January 13Jan 13 Popular Post 100% business above everything else. The guy is a real piece of work. He's known about the ill effects of his platform on Teen Girls, uses enragement for more engagement, has let accounts of the rich and famous get away with a lot more than regular accounts (take the Neymar incident from a few years ago). And now he's going on about the rules on Facebook and masculityity because clearly this is the model of masculinity if I ever saw one I could complain about the fact that when I browse FB I see more ads and posts from stupid accounts than any content from my friends and when I do see it, the content is like 2-3 days old. WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?! I think it's time we have a thread about this fucker and dump all over him and his shitty platform.
January 13Jan 13 How about the fact that Tiktok is getting banned because it's beating facebooks ass for ad dollars so he got congress to get rid of them. Thus the move towards the preferred wannabe alpha dumbshit image to satisfy and fit in with the new regime You guys may not like TikTok, but lots of people do. And its a great tool for information or misinformation or whatever you want it to be. As an app it blows away reels or yt shorts or whatever replaces it On January 18 we will be a little less free than we were before thanks to this dickhead.

It might sound paranoid at first, but this kind of shit is a big lunge of a step in that direction. If we continue in this direction (and we are), we're 100% going to end up with the same (or likely worse) kind of Internet restrictions that China has.

January 13Jan 13 I will say that what made tiktok special was that the algorithm felt more pure than the American apps. That's probably a terrible way to describe it but I think the For You Page was built with its major guiding principle being getting the user to spend as much time using the app and engaging the app, as opposed to the American apps which are designed to index you into categories so they can sell and influence you. Tiktok still sells and propagandizes, it just happens along the way while your using the app for hours every day. The American apps bleed you too quickly, and they aren't as addictive, so they aren't as successful. Lately Ive noticed way more propaganda on my FYP and especially in the comments. Feels like when 4chan got taken over by the Stormfront fags (which ultimately turned onto QAnon). The biggest stage goes to the highest bidder ultimately. Edited January 13Jan 13 by cmontexas

January 13Jan 13 I stopped using Facebook during Covid. I only go back to look at memories of certain days. I checked my feed and it was a ghost town. Do people still use it or did everyone move to Instagram? I've noticed a lot more Instagram type feeds that are shoehorned in.

Recently I was complaining about how much slop is served up by FB to a friend that uses FB pretty commonly (lots of posts, etc) - he said he doesn't have that. So I started a week or so of real engagement - Likes to posts, some quality comments, etc. It fixed my feed pretty quickly, with some good posts, etc. But once that week ended - my feed dropped off quickly - more slop. But if it needs me to constantly engage, that's not going to happen - I have a life, a job, I waste enough time here on Surly, I can't add FB to the mix. And frankly if they stop showing my friend's posts, they can't expect me to remain engaged with the platform. Ads are not going to keep me engaged.

I use a VPN and the adds content I'm sent are all from the middle east on Facebook. I still have a few friends that use it regularly but I struggle to find their content while filtering through all the spam. Most of the people I was connected with (actual life friends) use it as a political platform now. I switched to IG long ago, and mostly follow artist of all sorts I liked or found, travel type stuff and family. Then it started becoming an add scroll, with only the content of the most popular art and travel, lots of my non-politcal perhaps "edge content" (an art gallery a friend owns of small time alt artist primarily sculptures and painters was one example) got shut down for content. When it came back up it was never in my feed and neither were the artist aligned to it. I never did Ticktock personally nor Twitter. Just not my flavor. At this point I scroll a little IG but they've mostly shifted to Theads now which are difficult to filter through. Granted I'm get off my lawn age, but I work in tech and I'm nearly burned out on Social media. For the record I include LinkedIn as a part of that statement. It's become an influencer add space now too. Less about business and more about "inspiration" and "motivation". It's hard to find actual real discussion there too. I tilt more and more towards done with it all with each new iteration as they seem to just get worse than before. On the upside with Threads and all the other upgrades I don't get 15-20 follow requests from "single lonely women" per day in my in box on IG to follow me. Threads I have shit tons of those as I have yet to work through limiting followers by making it private and request only. Edited January 13Jan 13 by BurntEyes

It’s purely to stay minimally connected. Quit Facebook in 2016. Basically quit instagram in November. Also check it once a week and don’t even scroll. Just check messages and ignore them. Life is better for it
January 13Jan 13 Being "social media sober" is what the Gen Z/Gen A associates at work are calling it, I learned recently at a happy hour. These are the same people who coined the term "sober curious", so take that for what you will. Anyways, the younger associate class did a straw poll around the bar and I was shocked that like 1 in 10 uses facebook, most have and use instagram and snapchat, and that tiktok is considered "brain rot". The flex is to be off social media and "raw dog". Of course they could just have been trolling me and messing with me because I'm old.

January 13Jan 13 I can't believe someone is wringing his hands over the removal of one social media platform just because it's better designed to suck you in and waste your life away than the American versions of the same thing. They're all shit, and anyone bemoaning the loss of any social media platform should take a step back and think about whether or not they're a fully functioning human or just a mind-controlled zombie. To have the awareness that it's bad for you yet still complain that it's being taken away because it does a better job of capturing your attention than the alternatives is some next-level dumbassery.

I'm torn between two places here. In one place, I don't give a shit about TikTok, I had it installed on my phone for like less than 1 day on the recommendation of a friend. I found it annoying so I removed it. I legitimately do not understand how people get hooked on scrolling through short form video content all day. It's boring and intellectually numbing. The world, much less America, would be better off without it. In the other place, most of the reasons I've heard for banning it feel like we just wanted the largest [mis]information factory to be in American hands, not China's. Like yeah, I get it, that sounds good for us on it's face. TikTok's algorithm is certainly a damaging one from a standpoint of causing American brains to become as smooth as the mirror-polished surface of the plutonium core of a nuclear warhead, but you'll never convince me it's any more or less damaging than Facebook's, and we seem to just be content to watch as Zuckerfuck removes the last vestiges of information controls in an effort to vault Facebook into TikTok's position so the CIA or whoever the fuck can rot our brains in an equitable fashion. @cmontexas is kinda going crazy, I guess zoomer brains can't handle being without their apps, but it is what it is.

Meta knows this has been the trend, and probably has known for years but is deluding their investor groups, the few people dumb enough to stick around after Zuck in all his wisdom bet the farm on the metaverse. It reminds me of Yahoo in that there will always be that base of old people who are too ornery to use something else for their daily social media. I don't think Facebook will ever fully die for that reason, but it's never going to reclaim its status as the top dog. Instagram is kind of a different story, but the lack of competent leadership is reason enough to believe its days are numbered as well. One of the things I appreciated about Facebook in the early days was that they didn't try to overwhelm you with a bunch of banner ads, pop-ups, and everything else that Yahoo and MySpace had become kind of notorious for. I knew as soon as Facebook opened things up to the non-.edu masses it would eventually change, and sure enough the API and Cambridge Analytica bullshit happened and that was that. Enshittification is inevitable, but I believe it can be planned around and slowed down. There needs to be an easy way for groups to leave one platform behind and regroup elsewhere.
January 13Jan 13 I'm finally writing off facebook, I hung around longer than I should off but I liked some niche photography grounds, and I liked to be connected to a few people that lived near my elderly grandmother so I had a way to send them to check on her if need. Now that she has passed that knocks the use case down more. Otherwise the people I liked interacting with already had quit or are elsewhere. I still use instagram a little mostly because I follow a number of artists that I like sending their drawings to my wife. I gave up twitter in October except for my work posting and I just go to my profile to post and don't look at the feed. I do like BlueSky so far.(By nature I'm a poster, besides here there are a few other boards I'm on covering various subjects)
