Mistakes may have been made. Thats always the case with tragedies. If you can do anything to help then thats the healthiest way of dealing with this imo.

Just my 2cent

without seeing updated reports from other camps, 18 camps were hit and one has the huge majority of missing kids / deaths.

Having literally driven that stretch of 39 last weekend to get my kids at HoH, I can’t even wrap my head around just how high that water was.
My gawd.

I’m sorry for the painful conversation you’ll have with your daughter. I just can’t imagine.

Yes, my daughter is pretty upset that her mystic term will likely be cancelled. But we have not talked yet about the next few weeks and friends that won’t return to school. Heartbreaking for so many.

I cannot either. When I was a camper for 8 years at Waldemar (I went first session so all of June) and we rarely had rain. So to see all this devastation and destruction is difficult to comprehend. I cannot fathom how the residents feel. I was just a summer camper and one time counselor. There for a couple of weeks and then gone. All of their stuff is gone.

this ain’t a joke cuz I see what the rebuilding efforts in North Carolina. They need to get some Amish in Kerrville once it’s safe to start the demolition process, I cannot wrap my head around this loss of life along with the utter decimation of both Hunt and Kerrville and other places we aren’t posting about much or focusing on. Damn.

so our bitch ass lakes better show some appreciation and get their asses full.

If anyone has any advice or resources about properly talking about this kind of stuff with children, I’m all ears. I don’t really have the most experience talking to my children about loss outside of great grandparents … which is weirdly easier because they have lived a full life.

But idk how I’m going to tell my girls that Jane has died and about the girls at camp mystic.

They literally just had the best experience of their little lives at camp and I’m going to burst that bubble a week later.

its minor compared to what other are going through. And I know we’re still in it right now / don’t have answers, But I’m trying to start to think about how I’m going to break this to my girls.

I’m sure it won’t make a difference but I hope this changes how people react to officials putting weather related precautions in place, especially in central Texas. Schools superintendents get bitched out every time they cancel school and it doesn’t turn out to be a massive weather event.

Aside from the financial hit, it seems like there would be too many painful memories associated with it.

OK, now I know this is an historic event.  My wife just started cranking SRV "Texas Flood".  I wasn't sure she even knew who he was.

Hold on . . . are you telling us your wife doesn’t know who Stevie Ray Vaughan was ?!?!?!?!

The news on this thread keeps getting worse.

Really should have made sure of that before proposing, but glad it worked out.

I'm heartbroken by this event, like many here not one of us 4 in my family doesn't know someone at most 2 Kevin Bacon steps from ourselves who is dealing with loss of human life.

So much I could post, including why this storm was so bad - we get lots of Mexican landfall tropical systems that come in early hurricane season and don't. I'll pick that up maybe in a few days if interest. Not definitive answers but good estimates.

Mainly I wanted to give a few words on today for ATX and immediate areas:

This storm's center is almost on top of us, moving very slowly ENE. It's been bubbling today, that is the early a.m. concentration was up in San Saba/Burnet areas, and now seems to have formed another "barbell end" S/SE of ATX east of San Antonio in the Lower Guadalupe/Blanco area. Watch there in particular the next few hours and take care.

However, there are some training storms N to S in W. Travis/Hays. Right now they're not too sated and are moving; however in some spots they're in a long line and could strengthen and douse a given area. It's next to impossible to know exactly where the "reds" will boil up and move. So stay near home or off roads where running water comes into play. Barry's remnants have  lost a little punch in the last few hours, but there's always the danger of a "bomb spot" especially as diurnal heating takes place today over the system. Fortunately they ground around us is cooler from the past days' rains and might help reduce the intensity.

This storm will slowly slide east of the 35 corridor by sunset or so, and being on the "backside" of it, will definitely decrease the totals. Tomorrow can see more rain but not what we've seen, even in Austin. By Monday this should be reduced to spotty light/medium showers widely scattered.

Any questions etc. I'll try to check in. My heart and prayers go out for the grief that you can just feel over this region today. Godspeed to loved ones dealing with this.

Obviously she knows who he was, she picked the song.  I was being facetious.  Her main listens are Clapton, Petty, Kelly Willis and younger artists like Kasey Chambers.  She's just not that much of a blues person.  (Or so I thought.)

Thanks. Didn't know about that site.

I cannot wrap my head around people driving over those bridges like it's nothing as water and trees slam into it. What on the other side of that bridge is worth risking your life?

I’ve always had a little bit of a crush on Kelly Willis. When my daughter was a freshman on the McCallum basketball team Kelly’s daughter was a senior. I was  on a booster club Zoom call with her and made a joke that got a laugh out of her. #csb

Yup, our kids all went to McCallum and I used to see Kelly and (for a while) Bruce at track meets, etc.  I probably spent too much time staring at Kelly and not enough time watching my kid run.  Priorities, it's not like he was bound for the Olympiics.

This was after my divorce, and if I hadn’t started dating my current wife at the time, I would’ve made a move on Kelly.

Who am I kidding. No I wouldn’t have.

Reading  about this from afar, and hearing some things from friends and family back in the Austin area.  Was out of the loop on it until this morning.  What a horrible tragedy in Kerrville and my sympathies to anyone affected.  And as areas continue to flood my best wishes to all of you to stay safe.

When we lived in SA, a tropical storm blew in and stalled over the city and dumped like 15 inches.  What I remember was that five inches fell in one hour and it was unlikely anything I'd ever seen.  Literally couldn't see across the street at one point.

That's what these hourly totals are like and it's mind bottling.

San Antonio drivers have never met a flooded street that they wouldn't try to drive across.

That’s my suspicion, or it will be open under new owners a decade from now.  I don’t know how you run a camp without putting some significant time post tragedy,

One of the Holts posted that their kids are safe… one was at Mystic.

But essentially HoH is completely decimated / destroyed.

Nueces River runs way west of San Antonio.  So far it’s sitting this flood out although it would be a good thing to get some to help fill Choke Canyon and Lake Corpus Christi

User name would need to be San Antonio River Rat of Cibolo Creek Rat.  Usually it’s the creek that brings the worse flooding to San Antonio.

Can you elaborate as to who these people are?  We have neighbors by that name down the street with kids ~ that age.

Lol wtf does Tom Henry have to do with any of this?

For folks in Austin's NW Hills, multiple low water crossings on old Spicewood Springs road are predictably closed.

A lot of streets in north central Austin are half-flooded. Shoal Creek is running like a motherfucker right now.
