACL that season.  He played over an hour straight acoustic, no band, no nothing.  It was amazing how good that show was.  He opened for Robert Earl, if I recall.

Frankly should have been on peoples death lists.  Didn’t have the look of someone that fades into retirement.

He had a good run of "Oh THAT guy is in this" movies in the mid to late 90's.

Pulp Fiction, The Mask, Usual Suspects, Blue Streak

Turns out he was around 30 when filming those, but looked 45.

Does Selena's dad count? Lol

Well regardless he dead

He was a celebrity to me.

RIP Dave Ward.

He was a friend and former co-worker for me. A genuinely good guy. He’ll be missed.

Little known fact but when Bobby Burton had a meeting with a plastic surgeon a few years ago and was asked what he had in mind, Burton handed over a headshot of Dave Ward and sat silent (actually he said “this is a shout out to Tito’s Vodka and the Loewy Law Firm”)

We often went to Kay’s after work.

Man, Dave Ward was a legend, and by all accounts I ever heard, a good dude. And yes, I saw him at Kay’s once.

Who the hell is Dave Ward?

Edit:  Nevermind, see Houston broadcaster...wouldn't know him since never lived in Houston

I can also vouch for the stories about Dave at Kay's.   He liked his booze.
