Every dollar a beginner puts into clubs beyond just having something made in the last 20 years before getting at least one lesson is wasted money in my opinion. The level of enjoyment of the game someone will have by being started on the right path to a proper swing vs buying new clubs and not being able to swing them is immeasurable. Being able to shoot in the neighborhood of 100 with shit clubs is massively more fun than writing down 126 without counting all of the mis-hits with new clubs. Get 3 lessons and get to the range at least half a dozen times between them to work in what he’s teaching you. Whatever cadence allows you to get to the range enough between the lessons. That would potentially take years off of the learning curve. Do it before you build a bunch of bullshit faults into your swing. Then you can make an informed decision on your clubs. Anyone have any lesson recs in the N. Dallas burbs area?..bonus points if they can tolerate a lefty. Topgolf and Putt-Putt are the extent of my experience, but friends in FW/Austin/Houston are semi-regulars and I'd like to start participating beyond getting drunk in the cart.

Could've been a lot better, too, as I made a triple from 90 out, a double from 102 out, and a triple on a 150 yard par 3 when I totally gacked a 6 iron tee shot. So I was +8 on those three holes, +1 on the other 15, including going birdie-eagle on 8 and 9. Was super proud also after totally dicking that 6 iron on 17, had a 5 iron in on 18, knowing I needed bird for 79 and flushed it to 12 feet. Just ran it by the edge, sadly. I do have one lower score, a 77 at par 70 Mustang in Taylor, but this was a significantly better round overall. I followed that 77 up with a 108. I am playing Monday at 830 at Star Ranch, hopefully a better follow up this time! (Two spots open if anyone wants to play!) Played Plum Creek again Saturday on 3 hours of sleep. Was +6 through 6, then hit 9 of the next 12 greens, including 8 pars and a birdie. Again got to 18 needing a birdie for 79. Sadly drove into the fairway bunker, but then hit a fantastic 5 iron to 20 feet for a very real look at the 79. Buddy's putt on similar line was really fast, and I left mine 8 inches short in the jar for another 80 and my second USGA Exceptional Score Adjustment in 3 months.
June 10Jun 10 Playing there Sunday. It’s my home course. Live just around the corner. It’s in pretty good shape now
June 11Jun 11 Playing there Sunday. It’s my home course. Live just around the corner. It’s in pretty good shape nowI really like it, other than the annoyance that there are two par 5s with forced layup off the tee. Was in great shape. Greens were just finishing recovering from being punched, rolling well and quick.
June 11Jun 11 I don’t mind 9. Can push it down there a bit and only have 210-ish. 2 is dumb and your net 62. Think I gotta report you to Yip Strickler

Big Yip candidate, I have a history of some pretty crazy net rounds, very high variance player. My career best is 77 on a par 70, I was about a 21 at the time. Next round was a 108. I also have been +2 on the 11th tee and finished +21. 38-55. Was 6 up on my dad in our match on 11 tee, lost 1 down. I played two days after the 80, hit 7 GIR and still shot 101. Was +16 on 3 holes. At least this one got posted as a 94 instead.
June 12Jun 12 Number 6 has been removed from the itinerary. No 3 moves from that afternoon to an early morning slot and no 10 gets added in that afternoon. Mid pines, 2, 3, 8, 10, cradle.
June 15Jun 15 I went over to Jimmy Clay this morning to practice a bit. I realized that I first played there 45 years ago when I was 12/13. I also remembered that I was a better golfer then
June 15Jun 15 Bladed a second shot that skipped on pond 5-7 tomes times hit a wall shot 20 feet in the air and landed 10 feet from pin - par . Happy Father’s Day to me ! Enjoy your golf today gentlemen .
June 17Jun 17 I actually played Jimmy Clay yesterday. The course is in incredible shape. Fairways are lush and the greens are the best I’ve ever seen there. Pretty amazing. I will try Kizer on Thursday or Friday.

June 20Jun 20 I played Riverside yesterday. Average to below average shape. Some greens had sand and black stuff. I'm not a big fan of the layout. It use to be a great flowing course, now it has some weirdness (not in a good way).

June 21Jun 21 Back when it was Austin Country Club and the early days of it being public, the layout was longer and more interesting. Holes got moved around and shape changed to fit the ACC campus. What is now 18 use to be a great hole (#3). #1 was a real par 4. There weren't the BS back to back par 3s.

That was well before my time. Riverside is where I started to play golf during college (98-01). Been the same since them from what I can recall. Never had a chance to see it pre-ACC.
June 24Jun 24 Played at Lions. I was a bit disappointed by the fairway conditions. Usually they have it very nice in the weeks ahead of the firecracker. There were lots of of bald patches. Greens overall were pretty good however. I’m playing there again on Friday. Saw 4 deer on the course, including a young buck. I had never seen a deer there (500+ rounds).
June 24Jun 24 I think I asked before about golf apps. But I settled on TheGrint. It had the best combo of scorekeeping, gps integration (phone and watch) and usga handicap tracking. 18Birdies is pretty close. There is still lots of room for improvement however.
June 24Jun 24 Finally got out to play Memorial Park after a long hiatus and the first time since the renovations. Greens were aerated sometime in the not too distant past and were fast as lightning. I dig most of the changes but the No. 9 par 3 just feels weird. Have a follow up tee time on thursday now that I have a better idea what to expect.

I’ve been using the grint for yardage on my watch and it works wellMy only complaint is the hole number is hard to read with my shitty eyesight. So if I get out of sync it takes a bit to get back on trackBeen thinking about upgrading to handicap and scoring

I had never seen a deer there (500+ rounds). I play 2-3 times a week at Lions for the last 5 years. The conditions are typical for late June. We have been in a drought. They water the crap out of the course (I play early early mornings when they are still watering the shit out of the fairways and greens) but some spots are just rocky as shit. No amount of watering is going to make grass grow there. Just walk in the trees, you'll see the natural terrain which is rocks, much like the rest of the hill country. There are ALWAYS deer. The rounds where we don't see deer are far fewer than the rounds where we see deer. On Sunday,on the 1st hole, there was a good size doe and young buck on the first fairway by the green. They let you walk within a couple of feet. There are a ton of hawks there. In the winter, there's always at least a pair of Egyptian geese who make the pond between 16th and 17th their home. There was an owl in the trees on the right fairway of the 10th that attack a guy and carved up his arm pretty bad. Shit's National Geographic out there. Mo Willy and Kizer are in GREAT shape. Clay is in good shape considering there greens are usually crap. We are blessed to have 4 good to great munies which are relatively cheap to play. Edited June 24Jun 24 by crash_davis
June 24Jun 24 I was telling the sooner kid I was playing with, that Austin is blessed with cheap and good golf. I’m glad there are deer on the course. I haven’t played muni in probably 7 years, so it’s new to me for sure. I’ll be back on Friday. Playing clay tomorrow and kizer on Thursday.
June 25Jun 25 Kinda disagree? Lions tilts me because I get a relentless barrage of bullshit bounces and lies. Clay is solid with a couple really asinine holes. Kizer and MoWilly are great. Of course virtually impossible to play any of these on a weekend morning. Most other courses in Austin are either abhorrent conditions or egregiously expensive. I live two miles from Avery but they want more on the weekend than I paid to pay fucking Bandon Dunes. I usually end up driving an hour or so to get reasonable conditions and pricing. Oklahoma City has way more and better cheap good golf options. San Antonio is way better. These shouldn’t be the case.
June 25Jun 25 Yeah, I get it. I just love lions because it's where I learned to play and played tons of Jr and high school golf there. Kizer is in such good shape now, but with most of the water drained it isn't at its peak. I agree about Avery Ranch. Way too pricy. Same for Grey Rock.
June 25Jun 25 I would love to be playing Kizer this weekend, water drained or not, but couldn’t line up at 6a to get a Sat morning time so driving an hour to Kingsland to play Lighthouse instead. I love the vibes at Lions and often find myself enjoying it and then have 17 shots in a row off of softpan or rockdirt or what have you, and being a yard off and bouncing 25 yards down hardpan mountain.
June 25Jun 25 The Austin public golf scene compared to the other big cities in Texas is embarrassing. All of them except Austin have a good assortment of courses at varying price points with many consistently in good condition. The only courses in Austin you can count on for good conditions (Avery, Falcon head, Wolf dancer, TV, Star.... I think that's it) are, as previously noted, egregiously expensive. The other courses in Austin all vary wildly as far as playing conditions and just general course quality. Not to mention the round lengths for the cheaper courses are frustratingly long.
June 29Jun 29 I went north this morning to play Blackhawk. It is indeed in rough shape. Number 6 is probably in the worst condition of any hole in austin. The layout is actually decent. I wish they would fix it up.
June 30Jun 30 I really liked Blackhawk back in the early 2000s. They messed a couple holes up when they put more houses in but it was still good. Then at some point it just became a shithole. It’s a shame.
July 4Jul 4 Firewheel Bridges (Garland, TX) I shot my first ever even par on nine holes, 36 on the Champions Nine. I followed it up with a 45 on the Masters nine. Couldn't miss on the front nine and then couldn't hit on the back nine. I love/hate this game!
July 5Jul 5 My last 4 rounds include an 81, an 84, and a 104. From 1996-2020, I broke 85 twice total. Did it once each in 2021, 22, 23, and 24. Have done it 5 times in 2025, and also have an 85 and two 86s. Golf.
July 6Jul 6 Was going to play crystal falls today, but just got the message that the course is closed due to the rain. On the positive side, I just received my new Takomo 101T irons. Thursday will be my last day in Austin/USA, so I’m hoping I can get a round in to try them out before I move to the UK.

Do those apps cause the Apple Watch battery to burn down fast? I’m unclear whether it’s turning on the gps, or using gps from the iPhone.
July 7Jul 7 Do those apps cause the Apple Watch battery to burn down fast? I’m unclear whether it’s turning on the gps, or using gps from the iPhone. I’ve noticed it burns the battery a bit faster. Like at the end of round I’m at 60%.
July 7Jul 7 Author On 7/6/2025 at 7:24 AM, Fastbreak said: Was going to play crystal falls today, but just got the message that the course is closed due to the rain. Crystal Falls conditions are absolute garbage. I (tried to) played on Juneteenth-- range is unusable, greens are dirt and weed trash. Played 9 holes in 2 hours 45 minutes and that's all I could take.
July 7Jul 7 Played Crystal in a scramble June 30 and the greens were mediocre/bumpy, but the rest was good/fine?
July 8Jul 8 Lions was playable today. A few wet spots where I took a big mud divot, but the greens were generally good. Tomorrow I’m back to Kizer. We will see how it drained.
July 11Jul 11 How is Memorial Park for beginner-ish players? I just started playing but am down 30 shots since i started a few months ago. Happy with progress since i started in April but happy in the way one is happy with someone on My 600-lb Life who lost 300 lbs…. Easy to lose 300 lbs when you are fat as shit just like it’s easy to drop 30 shots when you suck and shoot 130 first time out ( just cracked 98 at Sugarcreek). So still suck. I still have clubs gifted to me that were made in 1999 but now that I feel I’m committed to learning and playing this game, I’m going to buy new clubs in next month. I’ve take seven lessons and instructor finally told me my swing is far along to consider buying since swing is stabilizing a bit. Long way of saying I still hate slowing groups down so if Memorial Park is for like players in the 80s, I’ll continue playing at random places…but I live right by park so it would be nice to go play less than 5 minutes from my house rather than hodgepodge of places all over Houston I’ve played at that are 4-5x further.
July 12Jul 12 Had a taylormade M3 driver. Hit it great. Thought hey I have all these gift cards to dicks sporting goods why not buy the new taylormade Q35i or what ever the fuck. Been playing with it and I slice everything. Fml great game though 10/10 would recommend playing golf
July 12Jul 12 I was in Oregon last week for vacation. I’ve played this course over a dozen times, it is so much fun. Only got to play 9 this time, we were busy. Shot -1 and was upset. [emoji1787]https://course.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/course/course/manzanitagc/detailedscorecard.htm
