Long story short, we have to move back to Texas for 4-6 months this year for work and family reasons. Likely just rent a fully furnished house.

I grew up in the ex-burbs of Houston and have a house in Austin. I haven't lived in Houston proper so vaguely know but don't really.

What neighborhood should we live?

Requirements:

  • Near-ish airport
  • Large house not condo, town-house, or apartment
  • Near restaurants (love eating out)
  • Closer to west side ideally
  • Wife doesn't drive so ability to uber places is key

We don't have kids but will likely be traveling to Austin monthly so why I prefer west side. Price is very flexible.

  • Airports are N/NE (IAH) and S (HOU) so you're going to be driving 45-90 minutes (on a good day) to one no matter what if you want the west side.
  • A large house close in on the west side is going to cost you.   You're talking about the Memorial area.   Good luck finding a decent rental that's not pricey.
  • The farther west you go it gets cheaper then expensive again.  And more Aggies.
  • Houston is a shitty town to uber in unless you live near Rice Village, Midtown or Upper Kirby for the restaurants.
  • I would seriously consider broadening your house only rule to include condos or townhouses.   That opens up a lot of possibilities.
  • Good luck.  With the parameters you've laid out, the pickings might be slim.

I live on the far NE side (Kingwood) and work in the Woodlands (North).   The Woodlands sort of fits your bill other than being on the north rather than west side.  Kingwood is a good place to live but restuarants are lacking.

You could look at Fort Bend County (Sugar Land/Missouri City/Richmond/Rosenberg but you're also getting farther away from the airports.

I live by ninfas on navigation, love the neighborhood. it's quiet, long list of good restaurants. quick access to hobby

Seconded, on The Woodlands. There’s a ton of stuff to do near Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. You might even be able to walk a few places. Also close to IAH.

While it’s pretty great, it’s going to be $20 each way to Uber from Memorial. The Woodlands has a much better bike and hike set up.

The Heights, West U and parts of the Montrose are the only truly walkable neighborhoods.

If money isn’t a concern, I’d strongly recommend a place with a pool. It makes the summer much more enjoyable.

Money isn't a concern...

Sadly, we just hired an exec that lives in Katy so want to stay close to west side as I will likely be meeting with that new hire weekly.

If it’s only a once a week type meeting, I would pick the neighborhood you want to live in and just suck up the drive once a week. Living out towards Katy will suck the soul out of your existence. If you truly want near restaurants and easy to Uber, The Heights and Montrose should be your focus. Wife and I had a walkable neighborhood near restaurants and things to do at top of our list when we moved to Houston and those are the two neighborhoods we narrowed it down to before choosing Montrose.

Again, Memorial is great, but it’s not walkable. You’ll be lucky to have 1 or 2 walkable restaurants nearby. And there are only 2 dedicated neighborhood bars, Cowboy Surfer and By Popular Demand.

I’ll probably get negged to infinity, but I think The Heights is too busy now. I have an acquaintance that lives next door to Cedar Creek and I have no idea how he sleeps. 19th and 20th are basically a less good version of Rainey Street.

They dropped a large shopping centers on 11th, 6th, and 34th. I liked the neighborhood better when there were a few bars on White Oak, and you could eat a quiet dinner at Lola and you needed to sign a club membership at Eight Row Flint.

Yeah, if you live next door to a bar you’re likely going to have late night bar noises. There’s an easy fix and that’s to not live next to a bar or busy streets like 11th.

45 north and south

maybe some off hempstead

so i've heard

Agree w/ 3 putt on Spring Branch.

Not sure what a short term, fully furnished rental looks like, but it checks tons of boxes other than being near the airport.

Curious why you're against a townhouse/condo, if only here for 6 mo?

Why do you need a large house for just a couple? Are you hosting orgies on the weekend?

Nice. Feels like that part of town has gotten hot lately with a ton of new restaurants and stuff going in.

I'm glad Bobby Heugal and his partner Peter kept it the same after they acquired it.  Same as they did with Catbirds.

Don’t like the sound of that at all.

In a good way. Along with the patio not all rotted out, and it doesn't smell like sewage anymore. However they do have loud DJs at times which is not for me these days.

Pretty much sums up my feelings about it. The patio is comfortable now and is a good spot when the DJs are too loud.
