July 5Jul 5 We dont have a time machine or any true influence with government leadership so its all moot anyway. Mistakes may have been made. Thats always the case with tragedies. If you can do anything to help then thats the healthiest way of dealing with this imo. Just my 2cent
July 5Jul 5 Popular Post Wait, people actually believe things will change, leadership-wise, because of this? lol yeah right

July 5Jul 5 Truly tragic events have unfolded and it's heartbreaking. People are sad, and mad, and that's to be expected. I'd like to ask everyone to please keep this thread clear of infighting and finger-pointing and especially keep it clear of cloak room stuff. There are plenty of other forums and threads to discuss all of that. Anyway, pouring rain again at my house, it's almost as dark as night, and every single drop here, will go straight into Lake Travis.

Read this: https://apple.news/A1LQmfIsOTVe7UjxAAIEdQA Yeah, it’s probably paywalled. So if you’re too poor to afford Apple News then I can’t help you Placing blame is a coping mechanism. Our brains don't like the idea of "terrible stuff happens and sometimes there's nothing you can do about it," so we rationalize it by finding fault. It's a subconscious way of adding a "we're in control" element to a situation (implied by placing blame for the lack of control). Others understand this and preemptively defend themselves against the blame they know is coming, which only makes matters worse. As always, there are degrees to it, none of which are universally applicable But calm, rational thought has gone the way of the dinosaur and wisdom/judgment left the building a long time ago.

July 5Jul 5 Popular Post Just learned my nephew was in the middle of all this - out safe. He's been working at His Hill Ranch Camp this summer. Cousin texted me some unreal pics of the destruction - mostly massive trees that were swept downriver and piled up, helicopters in the background, ect. God bless all involved. I'm just gutted thinking about those poor kids, and their families.

July 5Jul 5 It’s pouring here. Fucking pouring. in my view the local authorities messed up. If camp mystic had moved all of the girls to where they later evacuated (after the littles had been swept away) the 660 plus campers and counselors we wouldn’t be sitting here waiting for names. It’s beyond heartbreaking. Sorry for the rambling. Like everyone else I’m trying to cope. And comfort those in my own family whose best friends are waiting for word of their own daughters. And I know many of you are doing the same. fuck.
July 5Jul 5 Only thing I can wrap my brain around was a scouting event I took my son to years back. He got sick and we had to leave. As we were driving out a massive storm hit and washed away many of the tents/campsites and parents later told us they had to hide in their vehicles. We spent the day trying to reach dads and family members to make sure everyone was ok. But this. I just can’t.

While you can say 60% chance of rain or whatever, you can't predict exactly where that rain will fall. On a side note, aside from the 10 foot rise, forecasts are a potential 10-20 more feet in Travis. Nevermind that they all use the same sources for their radar maps, and we have been defunding weather radar systems and deactivating data sharing systems all over the place. Someone said up thread this is complete outlier, and I fear that these data points are going to be less and less the outlier as we lean harder into fucking the environment and climate
July 5Jul 5 Brother and his family were staying with some friends at their place on the water in Barton Creek Lakeside. Just talked to 'em and they're high and dry, but he said his buddy's dock and boat are nowhere to be seen this morning. Some close friends of ours are at their place on the other side of the river in Muleshoe Bend. House is high up on a cliff, so no danger there, but might be stuck for a bit. Also missing a dock. Welp. Yes way. Yeah I thought of that plaque as well. We camp at Ped Falls at least once per year. The past several it's been sad, barely any water. But I've seen it flooding like this before, too. Water moving so fast and heavy you can't even see the falls, it just looks like a small bump-down in the river level.

July 5Jul 5 Any updates on flows into Canyon Lake?? Also @Cajun since you live there, any news at Canyon Lake??
July 5Jul 5 Popular Post The thing about climate change, and this is no CR, but think of it like loaded dice, and you want to prepare for the worst case scenario being both worse than historical standards and more often. Whatever the worst case is: flash floods, hurricane winds, tidal surge, drought, heat death, lake effect snow, etc. To stick with the gambling metaphor: if in the past you’d roll a snake eyes occasionally and lost your original stake, now you roll it much more often, and your stake and house is on the line. And you don’t roll a 9 nearly as often to make money/have a good time. So for central Texas, you’ll have both more drought and, given how heat affects atmospheric dynamics, more catastrophic flooding.

July 5Jul 5 Lots of new developments on the San Gabriel river in Georgetown over the past decade. They are right on the river.

July 5Jul 5 It feels like Austin television outlets have gone way downhill. I can only find some hacks on KVUE reporting on this. Are there any official websites that are updating on rescues, etc.? All of these media resources and it's apparently amateur hour across the board.

July 5Jul 5 Popular Post As soon as I opened my eyes I came to this thread. I’ve been crying all morning reading this. As a girl dad i promptly went into my daughters room and laid down with her. Hugged her and like a good teenage kid she pushed me away and moody. A blessing I take for granted. I’m so deeply and painfully sorry to those hurting right now
