December 29, 2024Dec 29 From the “London Calling” album. If someone were to ask me, “Why was ‘The Clash’ referred to as ‘the only band that matters’, this is what I would point to. I don’t really know a lot about music. I just know- this song is great. It wasn’t a hit; I don’t care. I doubt it could have ever been played so much on the radio as to make me tire. It’s a shame that when you ask Alexa to play “The Clash”, you keep getting “Rock the Casbah” and “Should I Stay or Should I Go”. Instead, ask for “Hitsville in UK” or “Police On My Back”. (Or anything from their original self-titled album, which is the best example of punk played by people who know how to play their instruments). (Also- Elvis Costello’s “Beyond Belief” is sneaky great) Edited December 29, 2024Dec 29 by statsman
December 29, 2024Dec 29 I'm a fan of "Death or Glory", as well. "Now every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world Ends up making payments on a sofa or a girl Love and hate tattooed across the knuckles of his hands Hands that slap his kids around 'cause they don't understand how... Death or glory, becomes just another story..."
December 29, 2024Dec 29 I also think Sandinista was a bold attempt, and love that there's a song about Montgomery Clift on London Calling.

December 29, 2024Dec 29 The production on "Card Cheat" always had a bit of a Phil Spector-ish wall of sound vibe to me. That said, I'm an unabashed "Lost In The Supermarket" guy.
December 30, 2024Dec 30 I just like them because they rocked and were unique in a great way. I couldn't understand what the hell Joe was singing.
December 30, 2024Dec 30 So many great and diverse songs. I have a hard time naming a favorite, because it changes all the time, even after 40 years of listening to them. Bankrobber and Magnificent Seven are getting a lot of plays these days. Cheeseboiguh! Edited December 30, 2024Dec 30 by TwiceHorn

December 30, 2024Dec 30 Best record purchase I ever made was the Clash's first at Cactus Records. Not only is the album all killer no filler, it included their Gates Of The West/Groovy Times single stuck in under the shrink wrap.
