I still would like a good reason why we need a time limit.

The versatility of being able to update OP’s with more information as an ongoing situation develops adds value.

This applies to game threads, hurricane tracking threads, emergency response situations, recruiting, or ongoing investigation threads.

Users wouldn’t have to sift through threads to get to the updated information if OPs could be edited to provide the latest details.

Unlimited for everyone, except for Derka.

So people cannot go back and edit statements especially with regard to heated discussions.  The folks who like to play like they never said something or have been 'misquoted' are the reason there should be a time limit on editing.

One less headache for forum admins to monitor.

Sometimes spammers or hackers target established user accounts and instead of posting new content, go back through old posts that humans are not longer reading to post spam links for the search engines.

Sometimes angry people do the same thing, but instead of spam links, they edit their posts to insert scat porn.

Why a specific time limit?  Why not let people edit a post until there's another reply?

If you don't like the time limit, take your time to post.

Slorch is right, the reason is to prevent people from doing a "I never said that" or similar. You can always post again in a thread and correct or clarify what you meant.

Take your time and review your posts before they go up. Read them after you post. If you're having a hard time fixing it in 5 minutes delete it and start new.

Yea my shit is always fucked up because I post drunk half the time. Sorry guys

So we need a time limit because douchebags would go back and retract embarrassing statements they made?

I know I’m probably not going to persuade anyone on this but the ability to edit and update OPs and thread titles through ongoing events adds considerable value for the users and lurkers.

I’m not really concerned with the time limit on down-thread posts but the ability to edit thread titles with updated information like the score and period is really nice.  It’s one of the big gripes I had with the old site.

Imagine if you could click the football forum on gameday and instantly see all the current scores and time remaining through the thread titles.

Doesn't that sound nice?  You wouldn’t have to go to espn or have people in the thread ask “what’s the score?”

But we’re not going to do that because we gotta keep those fuckfaces from crawfishing on past posts they want to retract.

You need a time limit on posts for the very reasons that have been listed.  20-30 minutes is reasonable.  If you need a current score so badly then ESPN is the best place to get it.

Hey, no skin off my back.  Just trying to illustrate out how this place could be a little better for everyone if the powers that be made one little tweak.

I’m not making this suggestion for my benefit, I’m making it for the forum’s.

I did a baseball game thread for the SEC Championship Game... back when we could edit posts.

Please ignore Hugo Stiglitz. I don’t read his horrible political shit and I think all political bullshit should be excluded from rep stuff. As far as I can tell, that fucking rube and his clan bring nothing of value to the table.

I think 30 minutes is enough, but under that is unhelpful. This is from someone who pays attention to his posts.

I agree with Hugo.   The argument that people would go back and edit dumb/drunk/racist posts is not persuasive to me because a) in 99% of scenarios, the dumb/drunk/racist post is being responded to by somebody, which preserves the original quote  in the response  and b) Say I post something dumb/drunk/racist at 12:15 and you respond at 12:25 and point out my dumb/drunk/racist post. If I go and edit it at that point the edited time will be AFTER your post that called me out and everybody will see it.

That's quite a way to spend your lunch break.

Maybe retaining the ability to edit the original post in a new thread would be good, but put a standard time limit on editing responses?

Would it be possible for there to be an edit log? Like where you can see what the original version of the post was? There's been an uptick in folks expressing pretty racist views and then changing it on an edit. It'd be nice to be able to put their shit on blast.

  • 2 months later...

Yeah, increase this shit to at least 30 minutes. It's fucking ridiculous right now.

Maybe it's a benefit of being a donor and having a tree fiddy tag, but all my posts have a permanent edit button on them, just checked one I made in May and it has an edit button.  Membership has its privileges, apparently.

Ha! Just edited one from June so you are correct.

Stop being cheap you assholes. $42 a year is so expensive!

I just edited all my picks in gambooool.  95%.  Gonna go tout.  #winning

it's very noticeable that this is not blacklab's site. on shaggy if the people asked for something they got it from their benevolent dictator. now we have socks of socks of socks of  socks neg repping people 40 times in one day, and everyone here hates the edit function, but oh well, go fuck yourselves right? It now takes days/weeks to even get a response.

Yet...blacklab still helps manage the site and definitely is involved (actually imposed) the limit itself. Also who isn't banned and we've always had people get around IP bans to continue trolling. Stop acting like the internet has fundamentally changed because it fits some vendetta you have against me.

I've extended this invitation to you many times, but here it is again - if you don't like this site then feel free to start your own.

yeah i've heard you katy. seems like you doing a better job of moderating your own site and listening to its users would be a much more practical solution.

also, lol at "some vendetta i have against you". like you haven't gone out of your way innumerable times to give me reasons to have one.

i'm literally talking out of my ass? you literally don't know what that word means.

stop derkaing the thread.

Back on topic: Paid (donation or subs) users can edit whenever - non-paid (no ads ever, just signed up) are limited to 15 minutes as of now.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. I posted some pics last night, used the edit button once to add another pic and maybe 5 minutes later the edit button was gone.

I have checked everywhere in the settings and I changed it to 15 minutes this morning and tested it with a test user...I don't know if this just was a timing thing before the change went into effect, but can others please check?

So, back to relevant matters, I don't know if my double tree fiddy was accounted for and just in case it isn't, fix it. But don't give me any fucking agtag bullshit por favor. I'm not a heathen.
