Well fuck, my plan was to leave at 12 from San Marcos on Friday... looking like that would be a mistake, does anyone think that is doable? My wife has a thing going on until 11:30 that I cant really miss.

Realistically you’ll be done by 11:32 and leave by 11:40.

The issue isn't going to be in the metroplex at all. It's going to be outside the metro on the way in. It's not complete nonsense, but that's the doomsday scenario.

There will be no doomsday scenario it'll be fine.

Good question.  If this were like a normal bowl they'd be there almost a week ahead of time for all of the press and photo ops and trips to whatever the Dallas version of Disneyland is.  But since this is the third round of CFP games, I don't know how they're managing it.

I forgot the part of the game of football where you drive 100 miles in dicey conditions (on untreated roads) with a bunch of navel gazing chud babies staring at their phones while going 85mph. You must watch different games, and never been thru even the slightest winter storm panic in this state.

4" of snow on Thursday is backing off? What's your baseline I guess?

Considering some places were saying 8-10" of snow, yes, 4" is backing off.

Those of us who have lived in DFW for any length of time are used to doomsday winter storm warnings and accompanying alerts to stock up on food and supplies, only to have a normal cold day with zero snow.

On the other hand, we occasionally get an actual winter storm with sleet and snow. When that happens the area goes into a virtual standstill and diving a few miles can take a couple of hours. We won't know which we will get until it happens.

The team is flying there tomorrow afternoon.

So, for you people who have never lived anywhere in your life that has snow, 31F is not cold enough to freeze snow to roads with any kind of traffic on them and you need to have below 26 for 10+ hours for good thick ice sheets to form that are bad enough to cause big issues. The fact that forecast has a high of 42 on Friday may as well be that there's a fucking furnace for ice/snow/etc. It will melt in less than 10 minutes at that temp and it's not enough precip to even keep the roads wet.

Get a fucking grip. Holy shit. 4 inches of snow isn't 4 inches of rain.

Yeah but 4 inches of snow in Texas is basically 8+ anywhere else. Bunch of fucking regards who can’t drive in it and will flip their shit

But what if it's really, really, really cold when they land?

Also everything is gonna be salted to fuck and back so good luck freezing anything above 26.

I do think if the storm pushes south and fucks the roads on the way in that's a concern. It's not at all a concern if you are anywhere in north Texas already.

35 to Dallas is gonna be completely fine Friday afternoon, with no ice or snow. It may be slightly wet. Thursday night will be sketch. Wednesday is completely clear.

Take a gummy.

Would love to see your source on all this science. Austin iced the fuck over during treepocolypse and the temp barely got below 31.

100% agree.  Been saying it for years.

Does Dallas have salt trucks? When I grew up they sprayed sand on the streets to help with traction, but that doesn't melt ice. I wouldn't be too concerned about land, as it does need to freeze pretty deep in order to ice roads that are land-bound. It's the many, many bridges that you have to be concerned about. That shit will freeze in minutes.

The sun has fuckall to do with melting shit that's above freezing.

Is that so?

The sun angle is around 30 to 35 degrees from late December through mid January.

Even in February, the sun angle is noticeably higher and thus it can warm the ground quicker and melt snow and ice quicker even if the temperature is below 32 degrees.

They use the tears of Cowboys fans. Works just as well and is plentiful in supply, no need for trucks!

Sure, Dallas does. They sand anytime there's a chance of ice. The issue isn't does Dallas. The issue is does Arlington and Grand Prairie. That's the two areas you have to transverse to get to the game. I'd imagine they're going to do everything possible to ensure people can make it to the game. It happened during the Super Bowl when the area iced over and the game still occurred.

The temperature given by the forecasters is ambient...ie. temperature in the shade. The black bulb is the temperature in the sun. Notice how ice will remain in the shade on cold winter days while anything in the sun will have melted already?

I know they have sand trucks. I'm asking if they spray salt. Sand helps with traction. Salt keeps ice from forming. Sanding does very little to mitigate the formation of ice. Salt does.

That being said, I don't think it's gonna matter based on current forecast models.

Meteorologist here.

There is definitely the potential for a serious transportation mess in the DFW metroplex on Thursday/night/Friday morning. There are a couple of questions that are very difficult to answer at this point, including the profile of the atmosphere (will it produce snow, sleet, or freezing rain) and how quickly temperatures reach above freezing on Friday morning. Some modeling recently has indicated that DFW may only briefly freeze on Thursday night/Friday morning, which would speed up the transition to wet rather than icy streets on Friday morning.

Bottom line: Any travel into DFW after noon on Friday should be fine, but before then there's definitely the potential for a clusterfuck. Especially if the stars align and the region gets half an inch of freezing rain.
