Awesome ratsnake SurlyBDR. Well, it was a very active day out in the Katy Prairie.  I figured it would be a good day to go with all the rain that we had, but wasn't expecting all the flooding.  I

I thought I was going to find a bunch of cool snakes today.  Only saw two ribbon snakes.  However, one was being eaten by a hawk, so that is pretty cool.  Not the best or sharpest shots, but still coo

Think about how many adult females they haven’t caught and are still out there. Each probably laying similar numbers.

100 less, at least.

That is probably not going to be very effective.  It not like they hang out together at the snek bar.  They don't purposefully meet up until mating season.

That closed on SoCo a while back, didn't it?

University of FL is doing a python removal project where they tag males, which then lead them to females during mating season.

And, this is going mega-scale since last fall it was discovered that they just needed to tag possums, coons, etc and then track the pythons that eat them

I understand what they're doing, but it still doesn't appear to be very effective.

Probs best just to nuke Florida. For this reason, but for other reasons as well.

Just so y'all know, I don't like killing snakes, and I won't unless I think there's a need to.  Saturday night, I encountered this snake in an urban area.  The only non firearm weapon I had in my car was an umbrella.  I broke my umbrella killing it.

IMG-0772.jpg

So because I felt bad about killing it, I figured I needed to skin it and eventually eat it.  For those of you that don't know, a reptile retains muscle memory long after it's dead.

Notice it's "head" up in this pic.

When I picked it up out of the bowl, it struck me in the arm.  It scared the shit out of me.

Markings make me think Prairie Kingsnake, but color is kind of strange. So I’m going with Kitchen Remodel Snek.

Two hours before the game on Sat, wife texts me that there is a huge rattlesnake in the back yard and the dogs are going crazy.

I replied "Bring the dogs in. By the time I get on tomorrow, the snake will be gone."

Sure enough, Sunday evening, no snake.

(probably a black tail, very common where I am. I see on on the road all the time this time of year.)

What is it?

Grey rat snek. Sometimes the babies can be extremely light in color.

Where are you?  If the Woodlands, could be a juvenile coachwhip. Maybe a buttermilk racer.

Wait, sneks come in different flavors?

That was at Lake Buchanan.

Assuming in Texas - young Western ratsnake.  Skull on the back of the head.  I don't think gray ratsnakes come this far west.

Eastern Hognose

Here's one for you guys - not in Texas.  Tell me what it is and I'll tell you where I saw it.  He was friendly.

Plains garter or lined snake. Pattern a little different than the garters in TX.

That guy was in Maine, in Acadia National Park by Jordan Pond.  I was just thinking to myself, "It doesn't seem very snaky here" and then my wife almost stepped on him.

Dammit! I should have posted. I saw that you commented in the hurricane thread about Lee and figured that's where you were. I have done a lot of hiking in Maine and have yet to see a snake.

In 6th grade, I was pulled out of 1st period language arts class by the vice principal.  The librarian had heard noises coming from my locker.

Before school, I had stopped by the cool science teacher's class to visit his two hognose snakes - he wasn't there and the door was locked.  Knowing it would be a bad idea to take the bag to class, I put the bag in my locker.  The bag held 5-6 gulf coast toads I had brought for the snakes.

Later in the year, that cool science teacher and I traded reptiles - my Texas alligator lizard in exchange for a six foot coachwhip.

Not real sure. Was thinking water snek or juvi moc. I’m not seeing pits, but pics aren’t great either. Baby hog isn’t a bad guess though.

Edit: snek’s in FL, specifically panhandle.
