Legend. Enjoy the two hour watch, or not. Time's catching up.

holy fuck, this guy is 73 and he looks like he's 100.  Ringo looks like a teenager next to this asshole.

The years have been as loose as his toms

I'm 10 minutes into this ego project of his kid's, and I'm waiting for Phil to talk about how he had an onion on his belt, which was the fashion of the day.

Jeez, what's with all the shit talk about Phil?  He's a legit legend on the kit.

Watch the doc and listen to all the drummers rave about him.

They just don't want that goblin coming after them.

Have you ever watched something and then wished that you hadn't.

Everybody gets old and everyone dies, but it's sad and depressing to see people that shaped my world get to the end of the road.   I caught a 10 minutes segment of this where they set up his old kit and he got behind it for the first time in years. He was so frail that he could only pick up one stick and lightly tap a few drums.  He'e only 73. On one hand he shouldn't look that old, on the other hand, that's what a lot of 73 year olds look like.

Yes, and I watched it in person.

Same it’s kind of sad. I don’t know much about him as a person although apparently he’s got a reputation. But 80s Phil Collins was the soundtrack of my youth.

It turns out he's a huge collector of Alamo artifacts, and he's donated quite a bit of it to the state.

You guys have me curious.  What's with all the Phil Collins hate.  Did I miss something or is my sarcasm meter off?

Phil has a bad reputation? always thought it was Joan Jett.

Only thing I remember was he did that song about homelessness, and then a bunch of homeless people parked in the yard of his mansion and he had to evict them. Which was a bad look, but what ya gonna do?

And he made Genesis from an arty band into something more popular. But again, is that bad?

And then he had a great solo career with the kind of hit parade most artists could only dream of.

Smells like jealousy more than anything. Dunno any other reasons, I've never been THAT interested.

There was that one time where someone was drowning and he wouldn't lend a had. That's a pretty dick move.

From HF's.  Someone had a story about taking a chic to a show and she went home with Tommy Shaw.  (Or something like that)

I was wondering if Phil "Shaw'd," Gil's date or something.

He is an honorary Texan.  Had a huge collection of Alamo stuff and donated it to the state.

Cut him some slack!

I'm actually not even a little bit surprised to see Surly talk shit on Phil Collins.

Well.

Just the one guy.

He believed he fought in the Battle of the Alamo for the good guys and was reincarnated according to a Texas Monthly article years ago.

He also replaced Peter Gabriel as a lead singer and could play the drums like a beast simultaneously and pull all kinds of hot ass in his prime.

But he was no Gil Bang, mind you

I mean, the same guy invalidated all future opinions when he shat on Pet Sounds years ago. I thought everyone was on the same page that he is a know-nothing shit take factory.

Well, I don't particularly like The Beach Boys or Pet Sounds, but that aside, Phil Collins is far from a know-nothing.  To each his own, I suppose.

That tracks. It's no Boston, that's for sure.

Definitely.

In my defense, I do recognize that Brian Wilson was in pretty rarified air.  It just isn't for me.

I am a Phil Collins fan. I was just remembering that the guy shit talking Collins has a history of dumb music takes.

Sorry, I misunderstood who you were referring to.

Yeah, like the guys that used to be in Genesis with him

Edited by Dennis Taylor

Meh, he's no Tito Puente.

Phil is great. He’s more Ringo than Peart, but that’s ok.

That dude put out some damn good music and some of the best musicians in the world waited for his call.

Missed this back in December.  Yeah, it's bad (just imo).  But that's ok.  Peter Gabriel's solo career was really what a continued arty Genesis would have been.

But even Gabriel went much more mainstream in the mid-80s with “So”.

I think "ABACAB" is one of the great pop-rock albums of that era.  It sounds fucking fantastic, and I give Phil Collins most of that credit.

Both Genesis and Peter Gabriel did waaay better separate than they did together. Mike Rutherford was the only one that was equivalent in and out of the band.

That's cool.  Yeah, I mean, it's nothing against Phil Collins, really.  PG left, Collins stepped up, and they became something different.  I just didn't like the band's output much after they had become much more conventional/radio/video friendly.  And by the time they had gotten to "Invisible Touch", they had lost me.

That's more or less when they found me. "The Brazilian" remains one of my favorite instrumentals.

Yeah, everything that was "progressive rock" from the 70s did.  Genesis became what they became, Yes had "Owner of a Lonely Heart", etc...   But, to me, while PG obviously embraced mainstream songwriting to have charting singles like Solsbury Hill and Sledgehammer (great songs), he also had a whole lot of less mainstream stuff on those albums, too.  Intruder, Biko, Rhythm of the Heat, San Jacinto, etc... were really creative, interesting and different from so much of what was being pushed on radio and MTV.  I think he did a great job straddling the fence.

Yeah, they certainly found a lot more people in the 80s than they did the 70s.

to be fair, my age didn't hit double digits until the 80s; prog rock was not exactly on my radar then

I'll preface this by emphasizing I'm someone who listens to Gentle Giant, Wishbone Ash and the like, the problem with early Genesis and Peter Gabriel is the shit was just half baked. They got a lot better at what they did later. It wasn't really commercial vs non commercial.
