So he's been on staffs with Choate, Saban, and Schiano and has Houston/Texas ties. Not going to act like this is some no-doubter but seems like it can work just fine to me.

RB benefits the most from a running threat at QB

Will Howard threw for 500+ more yards, had more passing TDs, more running TDs, fewer picks, was sacked 17 fewer times and won a national championship. It's not debatable at all.

Gibson right now is a net negative on the field. If Baxter is really looking at midseason then 100% need a portal RB.

Wisner is Hodges Mitchel.  He's a serviceable back....he aint no Doak finalist.

Star freshmen are few and far between and becoming more common, But dismissing them because they don’t become stars their first year of playing college ball is surly tradition and short minded.

Kinda like how Wisner became the number 1 back.  I like the cut of your jib.

Yep.  Cedric Benson averaged about 4.4 per carry when Simms, Applewhite, Mock were his QBs to over 5.5 per carry with VY.

It is a bit different by position. Rb is one of the few that you usually see those flashes, if they are going to be great. That does not mean a freshman that looked like a freshman cannot improve. It just means the ceiling might not be 1st team All-conference/All-American type player or the odds of that happening are long. They can still be a serviceable player. Baxter's health being a legitimate concern and a room that looks more solid than dynamic at this point, I can definitely see why people would argue for the need for a portal RB. Perhaps one of the freshmen will show those flashes with the football in their hands in practice and quell some worries. The one concern from last year is blocking from that group. It was generally poor last year. Baxter was kind of unicorn in that area as freshman. Not sure you can count on a freshman blocking in year 1, even if Baxter proved it is possible.

There are a few things that can change the Run game.

1. Mobile Qb

2. Pocket presence. Not to get into a Quinn debate, but I think Manning can be better in the pocket. Keep Texas out of those 2nd and 15 situations, that are drive killers.

3. The Deep ball. Manning showed himself to be much more of gun slinger. That is a bit of double-edged sword, but I think safeties will be less aggressive firing downhill with Manning taking snaps.

3. Maybe Texas gets a better blocking out of a TE

4. With Conner and Majors out, there is possibility we finally see "Big Humans" we have been promised. More downhill OL, instead of OZ centric.

For sure, my opinion is he’s flashed enough to deserve some grace of getting better. I just think it’s funny to dismiss him as a young player that should be passed up cause he wasn’t a star his first year. We should always be good with today’s rules at every position anyway with portal and recruiting. Hopefully he develops into something.

I’m not saying he should be kicked off the team. I’m saying that going to Ohio State game one with the same RB room as the end of 2024, but minus Blue (and plus two true freshmen) probably isn’t a great idea.

Look, we all read between the lines of your post. I’m not saying I agree with executing him on the 50 yard line, but…

Recall this past year we played 10 games (and almost 11) after "midseason".

Coupling recovering from major injury with conditioning...having a "fresh" back ready to go for the second half of the season and the post-season is ideal.

I meant Gibson with a year of weight room and conditioning with added experience could be a star this year. We’ll see

The guy is a young hustler. He paid his way through the first part of his college while playing football. He was homeless for part of high school, in fucking Compton. He’s spent his last few years grinding as a talent and recruiting analyst which is low pay, long hours thankless shit.

An added hand holder in the RB room and with recruits on Gameday and visit days seems worthwhile.

So no relation to the Dallas Garretts.  Got it.

Southern California has been good to us for running backs. Maybe he has a decent network

True freshman, high pedigree, fills a very specific role in the room...can improve for sure but net negative?

Agree that “net negative” is a bit harsh for a true freshman, but your stat source sucks. 3 fumbles on 81 touches is problematic.

Listen, I took posting 101 my freshman year of college and advanced posting my second year, plus I have over 20 years of experience. If there is one thing that I have learned, it is to immediately jump in balls-deep with a cat pic and a hot take.

He became unplayable due to fumbling and nonexistent pass blocking.

Hey I like the guy and I'm pulling for him. But if it's just Wisner, Gibson, and two true freshmen to start the year, then my only point was that I would want a portal add there.

Edit: But, this was all based on an Anwar Richardson report that Baxter is aiming for midseason. Which means he'll probably be 100% in June.

Realllly bad fumble luck to lose 5/7 fumbles from those two but 1/12 for bilden and Ewers

6%of fumbles lost by the rest of the team TOTAL, minus Sorrell (1/15)

71% of fumbles lost by Blue and Gibson

Fumble luck is random but that's super super super bad luck for both of them.

I just think people have way way way too high of an expectation for true freshman, especially after seeing Baxter last year.

I see what you are saying but net negative is way too strong.

It has nothing to do with program insights, it's just a complete fucking stupid question. Who gives a shit about value added from an assistant RB coach to Chad Scott brings. Nobody fucking ever ask that question about analyst hired, personnel, etc.

I kind of understand where @BurntOrange&White is coming from, the op’s question did seem to have a critical connotation to it. Although BOW didn’t have to be such a dick about it lol.  But all of the support staff guys that we’ve had under Sark have been excellent. Two are now full time NFL assistant coaches, and the rest have either been promoted in house or are currently full time coaches on other staffs. You want guys that are hungry and eager to progress in their careers working under your full time assistants.

I think that ideally you want unproven guys with good personality traits and high energy as assistant position coaches and you want your analysts to be the guys that have been around the block a few times. I know that it’s already been noted but the recruiting and scouting army that Sark has put together is fucking impressive. We are the leading the pack of the entire damn sport. So in that regard, it’s silly to be critical about anything that we are doing right now support staff wise.
