ok so both of them are cheating at cornering firce just this once or did they just decide to check extra hard this time?

From what I've been reading, they've both been checked several times earlier this season and were never found to be under the limit.

Formula One Technical Checks carried out by the FIA

Other checks during qualifying:
After the cars have been weighed they are always subjected to a number of additional checks which are carried out using a flat surface onto which the cars are pushed. This surface has weighing scales built in and is used to routinely check all the bodywork dimensions listed below at the same time as the weighing procedure. The whole process, including weighing is normally carried out in around two minutes.

Overall car width (Art.3.3)
Width ahead of the rear wheel centre line (Art.3.4)
Width behind the rear wheel centre line (Art.3.5)
Overall height (Art.3.6)
Front bodywork height (Art.3.7)
Height in front of the rear wheels (Art.3.8)
Height between the rear wheels (Art.3.9)
Height behind the rear wheel centre line (Art.3.10)
Rear wing blockage (Art.3.10)
Bodywork around the front wheels (Art.3.11)
Conformity of the 'flat bottom' (Art.3.12)
Thickness of the skid block (Art.3.13)
Skid block fasteners (Art.3.13)
Front bodywork overhang (Art.3.14)
Rear bodywork overhang (Art.3.14)
Flexibility of bodywork (Art.3.15)
Upper bodywork dimensions (Art.3.16)
A number of other checks are carried out at the same time as the weighing procedure and bodywork dimension check, amongst which are:

Driver's knee movement (Art.13.3)
Height of driver's head (Art 15.2.2)
Pedal positions (Art.15.4.2/3)

Post race checks:

After the race all classified cars are weighed and a number of checks, chosen from the above lists, are carried out on the first six cars finished the race. Additionally, after the race a number of random checks are also carried out.

Mclaren attempted to argue that the bumps and curbs caused the wear and therefore force majeure should apply (ergo these bumps and curbs apparently weren't on the circuit for anyone else...)

So yeah, they are pretty sour. Andrea Stella cancelled his interview for the night.

Quote

The Team argued that mitigating circumstances existed in that there was additional
and unexpected porpoising at this event, limited opportunity to test due to the weather
on Day 1, and shortened practice sessions. Further the Team submitted that the
degree of the breach was lower than prior breaches of this regulation in 2025.
The FIA argued that unfortunately there was no provision in the regulations or in
precedent for any penalty other than the usual penalty (i.e. disqualification).

The FIA
noted that it strongly held the view that the breach was unintentional and that there
was not deliberate attempt to circumvent the regulations.

It's a reasonable excuse. I don't think anyone has implied they were skirting the rules on purpose. They obviously started the race in compliance. It's F1: everyone is designing their cars right up to the limits; they just miscalculated the wear. But why why even put yourself in a position where it might be close at the end? Every other team seemingly was able to figure it out, none of whom have nearly as much to lose as them.

Yeah I have no doubt it was unintended, but them's the rules. If the bumps don't work as an excuse at COTA, they aren't gonna work at a much smoother Vegas circuit. And yeah, they just pushed it a tiny bit too far, as you say.

Ferrari got the same harsh penalty in a race last year.  Both cars DQ'd.

Yeah 2023 at COTA for too much skid block wear, and in China this year, one was underweight and the other had another skid block violation.

McLaren having Norris start lifting and coating the last 3 or 4 laps pretty much guaranteed they were going to get checked you would think.

There was an article on the F1 reddit about the FIA finding a skirting of the rules by teams in Brazel related to the skid block being made of a material that compresses when heated to avoid skid wear and be able to run lower. Probably not a coincidence that right after the FIA catches this McLaren has both cars DQ'd for skid wear.

Happened to Schumacher about 30 years, or so, ago.

Yeah that was some pretty ingenious stuff. These F1 engineers ....

I'm kinda thinking that may have been a large part of McLaren's advantage this season, just running lower than everyone else.

Newey finally got the chance he wanted,  will be interested to see if this becomes a careful what you ask for situation, especially when you consider who is their second driver.

Qatar is a motogp track and it shows. Way too many high speed turns for cars to be able to follow close. Plus you have the ridiculous tire rules. But Liberty’s gotta get that Middle East money.

Boring Sprint race

how are they so bad at picking tracks for sprints? outside of ALO dropping down, how many passes happened after lap 1?

Lewis and Charles need to sit down with Ferrari and work some shit out. Both drivers have gone backwards over the last months.

#2232

well its not the engine since haas is doing alright. maybe them italian engineers cant build the rest of the car worth a shit

#2233

Max starting on the inside lane behind both McLarens in what looks to be a slower car with nothing to lose into Turn 1.

I'm sure it will be uneventful.

They stopped developing this year's car in April, per Vasseur.

No shit? I didn’t know that was actually true. That would explain a whole lot.

Mercedes was terrible at the start of the new regs, but they stuck to it and came up with a pretty decent car by the end of the cycle.  Ferrari seems to have taken the back marker route and gave up when they realized they couldn't beat Red Bull.

My son received the Lego F1 Senna car last year complete with the unofficial Marlboro decals last Christmas. This year he has asked for the Williams Nigel Mansell car with the period correct decal kit.

They should have at least split them, but then they would have opened a whole other can of worms with which one to pick.

So I know nothing about F1, I’m fully a Netflix fan. But it seems to me that it kinda sucks that many races are mostly about pitting strategy vs actual racing / passing. Also, there’s something about the F1 cars not looking like “real” cars that makes it kind of overly clinical.

By comparison, I’d watch this every week if it was always like this:

Carry on.

#2248

This race is such a joke. 11 car DRS train behind Alonso going slow as fuck but no one can do anything about it.

Fuck Liberty and FOM for taking this money grab.

#2250

They just do it here because no one can pass because like someone said yesterday, it was designed for motorcycle racing.
