I'll let you know if I can make it out Friday night.

So, not a snake, but since most people will think it is a snake, I am putting it here.  This is the first Glass Lizard I have caught.

I thought I was going to find a bunch of cool snakes today.  Only saw two ribbon snakes.  However, one was being eaten by a hawk, so that is pretty cool.  Not the best or sharpest shots, but still coo

Saw this little guy hauling ass by the sidewalk on International Blvd in Orlando. As close as I could get before he took off. I think it’s a Southern Black Racer.

I had higher hopes for today but the on and off rain didn’t seem to help. Ran into a guy I see herping sometimes and he said he saw a 3 ft alligator on Snek Rd this morning. In the range of alligators but just don’t see them that much in Katy.

saw this healthy adult cottonmouth.  He wasn’t pleased with me. spacer.png

then I saw this big ol ratsnake. 5’ easy.

Great pics, as usual Patricio. Always look forward to your updates on this thread.

But got damn, was scrolling thru pics quickly, and, for a split second, I thought you had picked up that moccasin for a close up. I was thinking, man,  this Patricio guy really does have bigger balls than brain!

Juvenile racer, pattern and forked tongue is an awesome shot. Well done Sir.

Hahaha. Nah, no reason to pick one those up. The only venomous snake (besides the non human threatening ones like Hognoses) I pick up would be a coral while wearing leather gloves. But even then, I usually don’t.

Haven’t had a rat snake in a bit. This guy stopped by to bless the move.

He saw that sign saying 'pack rat', figured you had a shipping container full of tasty rodents, and stopped by for a feast. Or so thought snek.

Do you still have the video of the one we snagged. The one that actually came towards us in the grass? I’ve got it, I just don’t know how to post it. I’ll send it to you and you can post it.
*(Pardon the expletives, I was kind of excited)

Yeah, it’s not letting me post it either. There are two of them. First one is grabbing him with the snake tongs, and the second is when we set him down on the road.

This guy tried to break into my house last night.  I heard a clomp or glonk or something on the back deck, so I turned the light on and saw this fellow.  I think he was climbing the wall and fell down.

Pretty sure it's just a friendly rat snek, right?

But man, I go out there barefoot sometimes to look at the stars.

What do I have here. They appear to be mating but I have no idea if this is how it's done. This is a stream that starts about 50 yards to the right with a gushing spring. The water is COLD. The larger one is about 4' and the smaller is 2' or so. When I first saw them they were actually laying across the bullfrog's back. They moved before I could get my phone out

I am looking at the Kansas Herpetofaunal Atlas and think it most looks like the pictures of a Plain-bellied watersnake (Nerodia erythrogaster). KSU says we have several varieties up here.

Do ya think they were fucking?

Went out to Katy Prairie last night sans Patricio, and stumbled across this (almost 4ft) mud snek, and this prairie king.

I hate you. Heading there tonight. I did see a 3 ft Alligator out there. It’s their range, but I doubt there has been a decent population in 40 years. For y’all folks in Bridgeland...watch for gators.

I never fucked a snake. You?

Feisty. When males catch the pheromone scent of a female, they will swarm over her, forming a "mating ball." Within the snake mass, each male will try his best to get the female to open her cloaca (waste and reproductive orifice) so that he can insert his hemipenes and mate with her. And it is called a hemipenes because there are two of them and they are always erect. BTW, just like you don't need to fuck women to know how to mate with them, you don't need to fuck snakes to know how they mate. It is in books.

Hey Homesick, next time I see you don't be surprised if you get shanked.  Used up all the luck last night.  Only saw this cottonmouth tonight.  While it was thicc, I prefer a thicc ass.

Someone please post that picture of the six guys of African American decent standing over the blonde girl sitting innocently on the couch.
I feel like that’s what Bevo is trying to explain in layman’s terms, how snakes mate to those who haven’t read the books.

Yeah dude, saw four of them the other night when I had the crew of kids in the car. Not particularly what I was looking for, but I got (the two that weren’t already run over) out of the road.
Here’s one that I was able to grab and throw into the grass. I don’t want to show pics of the ones that were run over. I’ve got a video of the other one that I moved into the tall stuff.

That said, the prairie king is still with me. That dude is as cool as a cucumber. He’s gonna be a tough one to turn loose. I marked where I found him though.

Did you hear a metallic squink?  Someone yelling out “DEAR GOD!”?

Ok, so I’m no snake charmer like you two but I consider myself fairly knowledgeable and know more about snakes than most people. I have never seen or heard of a mud snake.   Incredible red color. Thanks for posting.

I know seasoned herpers that have spent years looking for them and never find them. Goddamn Ol Miss goes out there while my wife is at the gym and I am stuck at home with the kids and almost runs one over. Figures. Still hate him.

I was out there today and saw a dead Prairie King and a dead crawfish snake.

Has anyone on here been bit by a copperhead? Supposedly it isn't usually that bad as long as you aren't allergic.

Had a buddy in Caddo Mills get bitten on a finger by a small one a few years ago. From what I remember it wasn't a small deal.

Similar here. An acquaintance through a friend got bit in a leg. Took 3 or 4 rounds of antivenin, and IIRC it wasn’t cheap. Like $20k or $25k or some shit per dose. Can’t remember all the details now, but for some reason I don’t think their insurance covered the antivenin. This was close to 15 years ago, and wasn’t overly interesting at the time. Needless to say, I could be off on it. Either way, it wasn’t much fun for the poor bastard. Think one fang hit an artery or something like that.

If you can treated quickly you’ll live. It’s going to suck for a while for sure, but unless you’re out with the keystone cops you’ll live.

Swayze can you point me to an idiot's guide on id'ing venomous Texas snakes?  Love this thread and your pics and don't want to kill anything I come across around the house (we're on a greenbelt and it's pretty snaky) that's harmless.  Aren't there only a few you have to worry about?

Central Texas snake id on FB is great. Cottonmouths are the ones that are kinda difficult since they go through a lot of different patterns. The rest (rattle, copperhead, and coral) are fairly obvious. Leave them all alone or spray water on them to get them gone but you don’t need to resort to the shovel first thing.

Yeah, I don’t know if a guide, but I am sure they are out there. Like the Facebook one that was mentioned (I don’t Facebook).

Honestly, if you are living in a green belt, I don’t think you should be killing any snakes. Even venomous ones. Your house is in their ecosystem and they are an important part of it. You likely have less mice and rats because of them. I understand you may have pets or kids you are worried about, but you can always find someone to remove the animal for free.
