Went to La Fonda last night with my dad. Been to San Antonio about 75 times for work and ate at about 100 different places but that was one of the top 3 meals I’ve ever had in SA. What a gem.

going to la fonda for the 1st time this weekend. is the whole menu good or is there a specific item i need to get?

I've never had a bad item there.

"Unironically really fucking good pizza"

I can’t believe I’m about to do this. It’s not “really fucking good” but it (was) better than most other regional/national chains or buffets.  This is all tempered by the fact I haven’t been in one for maybe 20 years so ymmv.

Peter Piper used actual pizza ovens with rotating pizza stones that the pizzas sat on. Most chains use conveyer style ovens, the pizza goes through either in a pan or directly on the belt.  Either way: the surface area and direct heat in a real oven will crisp and blister the crust while conveyer pizza is going to be sort of limp and sometimes soggy like she always complains about. A quick google shows that at least some Piper locations use the real ovens. And they will absolutely give a nicer, crispier crust with more similarities to a NY pie, although the rest of the dough is a bit different.

I also seem to recall their sauce being tangier and less sweet than Pizza Hut or Dominoes or the like which I prefer. For toppings and cheese: who are we kidding it’s all the same shit. None of the places in this price point are using artisanal meat or fresh mozzarella or imported San Marzano tomatoes theu simmer in house.

At the buffet or carry out price point it was a notch above unless you have a local joint that does slices and uses a real oven. But you have to subject yourself to the arcade noise.

I stopped by today. Very casual place. Food was really good. Good people.

Headed to San Antonio for the Paul McCartney concert this Saturday night. Was trying to find a good place to eat that was very close to the Alamodome so I could shorten my uber needs. Currently booked at Anaqua Garden Bar. Any thoughts on this place? Other places close you would recommend instead?

Where are best puffy tacos? I’ve only had Henry’s before but want to branch out.

I used to love Jacala. I know that’s not any help but had to throw it out there.

We enjoy the Teka Molina on San Pedro

Puffy tacos: Taco house on San Pedro or viva on McCullough (used to be Elaine’s). The place that used to be Taco Riendo on San Pedro that was also an Elaines at one point had great puffies too.  I don’t know what it’s called now.

la fonda was great, beautiful patio and the weather was perfect. food was delicious and, damn, those are some giant portions. leftovers made for a great midnight snack.

Some sad news to report on the SA restaurant front:

Good Time Charlies on Broadway has apparently got the blues and closed. Sold to the Do-Seum, probably for parking.

Bee's on Lockhill-Selma has closed also. That one hurts. I've been eating there for 40+ years going back to when it was Senor Mike's.

I saw a sign on Bee's door the other day, but didn't stop to read it. I had a feeling that was it, though.

Now where will I do my Christmas shopping?

I hadn’t eaten at Bee’s in 10 years probably but I do remember liking it, that’s sad to hear. It kind of reminded me of Vegas cafe in harlingen.

You would think they could have stayed alive at least until Black Friday, right?

Mash’d at the rim also closed this week. Seeking other locations around town. RIM lease too expensive

The RIM is going to need to change their lease rates. That little block is now very empty with the bowling place, their sister restaurant and The Rustic all being closed.

With those rates I assume the only restaurants that can foot the bill will be big chains

The Rim might be my least favorite place in San Antonio. Car break-in central, the target there is the shittiest I’ve ever seen, the palladium is trash, and the whole area is always so crowded.

I avoid it like the plague when I'm in town. Traffic is always a hot mess.

The Meyers knew their daughter Leah was destined for baking when she was just 4 years old. One night, after waking to some commotion downstairs, they found her sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor, cracking eggs, and having the time of her life. When they asked her what she was doing, Leah cheerfully exclaimed, “Making cookies!”

Leah, who was born with Down syndrome, eventually channeled that early love of baking into her dream job. Now in her 20s, she serves as the creative force behind the Mermaid Café, a gluten-free bakery and coffee shop in San Antonio that employs people with disabilities. Leah’s parents, Karen Krumrey Meyer, BS ’93, and Drew Meyer, BS ’95, co-own the café, and they each play a pivotal role in helping Leah channel her culinary talent and generous spirit into a thriving family business.

I regularly drive near there, but rarely along that stretch of Blanco.  I'll have to swing by sometime.

Stopped off at Dae Gee on Blanco for some Korean food with the girlfriend the other day. Their Bibimbap was outstanding. Had their Korean pancakes as an appetizer and it was delicious. I also had some of their Japache which was excellent.

Great Korean food.

I'll get shot down for this, but I have never had a bad breakfast at Mi Tierra.  Menudo, caldo, carne guisada, eggs, enchiladas, tamales.  Very solid.
