Awesome ratsnake SurlyBDR. Well, it was a very active day out in the Katy Prairie.  I figured it would be a good day to go with all the rain that we had, but wasn't expecting all the flooding.  I

I thought I was going to find a bunch of cool snakes today.  Only saw two ribbon snakes.  However, one was being eaten by a hawk, so that is pretty cool.  Not the best or sharpest shots, but still coo

1st snek of the year. It's about 6" long, give or take. DeKuy's Brown Snake is our guess. They are very common around here.

What say you, Surly?IMG_3428.thumb.jpg.97c01176f72d65b14499629ec81c04cf.jpg

Can't see the markings in the photo.  Either a Dekay's Brown or a Rough Earth Brown.  If there are noticeable markings, including a slightly darker top of the head, it's a DeKay's.

Common Brown Snake (Pseudonaja textilis)

Good to start the year off with an easy id of a snake, a bit out of their traditional range though.

I guess there is a slightly less than zero chance that it is a venomous snake from Australia.

What color are its eyes? You'll have to get close.

They are dark brown. If you have read the whole thread, you know I don’t mind getting close.

Look at the third scale on the ventral side of its body. If it bites you and you die before you can get help, its probably an African Death Adder. If you don't die, its probably what we call a "cute little brown snake"

See you guys next week in the "horrible ways to die" thread."

Come on, the article said it's non-venomous.

To make sure that you have a memorable encounter with these magnificent sneks, for only about $10K you can get a spot on a scuba diving trip to swim with them and get a nice close up view.

Yeah. Any Jaws reference I see is an auto + rep from me.

What kind of snake is this? My son saw it near our neighborhood pond.  Is it a cottonmouth?

think that's a nerodia, water snake, specifically a diamondback variant.  They can look an awful like cottonmouths, especially mature ones with the very dark, mottled coloring.  They also flatten their heads to look like pit vipers.  And they're often found around water.

One of the key identifiers when you can see the head is some pretty easily visible vertical stripes along the jaw on a light background, usually yellowish.

@TwiceHorn is correct - its a harmless diamondback water snake.  They have a chain link kind of pattern.   Plain bellied water snakes look line they have chalk marks across their backs.   At least that's how I tell the two apart.

Seems like about half the snakes we identify are water snakes.  They come in a lot of varieties.

This is one of the sort of dark mottled variants. He was pretty aggro. Or she.

Also, ha, this is my own pic of my own encounter and, look closely, you see that same pattern.
