So he's been on staffs with Choate, Saban, and Schiano and has Houston/Texas ties. Not going to act like this is some no-doubter but seems like it can work just fine to me.

He left a head coaching job at Buffalo (not sure what is expected at Buffalo; he was 14-23 through 3 years and may have been a bad year away from being shown the door) to be the Bama DB coach.

Pete Nakos (On3) on the names he is hearing:

Spoiler

Texas safeties coach and pass game coordinator Terry Joseph is headed to the New Orleans Saints, sources told On3 on Monday morning. It marks his first NFL job and a return to New Orleans.

Joseph’s departure marks another opening on Steve Sarkisian’s staff. Safeties coach Blake Gideon recently took the Georgia Tech defensive coordinator job and Tashard Choice is the new running backs coach for the Detroit Lions.

Joseph was with Texas for four seasons. Longhorns’ cornerback Jahdae Barron won the Jim Thorpe Award in 2024, going to the top defensive back in college football. Barron posted five interceptions and 67 tackles as the Longhorns’ secondary allowed 173.8 yards per game. Texas posted 22 interceptions in 2024 and ranked No. 3 in points allowed per game at 15.31.

Speaking with sources throughout Monday, On3 has compiled a list of names to know in this search. We’re not tabbing them as favorites or the top targets, but as names that are starting to gain traction in the search.

Here’s the breakdown:

Arizona defensive backs coach Duane Akina
Back with the Wildcats for a second stint after spending 1987 to 2000 at Arizona. During his first stint, Duane Akina was the secondary coach at Arizona, helping guide the Wildcats’ “Desert Swarm” defensive attack, one of the nation’s most aggressive and productive groups. He helped develop Darryll Lewis, the 1990 Jim Thorpe Award winner, and Chris McAlister, a finalist for the Thorpe Award. After his first stint at Arizona, he was on Mack Brown’s staff at Texas from 2001 to 2013 as defensive backs coach and assistant head coach. Akina consistently led one of the top secondaries in the nation.

Alabama defensive backs coach Mo Linguist
Mo Linguist joined Kalen DeBoer’s first staff at Alabama last offseason after three years as the head coach at Buffalo. The Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator, Alabama’s 2024 defense ranked among the top 20 in the nation in several categories: interceptions (7th), scoring defense (10th) and passing yards allowed (19th). A former Texas A&M, Minnesota and Iowa State assistant, Linguist led the recruitment to land 2025 five-star cornerback Dijon Lee.

Pitt safeties coach Cory Sanders
Cory Sanders was in the mix when Texas was hiring Gideon’s replacement. He just wrapped up his seventh season with the Panthers, overseeing a group that included Donovan McMillion who earned All-ACC second-team honors after posting 108 tackles, seven pass breakups and an interception. Sanders was promoted to assistant head coach, filling the void left by former defensive line coach Charlie Partridge departing for the NFL, before the 2024 season. Pitt has produced several NFL draft picks from its secondary recently, including Damar Hamlin, Brandon Hill and Erick Hallett.

OK.  So we know it won't be any of those dudes.

He's old, but should be a good match with Orphey. It'll give some of the BMDs an "I'm still relevant" boner, which is nice.

I guess with the new coaching rules, if they wanted they could just let Akina coach ball and Orphey could recruit the secondary and get another assistant (Clark?) on the road?

What in the actual fuck. No. Fuck no.

I guess we are not planning on any zone defense because god help us if Akina tried to teach our corners anything other than man.

Texas had 3 coaches in the secondary last year. I don’t remember Hazelton ever hitting the road. This may make sense if you view it in that light. Sark had hired the second of 3 secondary coaches. The next one will have more recruiting chops. That is all I got

Someone in the know have any idea to what degree Sark was influenced by money/powers that be on this hire?  Seems atypical for him based on previous hires.

I mean... The dude can coach. If you want to maximize a two year championship window and mentor our young CB coach it's not a terrible hire.

Nansen tried to bring him with him last year so based on that and their relationship it doesn't feel surprising.

I played on an IM football team with him a couple of times. I don’t recall ever speaking to him the whole time.  But, I seem to recall him not appreciating me showing up to our games drunk.

Come on, at least Park Gothic is trolling.

It's when Bevo shows up and wants to talk about the time he and Akina, who used to be drinking buddies don'tyaknow, ended up half naked on someone's farm wrestling pigs, and Bevo knew then seeing how Akina kept that pig in front of him that he wasn an elite DB coach, and he should be welcome back in Texas at any time becuase Bevo believes in Affirmative Action for olds like himself.

lol.

We will spend the next week talking about Jerry Gray and Duane Akina before Sarkisian finalizes the hire of Alcorn State's DB coach out of nowhere.

Akina is a hilarious surprise. Very unlike Sark. I guess Nansen must have been a big advocate?

Don't forget Sark hired Akina as an analyst last year but he got a DC role at Arizona and immediately went back

True story. Also you’re not laughing you’re crying. Like everyone else under the age of 60

Reunited and it feels so good.

This is the funniest hire since the Mike Stopps meltdown, but in a much different way. I’m trying to think of an analogy, but can’t. Too damn funny but a little disappointed that Jerry Gray isn’t involved.

Get on their ass, Duane! Bring back DBU and another title!

He never could coach zone worth a shit. And our pass defense under him typically the sum was not as good as the parts.  Hate this hire.

Akina is a decent hire, but we probably could have done better. It is great to have a guy who can speak to the great DB history of Texas on staff though. We lost that with Gideon, now, we have the guy who helped coach him up.
