He's my same height and proportions about six foot, so I think anything that fits me will fit him. I have tried many many tries to hit golf balls consistently. He's only played once with his friends, and he wants a cheap FB Marketplace set, which is fine with me. Or is a Play it Again Sports type of place a better bet? Or a real golf store? I think he just needs the bare minimum - irons, a driver, a putter, and a wedge, a bag....that's probably it. I doubt he even needs shoes yet. Does $150 sound like the right price for a used set? Also, I met a guy at the gym a couple of weeks ago. He's an instructor and he gave me his card for lessons. $100/hr. I asked if that was a good price or not. He said it was a great price if I ask around. Any advice on equipment and lessons appreciated! When my daughter was starting, I bought her a cheap set of Strata beginners clubs. Basically cheap ass driver, hybrids, cavity back irons, shitty ass putter, and carry bag. I think I spent $200 for the set including bag. In hindsight, I wish I would've used that $200 on "nicer" set. After a year, I built/bought her a better set, and now the shitty Strata set is just sitting in the garage. Sooooo, get him a decent cavity back iron set. Used TM Rocketbladez, older set of named Callaway releases like Rogue, Cobra, etc. Cavity back is cavity back. Weight low and back to help get the ball up. Get cast irons, and not forged. He'll tear up the forged clubs. Then get some older hybrids. Hybrids haven't improved much. I still game a 2014 4H from Adams. Then get him a 5-6 year old driver. Something with a Max name is good because it'll be forgiving (read, spinny to help him get the ball up and reduce the slice). If buying off ebay, I'd stay away from anything used from TM, Ping, and Titleist. There are a shitton of fake clubs from those brands. Callaway, Srixon, Cleveland don't seem to have a problem of fake clubs on ebay. eBay is the cheapest route. I buy and sell clubs on eBay all the time. Edited December 2Dec 2 by crash_davis

December 2Dec 2 I bought 3 skyforger 002 wedges on Black Friday. I can’t hit my vokey sm10s for shit. Going to sell them and break even on the Takomos.

If so, I have a set of irons, 3W, and driver (head only for driver) I no longer need that I'll just give away. Cobra forged tec GW - 4i, Taylor Made M2 driver and 3W. Also, don't cheap on lessons. Cheap on clubs.

December 3Dec 3 i have a set of titliest ap1's 714, very new grips multiple drivers i'd let go, mostly taylor made a set of ping tour wedges; square grooves probably a fairway wood or two 50 putters or so, not sure what i'd let go

December 8Dec 8 anyone have any experience with golf simulators? thinking about getting one for the house and they're all over the place. would love to hear from anyone who's looked at them / purchased one and has thoughts.

Stupidly, years ago I spent too many lessons at GolfTec hitting on mats and a simulator. Chunky shots are not punished any where near as much as they are punished on the course. Also with drivers, I would always hit big slinging hooks on simulators but ball flight on the course was very slight draw or straight. Also find that hitting irons on mats on the simulator and range also leads my balls to draw much more than on the course. Probably not the answer you're looking for but from experience, I wouldn't take the ball flights and distances as gospel.

I have a SkyTrak from ~5+ years ago so I can opine on it. In general, it's pretty accurate and fun to use. The pairing with your device requirement is a bit annoying - sometimes it struggles to connect and in general, I'd much prefer the unit to come with it's own display like the new Garmin does. But otherwise, for $2k and the ability to plot ball flight (big selling point), calc RPMs, launch angle, swing speed, ball speed, face angle at impact, etc... I've been pretty happy with it. However... If you're even remotely OCD, it 100% triggers that and you start to fuss over 0.5 degrees open and 2 yards offline and 500 rpms too high and.... You get the idea. Which then requires you get a good hitting mat to avoid injury because you will certainly end up swinging a ton. I use RealFeelGolfMats.com and have been happy with them, no elbow injuries and it's been in use since 2021.

December 11Dec 11 New club day. A friend of mine just opened a play it again sports. I get first crack at the golf stuff that comes in. Just picked up an unused Scotty Cameron pro platinum Newport 2 mid slant from 2000. And a brand new vokey sm10 black vapor 56* M grind that was still in the plastic. Too bad it’s fucking December in Pittsburgh and currently snowing.
December 11Dec 11 10 hours ago, tx 3 putt said: ugh, i really need a mid slant 50+ putters and not one is a mid slant? I was on the fence about it because I’ve only used one putter for the last 20+ years, a Cleveland made 8802, so why try anything different now. I paid $250 for the pair, so since the one vapor is $225 retail, I told myself I was getting the Scotty for $25, and how could I turn that down.
December 11Dec 11 According to Brad Faxon, who recently played a round with the famed putter brand’s namesake, Matsuyama own “close to 400” Scotty Cameronhttps://www.golfdigest.com/story/hideki-matsuyama-scotty-cameron-putter-collection-smylie-kaufman-podcast-story

December 13Dec 13 Popular Post I’m trying not to jinx it, but we close on a house Jan 30 that backs up to the #9 tee box on one of the nicer semi-private clubs in Jax. I’ll be able to walk out my back yard and loop 6, 9 or 18. Driving range is about 500 yds away. I turn 50 next week and this sets up the next 15 (?) years nicely!
December 14Dec 14 The nightly golf ball fishing is going to be fun. Only downside is I may also see a few flyers from #1 in my front yard
December 15Dec 15 We're going to be in New Orleans for a long weekend soon and are thinking about trying to get on somewhere. any recs for a round in / around NO? anyone know anything about the Audubon course?

We swam many a golf course pond in High School (Raveneaux CC anyone?) getting more balls than we could use in a lifetime but it seems a little questionable in FL. Unless of course, you are Paul Bedard or something.

December 17Dec 17 Let’s see em! 123 is the high scoreCan’t compete with 123 rounds but had 49 courses for my 72 rounds (which was actually 56 courses for 80 since my Bandon rounds were out of season)
December 17Dec 17 You guys are killing me with the amount of golf you play. My season only runs from April - October, and I still don’t come close. Just didn’t have enough time. 19 rounds, plus a few team events, on 16 courses. Hardest course by rating was Mid Pines @ 72.3 / 138. I think pinehurst #2 played harder, but I played like shit at both so it was hard to tell. The real disappointment of the season was going from 14.1 to 16.5. I finished last season strong and was planning to try to get from 14 to <12 to try to make a run at single digits next season. Not enough time to practice and pinehurst beating me up for a week sent me in the wrong direction. Went into that week as 14.1, left at 17.8. Going from 16.5 to 9 in one season seems unlikely.
December 17Dec 17 Y'all got me on rounds and courses though I'm pretty happy with my handicap progression:
December 17Dec 17 Anyone done a golf trip to Kohler in Wisconsin or Big Cedar Lodge in Missou? Looking at maybe booking one of these in 2026.

I was in a similar spot, got down to 14.2, best in my life. Slid back to 17.5 with a couple really good rounds rolling off, but feeling really good about how it's going. But same, when I was 14.2 mid-year was hoping single digits in 2026, but dropping 8 shots feels unlikely but then again, I will turn my cap over 4 times, so no reason why not!

Haven't done Kohler but have done Sand Valley plus a few other smaller Wisc courses and they are all awesome. Wisconsin golf is tremendous. Never been myself but I've never heard anything great about Big Cedar Lodge. Sounds like a gimmicky golf tourist trap based on reviews from friends.
