February 17Feb 17 Damn, I was intrigued by Hall. I don't know shit about fuck, but he seemed like he would've been a good fit and had some good insider relationships already formed for short and long term recruiting.

Correct. It would be boiled Roman Numerals.

The non traditional hiring of dudes (Baker, Jackson) who your tree has no crossover with who are totally our of left field looks great until you swing and miss (Herb Hand, Sterling Gilbert, Joe Wickline, Las Koenning, Charlie Williams, Andre Coleman, Jay Valai) at which point you look like a fucking idiot even if you move from them on after one year. Glad it's worked for Sark so far, and the major difference is that he isn't hiring some old fuck whose on the back half of his career. He's absolutely earned some rope, but I'm still scarred from the Strong and Herman years. Edited February 17Feb 17 by NoName

February 17Feb 17 Bobby followed up with a comment that Curtis Luper is another name to watch. Sounds like they think Luper, McKenzie and Barthel from Nebraska might be the three finalists.

February 17Feb 17 Luper is 59, Bethel and McKenzie are both 40ish. Also, "[McKenzie] and his wife, Amber, have two sons – Storm and Bolt."

February 17Feb 17 A lot of this has already been talked about in this thread but if those are the narrowed names: Luper is older but was at TCU for awhile (2013-2019) and had at least a larger title (co-offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator). He's also got some recruiting skins on the wall at Auburn and Ok State (per his Mizzou bio). McKenzie continues to hit the Georgia recruiting area base. Barthel is a bit different with the Big Ten footprint but has the NFL coaching experience. Also seems to be a do more with less developer at the stops he's been at? Maybe?

February 17Feb 17 Author Luper with the UT logo is very interesting. The dude has been recruiting Texas for ages and has some very strong connections in DFW. He is a favorite of many high school coaches and has coached a good number of guys who are on currently on staff at some big time schools. I don't know anyone who knows him that doesn't like him. He served in a "High School Relations" kind of role while he was RB coach at TCU and organized all of their big camp stuff. I bet that he's a Gary Patterson recommendation. February 17Feb 17 Curtis Luper, geez. That dude is old, but he can coach and recruit. He had one of the weirdest college playing careers of all time. Like all, all time.

"He was recruited to play at Oklahoma State where he played from 1984–1987 and was part of three bowl teams (playing behind future Hall-of-Fame running backs Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders). Luper left school to serve as an air traffic controller for the United States Army, before completing his playing eligibility at Stephen F. Austin State University where he led the Lumberjacks in rushing and scoring as a second-team All-Southland Conference running back in 1993." Like Scott Bakula in Necessary Roughness.

February 17Feb 17 Damn Quote Luper and his wife, Tanya, were married in July 2022. They are the parents of A'rielle, Cameron, Chancellor (a former Mizzou wide receiver), Simara, Charitie (a member of the Louisville volleyball program), Xavier, Cheyenne and Ayden. Could definitely use a pay boost.

February 17Feb 17 And for some reason, his Wiki bio doesn’t include an All America and Doak Walker finalist. https://mutigers.com/sports/football/roster/cody-schrader/17008 I know Schrader had some small school skins on his wall when he transferred to Mizzou, I suspect no one expected him to become as productive as he was.

Yeah, his wiki page is pretty messed up. I know he is known as a recruiter, but then they pretty much only mention guys and girls he recruited while at SFA.

February 17Feb 17 I know this place can go off the rails worse than Charlie Sheen on a Tuesday in Palmdale, but I absolutely did not have a Katie Hnida reference on my offseason bingo card. When I think of Katie Hnida, I’m reminded that she’s only the second most annoying kicker to come out of Colorado, right behind that douche canoe that kicked barefoot for the Buffs in 99-00-ish.
