We're going to be competing with OU for a coach.

I’ll take us ten quadrillion to one in that contest

This team has good players. Top to bottom probably a more talented team than last year.

Makes it all the more frustrating. Maybe they find a way to string together some wins when the schedule gets a tad easier in a few weeks. Won’t be holding my breath.

This is a much better roster than last year. But a worse product on the court. We definitely have the pieces to be good, but you can so clearly see how poorly they are coached. This should be a lock down defensive team.

Lunardi just said that an SEC team with 7-11 or even 6-12 record might get in. Can we find 5-6 more wins in the league?

Thank you, Jordan Pope. You were overwhelmingly the difference in winning and losing here tonight. What else is in the take-home lesson?

1. Shedrick tries but just isn't good enough to be an effective starter. Sadly, that has to be his role on this roster. Kent was a perimeter screener of no other discernible value tonight.

2. Johnson and Kaluma might need to split a bottle of NyQuil before our next tipoff. Too frantic under duress for much of the night. But at least both had flurries of key points.

3. This is one of the worst passing teams we've had. Stagnant halfcourt motion and unimaginative OOB sets only worsen the issue. All that, plus our bigs' difficulties scoring around the rim, adds up to sporadic flow and puts extra pressure on our guards to create decent shots for themselves.

Abridged version of the above: Against all odds, we survived. Really nice for the men and women both to win in Norman this year.

Nice win.  Per espn, Texas gonna be busy on Saturday… Texas travels to face fifth-ranked Florida on Saturday. Texas hosts South Carolina on Saturday.

Didn’t watch game, on too late, but surprised and pleased to see Texas won.  I didn’t see that coming.

I, on the other hand, did it the worst way possible.  I turned it on early in the second half with a 20-something point lead and promptly watched the offense grind to a halt while OU came back (and not in that playing awesome everything falling kind of way - they weren't particularly impressive either).  It was a staggering display of incompetent offense and lackluster defense.  But hey, we won.

Yep.

Pope, Kaluma, or Johnson creating their own shots. That's our offense.

Put the ball in Jordan's hands at the end of games, he's our closer and probably best all around player.

We need an administration change, but always a good night if we beat OU in Norman.

Balloon snake only had so much power

I went to bed a bit into the 2nd half because I had to get up at 5:30, so imagine my surprise at the final score.  This team is not good.

This reminded me of a football game from the Charlie Strong era where both teams look so terrible and incompetent that even a win feels kind of like a loss because you know the systemic issues run so deep they're not getting fixed until there's a new coach.

I must agree. This team can't practice on the defense because they are too busy figuring out the offense. Their system is to get the ball, shoot, and score. Let's go ISO or hero ball when the offense gets stagnant.

Hero ball!

Hero Ball! One of the commentators in a prior game said Texas plays "My Turn" ball. You shot it last time; it's my turn. Some of these guys can shoot the ball, even though it's a tough shot most of the time, because there's no offense to get them open. They can score but then give up points on the other end with no defense. I guess it's ok to give up shots as long as they are making shots, and that's on the coaches. We had eight assists; six were in the first half, and Arthur and Larry had 3.  Then two in the second half.  This shows you the team plays Hero ball and My Turn ball.  We won, though, so the coaches are good.

This has been the offense the entire time: create your own shot with no offense.

Just when you think OU can't possibly suck more cock they just keep on going.

They should reach out to this whore and make her the spokesperson

Don't forget our defense.  The "hope for help" defense.  Let your man drive past you and hope for help.  If you are a front side defender don't bother to help.  If you are a backside defender, go to the basket and make a half assed block attempt while leaving your man wide open for the three.

Same.

But you know what, if joy is gonna be hard to come by this season, then I'm gonna just smile at the fact that ou still hasn't beaten us in like 4 years.  Some of them were hurt last night, and that sits well with me, no matter the score.

Also, fuck ou.

Don't let the score fool you - OU hasn't beaten Texas in men's hoops in 1,414 days

This is my biggest frustration so far, and with zero rim protection, it absolutely can’t continue if there’s any hope of making the tourney. Teams that don’t drive to the basket hard against us right now have morons for coaches.

I don't mind the lack of rim protection nearly as much as the turnstile approach to perimeter defense that let's the opponent into the lane with ease.

Same. As much as Shedrick deserves criticism, our perimeter defense is fucking terrible and our bigs are being hung out to dry on many occasions. I don't ever remember seeing opposing teams be able to blow by guards at such a consistent rate.

It is crazy, because we should have an elite perimeter defensive team.

  • Tramon Mark was a key contributor in Houston's Final Four team and is supposed to be a lock down defender
  • Tre Johnson was supposed to be a plus defender and definitely has the length and aggressiveness to do the job
  • Julian Larry was 2x All-Defense at Indiana State
  • Jayson Kent was All-Defense at Indiana State
  • Weaver and Pope could also be good defenders as they have the necessary size and athleticism to lock people down

It seems like the staff has not put a priority on holding this group accountable. A hard ass, hard nosed coach would have this group humming on the defensive side.  They are constantly out of position and the defensive fundamentals as a whole seem to be missing. That is pure coaching as defensive lapses have to be checked immediately and consistently or the players, no matter how good they are, will not give their best effort on the defensive end.

What does that indicate when we have players "KNOWN" for playing defense? It suggests that defense is not a priority. The offense appears to be more valued, as players are rewarded and praised for scoring rather than for their defensive efforts. If a player is scoring, it seems they are not held accountable for repeatedly missing defensive assignments. So why play defense?

When players like Marks, Larry, Kent, or others play defense, and their teammates miss their defensive assignments, gaps are left in the defense, making it appear that everyone is out of position. If you are scoring, this seems acceptable because scoring is the system.  Defense may have been a priority at their previous schools.

A player is considered a "great player" if they can score, even if they lack defensive skills. Pope is an "EXCEPTIONAL SHOOTER," I thoroughly "ENJOY" watching him play. However, RT has acknowledged in an interview that Pope struggles with defense.

Don't get me wrong. While scoring is essential, I strongly believe in playing defense. It is challenging to stop the other team without making defense a priority. As the previous comment mentioned, "that is pure coaching."  Some may have just been recruited to score, but we must still play defense.
