Happy with progress since i started in April but happy in the way one is happy with someone on My 600-lb Life who lost 300 lbs…. Easy to lose 300 lbs when you are fat as shit just like it’s easy to drop 30 shots when you suck and shoot 130 first time out ( just cracked 98 at Sugarcreek). So still suck. I still have clubs gifted to me that were made in 1999 but now that I feel I’m committed to learning and playing this game, I’m going to buy new clubs in next month. I’ve take seven lessons and instructor finally told me my swing is far along to consider buying since swing is stabilizing a bit. Long way of saying I still hate slowing groups down so if Memorial Park is for like players in the 80s, I’ll continue playing at random places…but I live right by park so it would be nice to go play less than 5 minutes from my house rather than hodgepodge of places all over Houston I’ve played at that are 4-5x further. Go play memorial park GC as often as possible. Its a muny, it is there for people like you. And all others. 1 hour ago, tx 3 putt said: go swing that and the elylte report back I love mine.
July 13Jul 13 Played first time in London today. Went out by myself (didn’t want to wait for the late arrivers). Played 18 in under 3 hours. The course was playing very weird. I hit 3 drives which I saw land on the dead middle of the fairway that kicked somewhere to a lost ball. I can handle losing a ball with a big slice, but mid fairway just sucks. A golf ball with an air tag in it is the next big thing I hadn’t walked 18 in a long time and now I’m paying the price…

July 17Jul 17 I might have made a huge mistake. I got invited to a club in north London. They hosted everything and after the round a bunch of members got me drunk on the terrace overlooking 12 and 18. £1600 later and I’m a member. I have no idea how winter golf will work.
July 18Jul 18 What is the most holes you have played in a day? I’ve done 36 many times but about 15 years ago I flew out to Lake Tahoe and teed off first light. Wasn’t even thinking about anything more than 18, we played. Then 18 again. Then 18 again. Sun was falling so we went to 1 and played that hole in the dark. So, 55 holes.
July 18Jul 18 Friend of mine who was a former LPGA player and college All-American just did a golf marathon for a fundraiser. Played 268 holes. 84 birdies, 2 eagles. 38,500 steps despite cart. 14.5 straight hours, averaged right at an hour a round.

FYI, they have a composite course which takes most of River's course and adds a few from Meadow Valley that is considered their tournament course and some think that layout is the best of all the courses on your list. Irish is fun. Straits is a bruiser, hope they have the bugs under control on your visit. My personal ranking of those would be: 1. Straits 2a. River 2b. Erin 2c. Irish 4. Meadow Valley

July 21Jul 21 Got skunked on the am walkup list at Lions yesterday, so wound up going around a couple of times at Hancock. Course is in great shape, greens are very much not. As said above, go play as often as you can. In many ways it is much more forgiving than it was before the renovation. For the resident rate, it is one of the best deals in the state. And the practice facility (the chipping green, not the driving range) is probably the best in the city and is free
July 21Jul 21 River absolutely ate my lunch. The greens were 12-14. Rolled so fast. Really cool course. Shot a 92. Just wrecked. played Irish today and it was awesome. Great shape. Greens about a 10 shot an 84. Felt better today

July 28Jul 28 Just finished off a week long trip to Scotland - played 6 courses in 4 days, walked all of them. Incredible trip, incredible courses. Golf is so accessible there, it's bonkers. And the courses make anything in the US look like a manufactured joke. It's almost upsetting the difference between the US and Scotland when it comes to golf. Day 1: Cabot Highlands Day 2: Tain + Fortrose and Rosemarkie Day 3: Brora + Royal Dornoch Championship Course Day 4: Cruden Bay (9 hole course + Championship Course) We joined Tain as full members for a whopping 350 GBP for the year (which is ridiculous unto itself and isn't unique to Tain, all these courses have stupid cheap annual membership dues). That got us free rounds at Tain (85 GBP normally), a 30 GBP round at Brora and F&R (100+ GBP normally), 25% off at Royal Dornoch (80 GBP savings), and 50% off at Cabot (160 GBP savings). As the saying goes, pictures don't do it justice. Hard to capture the elevation changes but here you go! Cabot: Tain: Fortrose and Rosemarkie: Brora: Royal Dornoch: Cruden Bay:
July 29Jul 29 I’m about to be 52, I work in finance, and I live practically next door to Mo Willie, so I’ve decided I’m finally old and boring enough to play golf. Here’s where I’m at: I can’t hit a ball off the tee. I’ve played maybe 45 holes in my life, including a couple times around the Butler Pitch and putt. I have never played an 18 hole round. I’ve spent some time at the driving range in fits and starts, with no plan, getting worse with every ball. My goal is to break 100 by the end of the year. I took a lesson at Golf Galaxy last week to get feedback. Based on her assessment my balance, mobility, and strength are all far above average. My swing mechanics aren’t terrible, but my swing is super inconsistent and striking is a mess. Not great, but she gave me some clear things to work on and it helped. I also watched some Danny Maude videos that were incredibly helpful. As of now, 9 days later, I’m striking irons cleanly and straight around 60% of the time, but loft and distance are inconsistent. Here’s my plan from here, looking for feedback. 1) Swing mechanics - Daily practice for 5-10 mins with no ball, paying special attention to rhythm, feeling the weight of the club head, and approach angle. 2) driving range 3-4X per week. 20 balls each PW, 9, 7i. 3) When I’m hitting the ball well 80% of the time, add 5 iron on the range and play the 9 hole par 3 course at Penick campus when time allows. 4) practice putts 20mins, 1-2X/week. Hit out of bunkers 1X/week. 5) When I’m no longer confusing myself with the above, take a lesson focused on hitting from a tee, and work on tee shots with driver and 5 wood at range after warming up with irons. 6) once tee shots are straight 80% of the time, Play 18 Feedback on all of the above is welcome, here are some specific questions for the golfers: 1) does this plan seem sound? 2) should I buy a rangefinder? 3) my clubs are possibly shit. I bought them from a guy who made them in his garage in Cedar Park during the Covid era, because I couldn’t find any left handed clubs and wanted to buy clubs for some reason. Should I try to improve with these or start fresh new ones? 4) How irritating is it to play with a beginner on a public course? I’m very open to advice but I know people like to be helpful. My concern is that somebody I’m playing with might feel obligated to coach me up on their afternoon off, and that’s not fair for them. Edited July 29Jul 29 by Bozo_Casanova

My concern is that somebody I’m playing with might feel obligated to coach me up on their afternoon off, and that’s not fair for them. 1.) if you stay on the above plan you will improve. Be patient with yourself the game(swing, results....) is hauntingly mysterious at times. 2.) it won't make a material difference to your progress. is nice information to have. 3.) yes, but resist the temptation to go beserk. Look for highly regarded "game improvement" irons. More forgiving. 4.) Most golfers are extremely welcoming and nice. Largely you will NOT be given unsolicited advice, most of us are fellow sufferers. Learn course/play etiquette. Know when its time to pick up your ball on a hole. Don't expect people you are paired with to watch you grind out a 15 on a par 4
July 29Jul 29 Plan seems generally sound. One thing is that the Penick course does have three par 4 holes, it isn’t a pure par 3. A couple of them have decent forced carries also. Define “good contact 80% of the time” because there are long-term golfers who don’t have that haha. I’d say a rangefinder is pretty superfluous at this point. I just got a $50 one for certain times but there are free GPS apps that will def be just fine until you are really really dialed. I only use my rangefinder when my GPS isn’t working or there are huge greens with no map or cart GPS or other code to say if flag is front/middle/back, or to shoot targets when I’m at a range. You should basically always be going for the center of the green or the fattest part away from trouble (so if water is left, aiming right edge etc). Some people may be irritated by a beginner but those people are largely assholes. You clearly are going to be more prepared than some beginners who are whiffing every third swing or whatever. I’d say be prepared to pick your ball up if you’re having a disaster hole and you’re paired up esp if there is room in front of you. Taking 2 minutes to line up a putt for 12 will do it haha. I’m def down to go play [emoji106][emoji106].
July 29Jul 29 Also if someone you’re paired with starts to give unwanted advice, just say something like “thanks! I’m working with a coach and he said I can’t take swing tips or watch golf YouTube because it muddles what we are working on”Also rec Dan Grieve short game videos on YouTube.

As in, not partially or completely missing the ball with the club or hitting the turf 3 inches behind the ball. Literally just putting the club head on the ball.
