I’m curious to see what 3rd and long looks like especially against the Texas edge rushers. Hopefully Simmons’ speed and length destroys their tackle guards and disrupts many run and pass plays. Leavitt also has to be accounted for since he is slippery and can make plays with his feet. The interior and edges need to contain and collapse the pocket. No doubt our DL can overmatch their OL, but undisciplined play will result in Leavitt breaking free for gains. Assignment sound football will take care of both Leavitt and Skattebo -- game over.
December 29, 2024Dec 29 Clemson was a great warmup for ASU. Clemson kept it "close" because Klubnik played lights out. Even then, the game was never really in doubt. Clemson is much better than ASU. Only way ASU keeps it close is if Quinn throws 3 picks and Sark goes deeper in his let's try to be genius and drastically go away with what's working. We pull away in the 2nd half cause their lines are tired of getting fucked up the ass with no lube.

December 29, 2024Dec 29 Author Popular Post PFF released their Peach Bowl preview. Major points: Almost a quarter of ASU’s passes are screens. Ant Hill has 92.5 coverage grade against screens. His 13 tackles against screen passes are the most by any LB in the country. ASU’s OL will have pulling in both directions on some plays. Ed note: I’ve seen some of the stuff we see from Sark from Dillingham also. Texas creates early contact, 1.6 yds avg but misses too many initial tackles. ASU DL is #100 in run defense grade. Utah is the only team they’ve seen that runs a lot of OZ and they averaged over 5 YPC. Texas has the best pass blocking grade in the country. ASU has the 3rd worst pass rushing grade, plus they rarely blitz. Ewers is #86 in passing grade from a clean pocket, much worse under pressure. ed note: This is why Texas needs explosive plays or a strong running game. ASU has 16 INTs this year. Texas is the top secondary in stopping downfield throws. Texas may have best overall line play in FBS. The lines for ASU are the weakest part of their O and D.
December 29, 2024Dec 29 Popular Post Small up front, but this season is the result of a cohesive offensive line, a fun back with an excellent name, a young QB playing well and a head coach that is quickly ascending to being one of the elite coaches in the college game at age 34. None of that means a whole lot as the season ends on January 1st. Considering this was supposed to be a year of being a bottom feeder I think this has been more than a sufficiently excellent season. Perhaps some of the longer tenured ASU folks can speak more to that since football mostly has done a whole lot of nothing for a long time. Where ASU has an advantage over every program in the Big XII is location combined with hopefully a willingness to spend going forward. The next thing Coach Dillingham should do is get in some bigger guys upfront. Go put a sign up in American Samoa advertising free cars or whatever for recruits. Just get some big fellas up front on defense. I trust him to make some really good decisions.

Maybe even just make him the school’s minister of culture and have him show the new recruits how to get even more women with all that NIL money. Perhaps he could even get the basketball team a few Big XII caliber basketball players and a real basketball coach.

Clemson has a much better offensive line and defensive line than ASU size and speed wise, so I imagine any mismatch we saw there will be more pronounced here. Very pronounced, but it’s cool. UT wins easily and I can still pull for them to finish the deal. It will be fun to see the aggy implosion with the Horns winning it all in their first year in the big boy conference. Aggy will keep on doing humorous aggy things on and off the field that never results in anything outside of mediocrity.

Primarily, it was a complete lack of any attempt to disguise or vary the scheme that was the real issue. It made it very simple for Ewers and Sark to read, slice and dice.

Yet here they are in the CFP.

There is nothing to analyze, it would be like comparing the Grenada military to the United States prior to the invasion. ASU doesn't have a defense and will make Wisner and Blue look like Bijan and Rojo are in the back field. Their secondary is trash and will allow Ewers to find open receivers and feast. Not to mention their d-line will get blown off the line all night. They have Scatteboo and a freshman qb that has never met a hard pipe hitting defense like Texas before. Our d-line will storm through their offensive line. The Texas defensive front seven is going to blitzkrieg their offense all day. “They are terrible, we should win convincingly”? 12 hours ago, DFW Horn said: I was told there would be anus. the only other thing I can add to this thread is that I like ASU’s shade of maroon. Vastly superior to the seared plum bullshit that Aggies wear. I also like Dillingham and the whole vibe of ASU’s program this year. They came to party. Shame we’re going to bounce them, otherwise I would be pulling for them through the post season.

It doesn't worry me, but in the first half we will probably see a lot more passing than running yet I bet we will be averaging over 6 yards per run.
December 30, 2024Dec 30 Author I alluded to #0 Jordyn Tyson earlier. He was lost for the season against Arizona and it’s hard to overstate his importance to the ASU offense. Prior to his injury Tyson had 75 catches for 1101 yards and 10 TDs. This was over 40% of total receiving yards and 60% of production from the WR position. Troy Omire (3-19 this season) started the CCG in his place. The most productive receiver that will play in the Peach Bowl is speedy #1 Guillory: 19 catches, 320 yards and 5 TDS. On 3rd downs, I expect ASU to look for TE #7 Metayer: 29 catches, 290 yards, 5 TDs. The RBs role in the passing game is mostly around the LOS: screens, swing passes and check downs. Skataboo is 37-506-3. The backup is Lancaster’s Kyson Brown: 12-175-1. Tyson was the only receiver who could plausibly demand double coverage. I don’t think any of the rest can make Texas distort its scheme to account for them. He’s an enormous loss in both production and scheme.
December 31, 2024Dec 31 That loss was for sure a big one. Taking away the receiver that was the best from a young QB will probably lead to some predictable results against a team that’s far and away the best ASU will have seen this year. This will be a good learning experience I think in how to deal with adversity early and often against a supremely superior opponent in the Horns.

Yet here they are in the CFP. Oh for sure. It is one of the better coaching jobs anyone has done in a good long while considering the talent discrepancy. I paid scant attention back in August. I figured that maybe being in the Big XII would equal a bowl game if everything went really well. I like that this job is Dillingham’s dream job. He obviously is putting in not just work, but the positivity he exudes seems to translate really well to how his players respond to him. Sometimes coaches and schools just match at the right time. I think he could have a Gary Patterson type of career with some higher highs if he can build a better defense and bring in more talented players over the next 3-4 seasons.
December 31, 2024Dec 31 Lander Barton knocked the dog piss out of Sam Leavitt. He gave our linebackers the script for handling Leavitt.

December 31, 2024Dec 31 ASU is at a significant talent and size disadvantage. You don't need to dig very deep to figure that out. This is a rebuild. It's going to still be a rebuild next year. They just started winning long before anyone expected it, because Dillingham is a really good young coach and the Big 12 is kind of dogshit. The Big 12 can't out-talent ASU despite its massive losses from the Edwards implosion. This game will probably be a blowout, but... Sometimes irrational confidence goes a long ways.
