February 13Feb 13 Quote What I talk to the DBs about all the time, but it’s really emphasized more, is you need to be really precise with your angles of entry and your coverage mechanics because if you’re at all out of position, these guys have such large catch radiuses, and they can use their body to box you out,” Schiano said. “So you’re really going to have to flip the hips and really be playing good football to be able to make a play on the ball.” https://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/2024/10/rutgers-plans-to-up-playing-time-for-deeper-group-of-defensive-backs.html

OnTexas mentioned that Terry Joseph contract ends at the end of the month. Hazelton coached the Nickel position this season before taking the Wake DC job. Think Orphey stays at CB, but this might not be the last coaching hire in the secondary. This may not be the last hire in the secondary, Texas had 3 coaches last year. February 13Feb 13 CJ Vogel Steve Sarkisian has made the hire of former Rutgers CB coach Mark Orphey to the staff as of Wednesday evening. What might that mean for the Longhorns moving forward other than a new body to coach defensive backs? Well, let's take a look. *** Coaching Resume Orphey has quickly ascended the coaching ranks and already in his tenure has experience in six bowl games, the FCS Playoffs and the College Football Playoff National Title game while at Alabama. Texas Southern (2011-2012): Cornerbacks coach South Carolina (2013-2016) Quality control assistant (2013) Defensive graduate assistant (2014-2016) Montana State (2017-2018): Secondary coach Utah State (2019-2020): Secondary coach Alabama (2021): Senior defensive analyst Rutgers (2022-2024): Cornerbacks coach Orphey, 35 years old, will join Texas as the youngest coach on the staff for Steve Sarkisian as well. *** Developmental History NFL Draft selections. Texas Southern CB Tray Walker – Drafted by Ravens in 4th round of 2015 NFL Draft (All-American) Rutgers CB Christian Braswell – Drafted by Jags in 6th round of 2022 NFL Draft Rutgers CB Max Melton – Drafted by Cardinals in 2nd round of 2024 NFL Draft All-Conference Players at South Carolina During his stint (2013–2016) DB Chris Lammons (2014) – All-SEC freshman team CB Al Harris Jr. (2014) – All-SEC freshman team DB Brison Williams (2014) – Preseason 3rd Team All-SEC Team CB Victor Hampton (2013) – A.P. Lead team with 9 PBU *** On the Recruiting Trail First and foremost, it is worth mentioning that Orphey played his high school ball at North Shore high school in Houston, a school which has become synonymous with producing defensive backs. Most recently, five-stars Denver Harris and Devin Sanchez, but also 2026 DB Chace Calicut which Texas is leading for at the moment. A quick rundown of the cycles he had to recruit while at Rutgers (hired March 14, 2022): 2023 Class 3-star Bo Macoe – Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola High ... 4th highest rated prospect in class Akron Transfer Charles Amankwaa ... Led Akron in INT and PBU in 2021 Northern Illinois Transfer Eric Rogers ... Started 6 games before transferring to Rutgers 2024 Class 3-star Kevin Levy – West Palm Beach (Fla.) Cardinal Newman High ... ran 10.6 100m, 5th highest rated prospect in class 2025 Class 4-star Michael Clayton – Warner Robins (Ga.) Northside High ... 2nd highest rated prospect in class (0.90) 3-star Renick Dorillas – Ramsay (NJ) Don Bosco Prep ... Penn State Transfer Cam Miller ... 40 games, 5 starts in three years at PSU Marshall Transfer Jacobie Henderson ... started 13 games in 2024 Florida and Georgia appear to be where Orphey has had high school recruiting success in the past. Of the 12 cornerback offers extended by Orphey in the 2025 class, five were in the state of Florida, three were in New Jersey, and one in each of Maryland, South Carolina and Georgia. Also, Orphey offered Graceson Littleton in February of 2024.

February 13Feb 13 They just had both of their coordinators get HC jobs. If you want to move to the NFL and have a shot at advancement, it's a good org to work for.
February 13Feb 13 1 minute ago, texifornia said: Working under Dan Campbell is a hell of a lot better for your career than the shitshow in Arlington. I mean, yes, that was clearly my reference in regards to the cowboys being a dumpster fire. That being said, having a new kid, being settled here, versus assumedly taking a pay cut seems like an odd choice. Maybe he wants to be on the road less with his baby girl, which makes sense.
February 13Feb 13 Why anyone would want to be a part of the Cowboys' organization in any capacity is beyond me. Intentional mediocrity. As long as they're on the front page and worth the most money, they don't give a shit.
February 13Feb 13 Popular Post I imagine this has more to do with work life balance. Choice probably doesn't need the money. With a new born, being on the road all the time, constantly having to recruit on the phone probably wears on you. Texas has gone from a coaching graveyard to a place where people come and can advance their careers, I'll take that compared to the alternative.

February 13Feb 13 This really doesn’t beat me up much between the constant fumbling since the UW game, Gibson over Durham, meh 25 class. Bad timing though. Would’ve been nice to stick a Houston rainmaker here and a technician for DBs

February 13Feb 13 While it’s a sign of a healthy program that coaches get promoted, there’s no other way to spin this: Choice leaving is a massive loss for national recruiting at the RB position, as well as recruiting in general in the southeast - especially metro Atlanta. Thankfully, Baker has ties there, but this one does hurt. My assumption is he (and his wife) want a lifestyle change given the young children - and that makes complete sense. Maybe that pays off in recruiting. I was one of those folks. I stand by what I said about Anwar, even a blind dog finds a bone sometimes. And I'm still from Missouri on this hire. But I also didn't like the Baker hire (or at least didn't understand it), so take that for what it's worth. But I just can't shake the feeling that we could have done better given who we are and what we have to offer. Sark / PK know better than me, though, and I'm happy to be wrong again. But I would like for us to poach a home run hire at some point, rather than raising someone from obscurity based on potential. Whoever we get to replace Choice will be a step down, but maybe we can get someone with a proven history and skins on the wall? It doesn't need to be a Frank Wilson or a Tony Alford, but someone at that level would be nice.
