Fans of middling teams will always have their narratives. I thought the refs were poor, but really didn’t impact the game significantly either way

Pretty much every big play of theirs sans the RB pass could’ve been nullified with flags. The fake punt, the TD in OT, the interception, the long RB wheel. They ran 100ish plays and were pressured 31 times, but didn’t hold once.

That was the most entertaining game I’ve watched in years.  Obviously I wanted the Big 12 squad to prevail, but I think they did enough to prove we should be included which is really all I cared about

Oh, sure, it could have been called. Refs have been very inconsistent on that call. But it would have been a bad a call.

And we're very fortunate they didn't make that call.

Which is great.

never mind carrying the running back into the end zone or the illegal man down field on the halfback pass AND the fake punt

They need to change it back from targeting to spearing.  This incidental helmet contact shit has been wildly inconsistent over the years and games.  You drop your head and drive it into the player as spearing always was, that is a flag.  The helmet is not meant to be a weapon.  In this case, it was not.  BUT, it gets called most of the time during the season.

I mentioned the OT TD and the fake punt. Don’t recall one on the RB pass, but wouldn’t be surprised. There was also one on the 2 point conversion that would’ve offset with the d holding.

ESPN "Get Up" this morning, national show, lead discussion is the uncalled Taafe targeting no-call and hos ASU wins the game is it gets called.  Not Greeny or any other one of the pinheads mentions the just as obvious targeting no-call the other way on the Ewers interception.  Sloppy, sloppy reporting.

Not sloppy, just an agenda....

Just saw that they gave Skat the Peach Bowl MVP.  First time ever the MVP has come from the losing team.  He had a great game, no doubt, but I'm pretty sure that an INT to clinch a playoff win, or 2 TD and one 2 point conversion passes in OT to win the game are more valuable.  It's a bitch move.  I'm getting where I fucking hate those chodes in Atlanta.

We had ample opportunity to make him irrelevant. He was the biggest impact player in the game although not enough to affect the final outcome

In a perfect world, on either side of the ball carrier, like tackling a dummy.

Again, had Taaffe hit him with his shoulder it would have changed absolutely nothing about whether targeting should be called. Leading with the shoulder to attack the head or neck area is also targeting. He didn't attack, so it wasn't targeting. It shouldn't be called. But bad calls absolutely happen, which seems like a stupid thing to obsess over.

They usually call that. I'm glad they didn't.

If some outraged fan among the Internet's inexhaustible supply of self-anointed rules experts would rewind the tape of yesterday's game (or any other) and provide us with a play-by-play analysis of tackles that meet SOMEONE'S definition of targeting, the results would be interesting. Apply the rule that liberally and there'd be no defensive starters on either team left to play the second half. Several RBs and WRs would be getting tossed as well. Maybe even assistant coaches flagged for butting heads with their own guys after good plays.

But back to the reality of CFB. The Taaffe play wasn't targeting, and anyone seriously claiming otherwise is building their fort on quicksand.

wildly inconsistent across games but remarkably consistent in this game. more proof sports journalists are dumber than the coaches ... the hit on bond and the hit by MT were almost identical. no call the one, no call on the other.  that's all you can ask for is consistency.

Yormark has always been the dullest tool in the shed. Emphasis on tool. He'll push for having Joey and Double Eagle on the oversight committee.

The problem with targeting is it is a stupid rule that needs to only be applied in the most extreme of circumstances when a player is being reckless. A player making a routine tackle like Taafe was doing shouldn't be tossed around as some great crime against humanity. How else is Taafe supposed to make that tackle? Tilt his own head backwards or to the right? And let's be honest, the media members crying about it wanted to see an upset. They are also the same people who say, "you can't let a penalty decide a game".

Exactly. These guys wear helmets for a reason. Sometimes, the helmets kiss. The ASUs player's helmet hit Taaffe's helmet too.

Watching the replay on ESPN right now -- Tessitore is such a fucking beating.

Weren’t there also illegal men downfield on the play near the Texas goal line where their QB ran around forever and eventually Texas was called for holding which gave ASU a first down at the 2 yard line.

On bang-bang collisions on a contested ball, they really want a clear indication of targeting.  Leading with the helmet is not an indicator.  That bullet point literally lists every body part and the key part of it is "attacking" not "leading."  They want a definitive thrust, not merely a collision.

Bad targeting calls are jading people's opinions of good no-calls.  Everyone wants every hard and high hit to be targeting.

This. There’s nothing in the rule that says this but in my heart of hearts I think the tipped pass was a contributing factor in their decision.
I felt as if Taffe is first going all out to intercept but realizes the guy is going to catch it. That’s why his head is up. Had it just been a pass he would have led with his shoulder.

I have no way to prove this but they likely didn’t want to gift ASU to set them up for the win, but they also likely felt as if Taffe was making a play.……..

…..But that gets called like 95% of the time in any other game during the year.

it wasn't targeting without the tip and the fact that this was part of the play makes the whole thing moot. argue till you're blue in the face if you want, but the refs got this play right. time to move on.

Obviously we need an expanded Targeting rule, which would encompass "Attempted Targeting" and "Negligent Targeting" as well as "Targeting with Intent to Distribute Disable". Then we're going to need an official with Uncivil or Sociopathic Behavior certification so the Review can start by determining intent. Absent intention, there would be no ejection. Perhaps a timed Penalty Box for perps, with or without offending team playing short-handed during such penalties.

We only have 10 officials, and with 22 players on the field, that may not be enough.

Easily. Smith, right now, could probably play in the NFL, and I'm not exaggerating. That dude is already built for that league. He's truly a specimen and on another level than anyone else, including Ryan Williams.

Most of the people shitting their britches about the Taaffe targeting call are dipshits who didn't watch the entire game or just need Texas to be the villain.

The officials working this game rat-fucked us at almost every turn. This game is over at the half if they call even half of the egregious/blatant offensive holding calls on ASU they should/could have. They had illegal men downfield, DPI and slew of bullshit that could either be categorized as "letting them play" or ratfucking Texas to keep the game close...

Weird play-calling and turtling kept it closer than it needed to be...

Calling this "the worst blown call in history" is senseless, a weak media ploy, and just another way to say "Please look over here. We need more viewers and ad dollars and the algorithm says controversy is the hottest ticket to more viewers and engagement."

If your analysis begins with "I hate fucking Texas and want to find a rationalization that says they should have lost" something tells me you'll find a way to dive in and "prove" Texas gets all the calls and never gets screwed by refs. Some biases can't be shaken... We all saw something way different. And we have two one-game seasons for a shot at CFB immortality. All bullshit aside, that's incredibly cool.

Exactly.  Perfect form tackle.

What was the deal with the play where they gave Skatebro an extra half yard or so so that he'd get the first down, reviewed it, and upheld the shitty call. Was that an optical illusion or something? Because he clearly did not get the ball to the marker.

That was insane.

Add that to the list. :))

Hills and Phillips said he had 5 yards of separation from the corner and it should have been a throw on a rope for an easy completion. Said he has to stop floating deep.

He cannot hit long throws.  He's great at short and intermediate.  We could beat their DBs every time.  Arch would have had 4-5 TD passes at least.

But then Sark let Quinn do his stuff the last two minutes and OT and he got 2 FG attempts and 2 TDs and a 2 point conversion, despite 4 false starts.

That's when I knew we were likely in for a long day.

Skattebo also pushed off of Taaffe on the long reception down the sideline.

The human head is something like 11-15% of an average person's height.  Tack on a bit more for the neck.  Then we put helmets on them that make them bigger.  Those helmets are going to come into contact with each other.   Then there is the whole "launch" aspect.  Every single tackle ever made involves some form of launching.  Coaches like to say "explode through the ball carrier".  If you think you are tackling another big ass human being by just running straight at them and not exploding/launching/whatever well you're gonna get SkibbidiSkatabooed". Then there is the whole thing where all the lineman and LBs who routinely are the most affected by CTE have nothing that protects them.   Targeting is a stupid fucking penalty and needs to get thrown in the waste bin.

The roles were reversed on the Bond hit on the interception right?

Maybe that gives us a first down and they never tie the game.

They gave them several generous spots. One was so bad I had to rewind and look at the major yard markers to confirm they gave them an extra 4 (!) yards on the spot.

We're coming up on 24 hours since the end of the game, and I still haven't found emotional equilibrium after the whiplash from being down 7 with 4th and 13 and the season on life support to being up 8 pts in the span of about 10 seconds of game clock.  And I willingly subject myself to this.

If its the one you are talking about, he did get the ball to the line before he got hit and twisted around.  He ended up a half yard short, but it was a good spot.

Yeah, I'm not saying it determined the outcome of the game, but it was 100% targeting.
