I think Gideon won some national coach award for his special teams coaching, right?

My sweet Lord. Reading the thread since the Muschamp hiring is borderline exhausting. Some of the hawtest takes on this recruiting board, ever, on here between pages 45 and 48. I was quoting posts at

I think I'm less worried about the RB position search because there's a lot of good coaches out there. I don't expect a Choice 2.0, but as long as the new guy can get us back in it with these national guys, I think we'll all be happy campers.

It's also why I would like to see Sark branch out get a southeastern guy who already has connections. I can't imagine anyone on here would want Samples for more than anyone other than recruiting. We need a guy who can develop and has skins on the wall. I would love to land Cadillac Williams, but him being at his alma mater will be a tough task to pull off. But money talks...

Just go get another dog to lead that room. The RB coach is probably the least technical coaching role, it’s more about recruiting and instilling energy. I like the idea of bringing in another former NFL/College back. If the new guy can get the guys to hold on to the ball consistently, I’d consider it a win.

For whatever reason I thought he was H back and running backs. Disregard and thanks for the correction.

He actually spent 2024 with the Las Vegas Raiders. Pete didn’t retain him after he was hired. So I’m assuming he’s fair game. If he’s willing to return to the college game, I think he brings a lot of what made Coach Choice Special. Relatively young, SouthEast connections, recruited & coached some great backs, and brings a ton of energy.

I love having that type of competition in the room,” Hall said. “I’m big on having a unit where we can use multiple guys. I’m a running back by committee type guy.”

So for me, it’s huge for those guys to have a lot of differences, because they’re all different types of backs,” Hall said of his current group. “So I like that they’re all different. I like that I have a good group [and] deep group. And I’m very happy to have them.”

“I am excited to add Khenon to our staff,” Aranda said. “Khenon is an extremely talented young coach, who will have a great impact on our running backs room, while also helping our recruiting efforts. His energy, love for the game and all-around feel for the state of Texas has earned him a huge amount of respect as a recruiter. I have zero doubt that Khenon will make a great impact on our team, and I can’t wait to get started with him in Waco.”

This is a very in depth read on him. Worth giving sicem365 a click

He interviewed for their recruiting coordinator job in 2020 which says a lot

Quote

When they called, I was a little shocked," said the 35-year-old Hall, a 13-year coaching veteran who spent seven seasons at his alma mater, Illinois State. "I was kind of taken aback. At first, I was a little bit hesitant. Just being there and knowing what we had built. . . . Everybody asks me, 'Why did you leave?' One reason: Dave Aranda."

Hall, who actually interviewed with Aranda for Baylor's Director of Recruiting position in January 2020, said he couldn't pass up the opportunity to "learn and grow and be groomed by someone like that, someone of that character and that type of head coach."

/

Quote

Me and Coach Garin Justice (offensive line coach), we worked hand-in-hand," Khenon said. "The O-line coach, another sharp mind, he taught me a lot. I'm always trying to evolve and grow, so it was like another challenge for me. I don't have aspirations to be a coordinator, my aspirations are to be a head coach, because it's my way of just getting guys to play, bringing people together and leading. It was good for me just seeing it from a different lens."

At Baylor, Hall inherits a running backs room that includes 2022 Freshman All-American Richard Reese; Dominic Richardson, who rushed for over 1,000 yards in three seasons at Oklahoma State; and freshmen Bryson Washington and Dawson Pendergrass.

"It's a blank slate for me," Khenon said. "I'm a big earned, not given, guy. What's been done before I got here, I wasn't here. So, what you do from now until August, that's what matters. Great room, great kids. They're just business-like, very professional. You can tell that Coach Aranda has recruited the right guys."

True. If Choice can leave GT for a blue blood I would like to see Cadillac make that move. I would think we have so many more resources, plus he knows all the southeast and he's a likeable guy who gels with the kids. He's still young enough and he's not a bad RB coach. He would be my personal preference, but I trust Sark will find the guy. He's not a stupid guy (outside of that Stoops blunder). He knows how important recruiting that area is, plus he'll be all over Crowell and Cooper, as well as Osborne.

Scruggs just said on 247 that 3 names he heard from a source are Carlos Locklyn (Ohio State), Chris Gilbert and Kiel McDonald (RB coach for the Chargers, was at USC and Utah before that)

Don't know how you could hold Durham against him.  Durham wasn't coming here, his family made that clear.  If not LSU, he was going to OU.

Yes, we've seen creeping history revision as it pertains to Sarkisian's original staff and @Rimbo is full of shit with his inference here.

Just to reset, and folks can go find the original shit if they want to, this is what was rumored when Sarkisian was hired. The source who leaked this was at Bama, in now an HC elsewhere, was a controversial beloved player at Texas, at QB, has red hair, and is friends with some of our friends who cover Texas:

-Milwee, basically a mentee of Sarkisian and someone trusted completely with the QB room

-Keeping Drayton, in part to stabilize whatever value could be found on the current roster

-WR - Colbert, the former USC receiver who was viewed (maybe he still is?) as a good coach and recruiter at USC; also perhaps Holman Wiggins

-OL - Kyle Flood

-TE/STs - Jeff Banks

-DL - Bo Davis

-DE - ???

-LB - Mike Stoops

-CB - Terry Joseph

-S - Blake Gideon

-DC - Will Muschamp

Muschamp's wife shut down Muschamp to DC after Muschamp had verbally agreed to coming back. Gideon was his guy that he pushed for at the S spot.

Ultimately, the WR coaching stuff was conjecture. Sarkisian wasn't interested in Wiggins, as it turned out.

Donor revolt led to Stoops not getting the LB gig.

The hires people had concerns over were keeping the WR coach, Joseph, and Milwee. There weren't many people complaining about Gideon outside of his time here as a player and his minimal experience.

This was from Jan 4 after Sark was hired. All the names were original names that were mentioned by 995ers at the time.

For some reason Gideon was considered for the TE spot, I think because he was only a S/T coordinator or something.

Glad you added that,  I thought he was going for Adam Dunn.

OB with a few notes:

* The loss of running backs coach Tashard Choice to the Detroit Lions is considered a significant blow behind the scenes. Not only was Choice viewed as an excellent coach and team leader, but he was also a key recruiter, especially in Georgia. That state was successfully navigated by Choice during recruiting, which makes replacing him difficult, though not impossible, according to my sources.

* One NFL source told me that Choice wanted a larger role in game planning and putting together the offense. Additionally, he desired to work with the offensive line, an opportunity he will have in Detroit.

* Texas wanted Choice to remain on staff, but Detroit was determined to hire him.

How much?

Detroit paid Choice’s buyout of $850,000 to hire him.

* I was informed that Sarkisian is currently assembling a list of candidates. As of Thursday, it was too early to determine which coaches Sarkisian will target.

* However, I have not yet heard either former Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton or Oregon running backs coach Ra’Shad Samples heavily mentioned as candidates. When the Dallas Cowboys pursued Choice a few weeks ago, neither was viewed as a frontrunner for the role.

* Hopefully, for Texas fans, Sarkisian has the same success replacing Choice as he did in finding Blake Gideon’s replacement.

I was told Mark Orphey interviewed in Austin on Monday and immediately emerged as Sarkisian’s top choice. Orphey aced the interview, and his ability to recruit in Houston was a huge selling point.

* According to my sources, it is unclear if Orphey will coach safeties or cornerbacks at Texas. I was told Orphey can coach both positions. However, Sarkisian’s primary goal was to hire Orphey, and he will eventually determine which positions Terry Joseph and Orphey will coach after securing his commitment.

Florida On3 site reporting Will Harris is taking a job at Miami. Noting because he was brought up a bunch during our DB coaching search.

Why the hell did Detroit pay about $300k-400k above slot for Choice? Their RB’s are already damn good. It’s not like they’re asking Choice to come in and coach up the Giants RB Room.

Justin Wells mentioned that Oregon is considering moving Samples to WR coach and hiring Hall (Baylor RBs coach)

Jk, I like the idea of the Chargers guy. Baker and Jackson have worked out

Remember when he was asked about the Horns potentially targeting rbs in the transfer portal and he said "Nah, Choice good"?

That got under my skin a little and I took some heat a couple weeks back when I suggested he may have been nudged to the door. Understandably, since hes a respected assistant who was a key factor in several recruitments at different positions. He will be a loss. But I'm excited to see some new blood in the offensive coaching room
