Flipped a board just outside of Austin and found 2 Coachwhips and one Western Diamondback.  The buzz worm tagged one of the coachwhips and he took of.  I can't find anything definitive on whether thei

Awesome ratsnake SurlyBDR. Well, it was a very active day out in the Katy Prairie.  I figured it would be a good day to go with all the rain that we had, but wasn't expecting all the flooding.  I

I thought I was going to find a bunch of cool snakes today.  Only saw two ribbon snakes.  However, one was being eaten by a hawk, so that is pretty cool.  Not the best or sharpest shots, but still coo

Not real sure. Was thinking water snek or juvi moc. I’m not seeing pits, but pics aren’t great either. Baby hog isn’t a bad guess though.

Edit: snek’s in FL, specifically panhandle.

This, but I think that's a moc because of the markings and the shape of its head.

Are the pupils round or slotted?

Not sure. My mom took and sent the pics.

Pops picked it up (obviously), and took it to a wildlife reserve not far from there.

That is definitely a Northern Florida or Eastern Cottonmouth.  I would not trust those gloves with venomous snakes.

Me neither. Although it somehow made sense to him in his alzheimer state.

And drove with it the 2 miles or so over to the national forrest refuge or whatever it’s called.

Did he let it sit in the front seat?

No. Apparently held the head in one hand, drove with the other, without a care in the world.

But you tell him he can’t be doing shit like that and you get a blank stare, like he doesn’t understand.

Alzheimers is a terrible disease.

With a seat belt on I would assume.

Prairie rattler in NW KS while my dad was planting some wheat at the edge of the pasture.

This one lived as it was well away from the house. I've seen a couple of rattlers out there but always in the crp or pasture well away from the house/out buildings.

Only thing I have seen near the house/buildings are bull snakes.

Obviously the tribe has spoken on this snek, but I’d like Surly to confirm what I think it is/was.

Well, that’s a bummer. I’ve seen lots of banded water snakes around our pond but had never seen a snek like this.  Thought it might be a cottonmouth so I made the decision to remove it before it slithered off.

Diamondback water snake.

If you can see the eyes from the top of the head, its not a cottonmouth.  Cottonmouths have a hooded eye.  Here's a picture from the side, but you can see how the eye is shielded from the top.

Also of note in this picture - the cottonmouth has round pupils.  Their eyes dilate with light, thus making the pupil shape a inconsistent indicator of venomous snakes.

Black Mamba.....you're probably already dead

After that rain I figured I would hit snek road. Saw 4 species, but the ribbon got away before I could get shots. One of the larger ribbons I have seen. Maybe 3 feet. Saw two cotton mouths, one was dead.

Definitely a gopher. Where are you?

Buddy sent it to me. Southwestern utah.

Think I stepped on a coral today in nw hills. May have been a king but my dog chased it off before I could see pattern.

There are no kingsnakes (or milkshakes) that look like corals in Austin.

No. Ratsnake. Many snakes rattle their tails to try and deter being fucked with.

So is it a coppermouth or a cottonhead??

The Horns had a bye today so we headed to Black Bayou near Monroe, Louisiana. Saw one gator and this Rough Green Snek and Western Ribbon Snek.
