My wife and I just got home from a long walk with our dog and, of course, this tragedy was our main topic of conversation. One of the things we talked about was human nature’s desire to immediately assign blame in times of tragedy. We see it here on this thread. I’ve been really emotional about this event for a variety of reasons and I’ve been trying very hard to not immediately jump into the blame game. My thought is that there will be plenty of time for investigations, post mortems and so forth later. Right now, I’m trying to keep my mind on the victims and their families. All of that said, I just hope that something good comes from this. I hope it’s not another Uvalde where children’s lives are lost in vain.

The reality is NOTHING is going to move the needle. It doesn't matter how many children are lost. That is not CR, that is reality. Period.

Bad shit happens. This is obviously at the extreme end of bad on the shit scale. Unfortunately, the geology and location exacerbates flooding issues in this particular area.

You spewing off CR acting like this is somehow anyone’s fault is bullshit though.

Have you heard any projections on where they expect it to top out?

Heard from a colleague that authorities have recovered 13 bodies of missing Mystic campers. If true, not sure why that isn't out there with names held back but maybe that will come out in the next PC, which I think is scheduled for 2.

Still hoping and praying for miracle for Lulu.

Keep the hope up, I am with someone on one the mom group texts and I just heard they may have found 2 more girls alive.

Hearing firsthand from a friend last night who had boys in the rafters of their cabin at La Junta did it for me. I told her to tell the boys that they’re heroes in my book for being brave and watching out for each other.

Are there any formal reports that the damn near mystic broke?

Nothing formal but several have mentioned it. On one hand Mystic had the biggest loss of life so there are questions. But it’s also the first camp on the river and immediately past the dam so if it did break it would have had the biggest impact.

Really trying to avoid wading into the blame game but a dam breaking changes the scenario some, at least in my mind.

Here is how close cabins were to dam:

Which dam are we referring to?  Is this a legit Army COE maintained dam or some sort of earthern dam?  Anyone that knows the area that can pinpoint it on a map would be greatly appreciated by non-locals.

It’s chicken shit.

Their economy does have some dependence on campers and visitors. In my view, they failed them both. Camp Mystic in my view failed as they should have moved everyone to Cypress early that night hours before they actually had to evacuate all the Campers to Cypress. I think those evacuations happened after the littles had been swept away. And the camp should have known based on the cabins proximity to the river and the weather forecast and the fact the littles were closest to it that they needed to have been moved.

The locals have floods all the time they say, it floods. Sure. But they were also warned and while the forecasts didn’t say the exact amount of rain it was forecasted enough that precautions should have been taken fucking period.

We see that same kind of behavior of folks in hurricanes “the I ain’t leaving folks.” Unfortunately it takes a mass tragedy for them to realize that they should have warned everyone out of an abundance of caution. Those 8 year olds couldn’t protect themselves. In many ways imo the adults failed and they cannot pass it on the NWS. There is an equal mix of “it floods here all the time and they should have warned us it would have been biblical” to a total shirking of their responsibilities before the disaster occurred. I will credit them with doing everything humanly possible after multiple lives were needlessly lost.

we are all upset and talking shit through. We have a right to get it out in an attempt to move forward and figure out how we won’t have a similar situation in the future, god bless anyone missing a loved one.

Along these lines, and nobody wants to say it, but the parents who send their kids to camps put their kids in situations where they are largely governed/watched over by college kids with minimal training. These camps - the ones I have had friends work at - do some training, but it's not like they are employing professionals here. I don't send my kids to these particular camps, but mine go to others with other risks. Makes me stop and think.

Oh fuck off. Your guys are already literally blaming this on evil Biden weather modification and shit. Whereas the sane people are noting that state authorities have an easy mechanism to send statewide alerts out: they use it whenever a cop gets a hangnail, even in the middle of the night. But for this? Nada from state authorities. This state is poorly run, and it’s getting exponentially worse by the day. The only thing holding shit together are some local governments - which are run mostly by regular Texans, your neighbors - and volunteer decent Texans.
There will be a shitload of failure analysis after this, but don’t worry your little head, nobody in the group that has run this state for the past 30+ years will take any responsibility. We’ll just hear the new official state motto: “It could have been worse.”
My fellow Texans are fucking dying, and not one of those fuckers cares about anything but themselves. Makes me want to puke.

That is the Cypress Lake camp, not the original Camp Mystic. 30 seconds on Google maps showed me that.

I would put the overall responsibility level of camp counselors up against that of the average parent in this country any day of the week.

I don't think that's the issue here.

Me too. Me too.

I'm a thousand miles away and was so disconnected yesterday that I never heard of any of this until just before bed. My sister's down there at an HEB Foundation camp but thankfully well off the river. She missed the family 4th because she couldn't get out of Kerrville, but that's nothing.

I've avoided this thread and board for the most part, but finally decided to check in because I realized the Surly community would probably be fairly well plugged in. I'm stunned by the extent, though.

Annabelle, whoever and wherever you are, you're a hero. Thank you and everyone else for what you're doing for all our loved ones.

This isn’t even the camp that flooded! The cabins in your photo are dry as a bone.

Just finished a bike ride here in Palos Verdes California.  One of the retired O6s that I ride with.  His daughter is a junior at TCU and this summer she was supposed to Intern and work at Camp Mystic instead chose to work out here.  She’s in shambles.

All sleepaway camps in Texas have to be licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Seems like a pretty common sense regulation to require camps with or near a body of water to submit safety and evacuation plans every year as part of maintaining their license. And it seems like everyone that works at the camp should be drilled on those scenarios.

A post from a friend…
This is a tragedy beyond tragedy's. Violent storms on the evening of 7/3 flooded the Guadalupe River which Camp Mystic rests on. The damn broke and all the younger girl cabins down on the "Flats" as they call it were basically submerged. From my daughter Tiny, "Water rose up to the door mom. The only way out was to break the back window and climb out. It was am and I couldn't find my shoes. I was so scared but I kept going. I had my retainers in but didn't want to lose them, so l put them in the pocket of my pajamas. We climbed through the window and headed up the hill.
The rocks really hurt my feet and I was so cold and shivering. We got to the top of the mountain and our counselor Annabelle was with us and was so awesome.
She kept us safe under a tree. We huddled shivering and singing songs in the dark. Mom I thought I was going to die I was so scared. The thunder and lightening was so loud. Once it got lighter out we made our way back down to the Cypress side of camp and then Annabelle through us over the river and we ran into the dining hall of Cypress where we sat in the dark.
They found me some dry clothes. We all just sat there waiting and waiting for hours. Then we were told we were getting on helicopters. Mom I didn't know if I would see you again."

JFC 😭😭😭😭😭

Well, for one, that’s not the camp that flooded. Two, your point was “look how close those cabins are to the dam” and the body of water in your picture is not the Guadalupe River. Three, the Cypress Lake camp did not flood. It’s where they evacuated everyone to because it remained safe.

Bettie live from Jonestown on CBS: “Just devastating up here. Four houses on this street lost their boat docks. One also lost their motorcycle. Just tragic all around. Back to the studio.”

Yes, but they're all over the place.  One of my neighbors who has been here over 4 decades says he's guessing 7 to 8 feet.  I think around 10', but I'm a newby and inject hopium straight into my veins.

Lake Travis is up 13' and all the flow from the Llano is still coming. Crazy.

I am going to do what LCRA wont do and predict we are over 661' when this is all said and done.

Our last residence in Texas was in the oak crest neighborhood of Georgetown, just south of the lake Georgetown dam and along the river as it exits.

Kind of glad to not be there at this moment.

struggling to understand where the disconnect between weather warnings and the camp(s) is.

I don’t know why, but the retainers line got me. The idea that a kid fleeing for her life would think about her responsibilities, probably worried that losing a couple hundred dollars worth of plastic would upset her parents. It’s just… holy shit.

I said it earlier in the thread that there is no excuse for having as bad cell service as they do where all these camps are located. I don’t know who it is that fixes that but it always made me super nervous when my kids were going.

I've had my ranch 20 years. ATT & Verizon are the only carriers that have service there.

All it takes is one lost tower to lose service.

I really appreciate the info on the horrific events that occurred at the camps, I just wish there was a dedicated thread so I could check it when I mustered the strength. It is too much to stomach when you have young kids and thinking what those poor souls went through. Had a teammate of my son almost lose his sister. She miraculously was grabbed out of the water downstream. The whole deal is just devastating.

Oh good.  Kristi Noem is about to speak.  She surely has new, detailed information to offer.

Just put the locals on and stop with this performative grandstanding by state and federal officials.
