Hitting the road from Austin as we speak

anyone who has that option, it might be a cunning plan

right now it looks like 75mph is in play well past the split and i'm guessing very little traffic

Taken about 30 minutes ago at the dog park near The George Bush and the Tollway...

(Beauregarde on the right)

Now, it's a consistent snow with sleet blend and is pretty much sticking to the roads.

@The Golden Hat

i had not looked at the radar in an hour....  by the time you get to hillsboro a winter mix blob is likely to have moved over i35

current temps: hillsboro 35f,, wax 32f, cleburne 33f

consider this in your decision - you may be down to 30mph from the split, i.e. 2+ hours to i20

target: tailgate

the best thing you can do tomorrow is have a competent shotgun google map analyst, either in the vehicle with you, or remote on hands free device

someone not driving should be monitoring the freeze line, road status (black/red/yellow/green) and the surl for real-time reports in this thread

this cap shows 3 different routes from the i35 split to the tailgate location at 816 North Collins 76011

image.thumb.png.0cbac2352291809824aec26a32dbbe12.png

i have comments about each of these routes but will hold off until later this afternoon as we see how the day plays out

If going the 35W route, I generally take 20 to 820 to 30 in order to avoid downtown fr worth.

It's been snowing fat snowflakes in Prosper for like 3 hours now. Looks like a winter wonderland. (Cue the "Prosper isn't Texas it's Southern Oklahoma" jokes now)

Nice of that mustang driver to account for the snow/hazardous driving conditions by leaving an additional 6 inches of room between his car and the car in front of him

Nothing much in Kessler/Oak Cliff but freezing rain.
Plano and all points north got plenty of snow. Kids are mad.

Running joke with my wife is they get everything up north(of 30).

I practiced plowing plenty, but the first time I actually plowed, it was over really quickly and was quite disappointing for all involved.

One stroke, done.

I'm in. I'm out. I'm smokin'.

Welcome to why driving in the Metroplex under any level of snow, rain, or ice is an issue. People simply do not know how to drive safely here. Keep your head on a swivel tomorrow.

Probably someone from Chicago mocking all the "idiot Texans" who don't know how to drive in the conditions. Will end up totaled out on a guardrail somewhere this afternoon.

Almost all of the freeways/tollways are concrete, not asphalt. More slick spots. But yeah there are terrible drivers here.

Nothing more invigorating than driving a high torque rwd vehicle in slick conditions.

double-edged sword: above freezing downtown fort worth will be sanded out the gazoo, and the north 35 to east 30 ramp is only elevated for 300 feet:

all else equal, your route backtracks and is not 1 of the 3 google suggestions.... that said it could be the best play - who knows as the situation changes from hour to hour

it's all about what google traffic is showing in realtime

having every cell in your vehicle loaded with google turn-by-turn for a different route is the way to go...  you will get a "recalculating" message if that route craters

That’s called being careful for Dallas drivers. It’s usually 2 inches.

Yeah and I’m trying to think about the flyovers involved in the 287 route. Might just be to get on 287, and that’s further south, but it’s likely to have little attention paid to it in terms of sand or slurry treatment.

for those with any of the toll badges, 287 to 161 from either austin or houston would be my #1 play

the ntta system will be the safest roads in the metroplex

Say, DFW doesn’t have many rwd only pickup trucks, does it?

so all these predictions were wrong?

ignore this

161 doesn't connect to 287

360 connects to 287

all precip falling at that junction is wet

but there is no traffic at all

I20 between I35W and 820 has been under construction fyi. Might be better off just staying on i35w up to i30.

East DFW near Ray Hubbard.

Had some nice big flakes around 8 to 9, then it petered out and just a very fine steady drizzle.  Nothing sticking to the ground.  Everything but the schools seems open.

DFW is a cluster today. Anyone flying in is likely to be impacted.

Pretty crazy how at my house it keeps fluctuating between snow, sleet and rain.  I'm guessing all dictated by whatever 1-2 degrees fluctuation in temp at any given time.  We were all snow most of the AM, then sleet and rain for a bit late morning.   We just had about 30 minutes of snow and now shifting back to sleet/rain.  Looking out the windows probably getting to the point where I would have no desire to drive on roads in our neighborhood.

Just checked and 2 flights from Columbus have been cancelled and 2 delayed. Flights from Cincy/Pitt cancelled and several from Detroit and Cleveland cancelled. That's a shame.

Was on Tollway moving from Mockingbird to Forest just now. Minimal traffic, but I fishtailed a few times. It’s not that bad, and is more snow than sleet, but it ain’t great.

Didn’t realize the DNT was now a runway at DFW.

Yeah, but we had a little freezing rain before the snow. Not a good combination.

Be safe
