It was a 3rd down play.  At no point did the ball ever get close to the first down line.  I saw it was a bad spot right away, so was glad they were going to review it.  Instead they confirmed their original fuckup.

That was the most entertaining game I’ve watched in years.  Obviously I wanted the Big 12 squad to prevail, but I think they did enough to prove we should be included which is really all I cared about

And you would be 100% wrong.

Same discussion happening in multiple threads, so I'll x-post:

This is apparently too nuanced of a conversation for most college football fans to have, but if you take a step back and think about WHAT the targeting rule is trying to prevent, it's shit like what happened to Bond - a defender launching himself at the head of an airborne defenseless receiver.  In order to enforce those hits, language has been included in the rule that unfortunately lumps in many "football plays" like the Taaffe tackle - a defender inadvertently colliding helmets with a running defenseless receiver while trying to make a tackle.

I do agree that the Taaffe hit is usually called targeting, but I'm fine with neither being called.  I'd understand if both were called.  But to call the Taaffe hit WITHOUT calling the Bond one would literally be the exact opposite of the spirit of the rule.

You are correct that the outrage is mostly fueled due to which team benefitted, not the call itself.  If the jerseys were reversed and a Texas defender did what ASU did to Bond with no call, the texags servers would have burned College Station to the ground last night.

Yes. I said "It's ok, that's awful and it will get overturned". Nope. Really weird.

The people bitching about this call would be the same people saying they didn’t want penalties deciding games if this was the other way around. The guy was short of the line to gain. Also put the other missed calls under the same microscope. This is a bunch of sour grapes because their favored team didn’t win.

What was the deal with the play where they gave Skatebro an extra half yard or so so that he'd get the first down, reviewed it, and upheld the shitty call. Was that an optical illusion or something? Because he clearly did not get the ball to the marker.

Seemed short to me (his elbow maybe got but probably hard to overturn. The more interesting issue to me is the umpire had the best visual while the sideline judge was completely blocked from the seeing the ball. As the umpire goes to mark the ball short, the sideline judge is definitely calling the chains to move as if it is a clear first down. Not even worth a measurement apparently. You can see he is marking the spot with his left foot and the ball was nowhere near that spot, 100%.

The refs were basically bystanders yesterday.  They observed some shit, and announced some shit.  And conferred.

Don't disagree and as good as Williams is Smith is a notch above him.

Smith is a Mega-Tron, Julio Jones, type, 6'-3" 220 lb, physical specimen. Ryan Williams is 6'-0" 175 lb. Both are super talented, but Smith is a at a different level.

I guess I’d have to see it. Granted, I only saw the live feed and the clip posted I quoted. I didn’t see any lineman blocking in the end zone. I obviously missed it. I did see a lineman standing on the goal line not ended with anyone while the QB is scrambling to the other side of the field. If he was in the end zone it’s a penalty.

Look at the 5 second mark, OL standing in the end zone.

ASU; TD or Illegal man downfield?

It was early in the game… late 1st q or early second believe

Did anyone ever say what happened with Helm's knee on that one play? Did he just twist it and was scared an injury happened for a split second? Obviously he was fine in OT.

1 hour ago, mdmost said:

Pretty sure targeting is the only instance where a penalty is assessed after a review when it's not called on the field.

Incorrect. How do you not remember the multiple games a few years back when we had plays reviewed and were called after review for offensive pass interference or illegal man downfield?

There was a stretch that the Big12 refs very clearly targeted us and called penalties after the fact. It was complete bullshit, and I have never seen that happen to another team.

Yeah that was weird.  He grabbed his knee in such a way that I was sure he was done for the game and then a minute later was jogging off the field like nothing happened.

I thought he got turf burn or something bc his pants were above his knees and he did a 360

Yellow line was wrong.

  • Popular Post

Taaffe kept his head up, the head contact wasn’t violent at all, he didn’t launch and Taaffe wrapped him up and brought him to the ground.  The intent was clearly “tackle” not jar the ball loose and that’s why I think the no call was the right call.  Contrast that to the Bond no call where “knock him the fuck out” was the clear intent and Bond’s head jerked back violently.  If you wanna make a case that Taaffe should have been penalized, be prepared to explain the no call for Bond (this is meant in general, not necessarily for anyone here).

The media picks and chooses the Taaffe tackle because they are playing devil’s advocate in favor of the team that lost.

Dirty play by the ASU LB. He wasn't in on the tackle but falls on Helm, who is already down, and grabs his lower leg and twists as he rolls over the top of Helm. It actually was forceful enough to rotate Helm's body position 45 degrees. I am sure Helm was fearful of injury. No reason for it other than being dirty.

You know they reviewed it, right? Is it possible that there’s something about the rule or its interpretation that’s been adjusted this year? We’ve had big hits that looked like classic (read: shitty) targeting in every game that were reviewed and found not to be targeting. Clearly, our coaches and players have a great understanding of the rule. Over the last 10+ years we were trained to think every big hit was targeting.

I distinctly remember seeing where the first down marker pole and chain were shorter than the start of the yellow line.  I remember thinking everyone’s going by the yellow line, but I don’t think the yellow line reflects the true position of the first down to make

I know your avatar is a troll face, and so assume this is you being one, but just for any true idiots out there:

1. It's a judgment call.

2. Your judgment of this sucks.

3. Here's the actual rule, proving #2 above.

Quote

"Targeting" means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:

- Launch-a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area

- A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground

- Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area

- Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

Well they didn't call the one on Bond. Maybe it was a make up no-call.

Well to be fair I don't understand the targeting rules.

But that spearing of Bond's helmet with the crown of the defenders helmet was not called so...

heads up for anyone looking for the full Clemson or ASU games on youtube....Dizney is putting the hammer down and blocking everything. I have both game captures but the only way to grab them for the average person is from a torrent site.

Outside of the crew that made the call, have any former officials or rules experts said it wasn't targeting?

One of the mods on the LHN subreddit started a patreon account to host the game videos. You have to join to watch them, but joining is free. He just asks that some people donate some money to cover the cost.

People are acting like this was some 2018 Saints-Rams PI non-call and it’s not even fucking close. I think most of us here know this was just a horribly officiated game all around, had come to terms that we could rightfully lose this game because of how Texas played, and just hoped they’d get it going in OT, which they did. ASU had their chances and didn’t get it done. Case closed.

That just lets you watch them, not download. Downloading from youtube is easy and free, not so much with patreon.

I think I am 100% correct that we were lucky they didn't call it. I'm glad they didn't.

I am not 100% percent certain it was targeting. I worded my position poorly from the get go but got dug myself a rhetorical hole that was hard to get out of. Oh well. It won't be the last time.

They didn’t bring out the chains so not sure what the review crew uses other than the views we also saw.

I meant that the position of the chains on the sideline looked to be before where the yellow line across the field was artificially placed.  I was day drinking, so I’m not saying my recollection is correct - just that I have a fuzzy memory of it.
