April 3Apr 3 I think Yuki will be in the running for points most weeks. He's gotten to be a pretty decent driver.
April 4Apr 4 Jesus, the balls of these drivers to take a crash like Doohan's (granted, a totally self-inflicted one) and be expected to go out the next day and take the first corner at 160 mph.
April 4Apr 4 That's why it's a young man's sport mostly. As the drivers age, they start to think about things like that. I think it's a big part of Checo's downfall.

I have seen some of the worst crashes at half-mile dirt tracks. And it is horrible to see and be so close, physically and emotionally, with the drivers. One of the worst I ever saw & heard was the night Sammy Swindell slammed right into the back of a push truck. The sound was scary Edited April 4Apr 4 by PittsburghTiger

No. Second car is their downfall. Checo has point blank said in Spanish interviews that he’s doesn’t think about death or injuries. It’s just not in their DNA…and he said that a year or two ago, with a family.
April 5Apr 5 Just finished watching from the DVR. Pretty interesting. Great lap by Max to pull that pole position. Pretty funny with Lawson and Yuki. Did make me laugh. I’m happy to see the Haas & Williams cars being in the mix.
April 5Apr 5 Max is a wizard. Car's been unimpressive/tricky all week, and he pulls that out of his ass. Don't know if he has much chance of holding off the McLarens (cleanly), but will certainly make things more entertaining.

April 5Apr 5 I’m ready for the circus to get back to Europe. These middle-of-the -night races suck. Preach. DVR for sure. Stay out of forums and social media and watch at a normal time in the morning without having a clue as to what happened.

George and Kimi qualified 5th and 6th, but Kimi was about .8 seconds off George on most runs during quali. George flubbed his last Q3 run and Kimi put it together, but he's still .3 off George. I think George will be very flattered by having a rookie teammate this season. The Merc actually appears to be the second best car. It'll be interesting to see how much Kimi gets up to speed by the end of the year. Ferrari still seem to be a bit of a inconsistent mess. Lewis is well off the pace again. Nice job by Charles to take advantage of George screwing up and grabbing 4th. That was the highest he could've got today. Unless there's a lot of weather and maybe even then, I see McLaren having significantly better race pace than everyone else. It'll be interesting to see if Lando and Max fight early on. Could allow Oscar to get another win.
April 5Apr 5 I think, and I agree with you, that by the halfway point of the season that the Mercedes will be solidly the second-best car. Where Max fits in the group remains to be seen. If they can get the front end figured out I think Max can make another run. I think it will be a lot of fun.

April 5Apr 5 I have no love for Max but damn he's just so good. Like @aggie08 and @Burt Macklin already said, the car isn't great and he's been fighting it, and then he turns in an all-timer at the very end of Q3. The dude is a legend.
April 5Apr 5 I don't know how to find the account consistently, but the one that does the overlays of qualy laps was outstanding for today. Almost identical placement for the 1st 60% of the race, then Lando has a car length lead at about 80-85%, and Max reels him in in the final bit and pips him at the line. edit - found his youtube Edited April 5Apr 5 by Mittens
April 6Apr 6 You can see Max late brakes on tight turns and is aggressive through the chicane, will Lando tries to carry speed.

I read/saw somewhere that Max braked a full 25m later on that last corner before the chicane and still made the apex, where he closed the entirety of that car length gap. That translates to about 0.23 seconds, which seems like nothing to us mere mortals, but must feel like an eternity at 180mph. Edited April 6Apr 6 by aggie08
April 6Apr 6 Pretty much a perfect race from Max... but, a snoozefest of a race I'd really be curious what Verstappen would do in the Mclaren this year
April 6Apr 6 How bad are the McLaren strategists? 2 of the best drivers in the undeniably fastest cars and then you don’t even try

How tough of a sell would it have been to tell Lando to give Oscar a go, and if he can't pass Max, they'll swap back on the last lap. No harm, no foul. Lando is treated like the clear cut #1, and I don't understand why. Edited April 6Apr 6 by aggie08
April 6Apr 6 Quote Lando is treated like the clear cut #1, and I don't understand why. It's McLaren and he is British.
April 6Apr 6 Is “slingshotting” allowed? I couldn’t understand why they didn’t have Piastri use his DRS to pass Norris and then have Norris use it to whip past Piastri and so on and so on to help them cut 0.3 seconds at a time. Then suddenly you have two cars on Max’s sides and someone is going to get by. The guys in black cars would have done it in SPEED RACER, and that’s a Japanese cartoon and this was the Japanese circuit.

April 6Apr 6 Author Ok, this is funny. I like Lando outside of the car, but in it he is just a gigantic bitch. & Edited April 6Apr 6 by NoName
April 6Apr 6 Agree on the McLaren pussy-strategy. Let Oscar have a shot. Lando is very good but, he hasn’t won shit, yet. Masterful weekend for Max. I enjoy Villeneuve as an announcer. He doesn’t go for theatrics he just calmly describes things. He mentioned during qualifying that Max just works on the car the whole weekend and then it comes together. Ferrari could have saved $446,000,000 by putting someone other than Hamilton in that seat if all he is going to do is hang around seventh-place all season, 10 seconds behind the kid who took his seat. This is nowhere similar to Ferrari hiring Michael Schumacher to fix their shit show. Listening to Hamilton bitch on the radio with the paisan is never not funny. Does Lance Stroll have to give back his salary to Daddy Stroll to somehow justify him still being in F1. It’s also time for Alonso to exit stage right. Yuki did, ok to eh, but no points at his home race. I do look forward to seeing the continuing battle between Lawson and Yuki. It’d be cool if Lawson settles in and starts to do well.

April 6Apr 6 That was one of the more boring races I can remember. These cars just lose way too much downforce following in high speed corners. It’s becoming a major issue.
April 6Apr 6 It’s true though. AM has gone from a reliably middle of the grid team to scrapping with kick/stake/sauber for last it seems. Stroll is stroll but I’m not seeing much of anything out of Fred lately.
April 6Apr 6 I think AM are more focused on next year than this year. It is surprising how far they have dropped off. And yeah, boring race and weird strategy by McLaren
April 6Apr 6 4 hours ago, PittsburghTiger said: Listening to Hamilton bitch on the radio with the paisan Pretty much the only good thing in the race other than the lulz of Yuki being behind Lawson for a bit. This had to be the most boring race of the last few years. Not one pass in the top 6.
April 6Apr 6 Medium and hard once agin basically the same tire. Even an 8 year old knows how to add some kind of strategy to watching paint dry in Japan Monaco already spiking the football after watching this parade. Edited April 6Apr 6 by ChickenSandwich
