The Goal

Thx.  No idea what's going on.  My guide has pregame until kickoff at 3:10.  Turn it on and I've missed the goal and the first ten mins.

I don't know. I'm kind of over the "golden generation" at this point. None of them can stay on the fucking field.

I'm cool with a tad less skill and more heart.  Served us well until the mid 2010's.

Cardosa is as good for his club as he is bad for the national team.

We seem to have several of those.

The first one was dumb but I can't say I'm surprised that this dogshit quickly gave up a 2nd one.

Yeah just make Hartford, Cincy, and Austin the rotation for national games going forward. Easy enough for internationals to get to and like 70% of the population like within 2 hour transit. The rest of the country can have the gold cup games and other unimportant matches.

Isn’t freeman Europe bound this summer?

I don't know and don't really care. I just want a back 4 that doesn't routinely embarass us.

Or that can recover/save us from other guys doing dumb shit.

Freeman does have a good chance to move, he has been playing great for Orlando.   Son of NFL WR Antonio Freeman

I don't think we're going to win the World Cup next year.

thankfully we auto-qualified

Brighter start to the second half. Tyler Adams being a big part of that.

Dude if you can't get that on frame just trap the ball.

Jfc Tillman.

Also - Luna is so fucking good. Needs to be a permanent fixture in our 26.

yeah this half is better than what i saw of the first half.

We’re so timid with the ball. We played like little kids passing the ball around in our defense third (and the 18!) and very little attack in the offensive third. Take a shot.

Good thing the USMNT has an autobid to the world cup. I'm not sure the 2017 USMNT is worse than the team is currently. Is 1 year enough time for this club to be world cup ready? idk

We played well enough for a result. Made one boneheaded mistake and let it beat us twice.

Really poor decision-making in front of goal and in the final 3rd for the last 25 mins or so. Tillman has to finish that header. That was a fucking sitter. Maybe one day he'll do something for us.

Overall we just seem to be lacking a mental edge. Not sure if that's something we can fix before 2026. Better players on the pitch should help regardless.

Tillman and Arfsten should have had second half goals. I would think that the USMNT xG > Turco xG.

The game should have ended 2 : 2 or 3 : 2.

PS- This team isn’t a “club”. It’s a team.

Gregg, is that you?

worth reading the entire thing.

Lando has a tendency to do this, and i’m torn, because part of me agrees with him, and the other part of me remembers LD refusing to just play full time for Everton in the EPL- something that would have been extremely important and influential for USMNT outfield players- all so that he could stay close to home, and close to his on-again-off-agin gf, and remain comfortable while playing in a farmer’s league. he has a point, but he’s a terrible messenger. he pussied out when he was playing, so it’s pretty much bullshit for him to be this mad at pulisic and co.

The guy who wasn’t selected for the 2014 World Cup because he took time off from the USMNT is preaching to kids that they don’t understand what it means to represent their country.

I went to X so you don’t have to:

Landon Donovan, who was a pundit for today’s Spain v Portugal game, took shots at USMNT players sitting this summer out

“This is what it means to represent your country. If you don’t want to take it seriously as a professional soccer player and someone who gets the opportunity to wear the jersey, then don’t come in,” Donovan said while looking at Portuguese players celebrating.

“[Cristiano Ronaldo] is 40 years old, he played a long season, he was out there grinding and got hurt in the process. And I can’t help but think about our guys on vacation not wanting to play in Gold Cup. It’s pissing me off.”

In the post-match interview, Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes was asked where players get the strength to play after a long season. He answered that playing for your country is a dream for every player and that’s it. Donovan loved that answer.

“I’m beating a dead horse but I don’t care. I care about this country and I care about our national team. We don’t have enough of that, what you just heard. We need more of that leading into the Gold Cup and World Cup,” Donovan said following Fernandes’ interview.

“Our fans have that passion. We read it every day on Twitter. We see it in the stands. They want to feel that and they want their players to feel that too. These guys [Portuguese players] feel it.”

I would say there is a difference between club and country for this. You could even argue that there is something good about working to improve the league in the US.

That said, like Nap pointed out, the dude took time off from the USMNT and it cost him his 2014 spot. So calling out guys for sitting …

Like most things, these 2 comparisons are not apples to apples. Landon is probably not the right person to present these messages, but he's not wrong.

Christian Pulisic is 26 years old and didn't even play as many minutes this year as some of the players playing in that final yesterday. He also will not be playing Champions League ball next year, so the likelihood of fatigue will be greatly diminished.

You can agree or disagree with Donovan taking his sabbatical, but he was 30+ years old at the time and had played in 3 World Cups, a Confederations Cup, and however many Gold Cups prior to the sabbatical. The major controversy around LD not being included on the squad was that Klismann actually brought him back for the Gold Cup and the last 2 qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico where he started and went 90 in both. He actually got an assist and goal against Mexico, which clinched our qualification for the World Cup. The fact that he didn't make the squad so we could bring Chris Wondolowski is still perplexing to me.

Seems like a lot of bitchassedness all the way around. Which reflects my general feeling on the team, they could use a bit more gumption.

landon’s spending his prime at home in LA didn’t improve the league, but he could have actually grown the sport in this country by starting every week in the epl.

This is not a good look from the Pulisics either. Dads need to shut up. Your son is 26 years old. He doesn't need daddy defending him on social media.

This is where I am. Few are looking good in this. If you want to take time off, fine. But taking shots by anyone really isn’t a good look.

This is by no means an attempt to apologize for Pulisic quitting the team this summer but 1 thing I have been thinking about.

Yes Ronaldo and all these other European players played just as many games and didn't blink at going straight to duty for their country.   The difference is they are playing meaningful games vs top teams.   TV and Social Media has spent the better part of a decade telling everyone how worthless the Gold Cup is, its B vs C teams, Concacaf sucks, etc...   Look at the crowds at US games, it is pathetic.   The Turkey match was solid but that is the exception.

US Soccer's promotion doesn't help, which is non-existent.   And instead of trying to grow the fan base they want $150 a ticket to see a gold cup match of the USMNT (C team) vs T&T.    Selling the broadcast to shitty fox didn't help either.  It sucks but you need ESPN to prime the masses and ESPN's coverage is 100x better than Fox.

Given we are going into a WC year with no qualifiers it sucks guys skipped out.   I have a feeling they view this summer's matches the same way 99% of the population does though, which is who cares...
