It's pretty clear you don't know who Larry Johnson is. 16 defensive players of the year or defensive linemen of the year in the last 25 years in the b10 is outstanding. He's an incredible position coach and didn't have to

Akina is an incredible coach historically. He just isn't Larry Johnson.

So he's been on staffs with Choate, Saban, and Schiano and has Houston/Texas ties. Not going to act like this is some no-doubter but seems like it can work just fine to me.

My sweet Lord. Reading the thread since the Muschamp hiring is borderline exhausting. Some of the hawtest takes on this recruiting board, ever, on here between pages 45 and 48. I was quoting posts at

  • This is a Nansen hire. He was behind the surge last year to bring him on as an analyst. The plan to hire him has been in place for a while, and if Blake would have stayed and Terry still left they wou

The hire is fine in the context of “Terry Joseph left and we replaced him”.  Good bridge for the new CB coach to grow into the role and cut his teeth recruiting in the SEC. Prior relationship with Nansen whose track record to date at Texas is really good. Won’t leave for another job so some stability on staff during the upcoming Arch era.

Yeah, Akina is old and is going to coach ball rather than recruit. I’m sure there was a better hire out there somewhere, but maybe Sark wanted to move on from the offseason ASAP. There’s probably some benefit to shutting down the carousel.

Man please , ain’t nobody discrediting  Johnson, but I’m giving Akina his flowers.

just at Texas Akina had

5 1st round draft picks

2 Thorpe award winners

14 first team DBs (in a pass happy big 12)

and 11 active DB’s just from Texas in the NFL (mind you he left Texas in 2013

And that was just at Texas. Arizona could’ve possibly been his best coaching job considering all factors

According to Grok AI, Larry Johnson has had approximately 23 players drafted by the NFL.

According to Grok AI, Duane Akina has had at least 25 players drafted by the NFL, with estimates ranging up to 33 based on his full career impact across Arizona, Texas, and Stanford.

Estimates is the best AI can do? Couldn't any human with wikipedia figure out the real answer in less than 5 minutes

Isn't Larry Johnson at Pedo like 73 or something? He seems to be doing fine. And Akina has put something like 30-40 DB'S in the league between Texas, Stanford, and Arizona with 4 Thorpe award winners. I'm pretty he doesn't have dementia and can remember how to coach.

This isn't being snarky to you, just saying I think the dude can still coach.

Yeah he's 73...but...he moved on about 10 years ago

He has had some issues at OSU with Knowles. The story from OSU was Knowles and Johnson finally went to the mat over DL coaching/technique. Jim wanted it taught a different way. Jim ended up winning. The rest is history.

This is silly argument. Secondary will generally have 5 on the field vs 4 for a DL. The better argument is probably Akina vs Corey Raymond.

Being able to have a million coaches and Texan actuelly hiring a million makes it way easier age wise and recruiting wise for him.

If PK and Nansen are on the same page on it and sold Sark then that's good, especially if you are hiring this late into things.

"Are you from Texas? Yea, y’all stole one, y’all stole one. Coach (LaAllen) Clark, that’s my guy. He came in with a chip on his shoulder, all the ranks he’s been through coaching on the college ranks. He knows a lot. You guys are getting one of the best coaches. I mean he was under Coach (Larry Johnson) so he knows ball. He’s going to go there and contribute big time. He’s very energetic. He’s young but he knows the game from my eyes in a way. That’s my guy, and I still talk to him to this day. I’m sending all the prayers and just blessings over to him and his room. I’m excited to see what he does and I’ll have to check it out some time."

Sorry I actually meant Ohio State. I have no idea why Pedo came to mind.

Regardless, Akina has sent 41 DBs to the NFL. I'm not quite sure why anyone would think a guy who has sent that many, let alone his guys who have won the Thorpe, would be a "meh" hire?

It's not about nostalgia, it's about knowledge; that's what Akina brings. He's still on the recruiting trail. It's crazy that people still question Sark's hires.

I remember whe he played. Wasn't he a 1st rd pick? That school is simply ahead everyone else in that regard. I remember as a kid Kijana Carter.

Can’t transfer to another SEC school in spring window.

Saints is building a strong recruiting presence in La. 😂

Kellen More is fully embracing the college game to with his defensive staff. Bo Davis, Terry Joseph, and the just hired Peter Sirmon from Cal. Should be interesting.

SEC would fold if a player transferred and sued them.

Yeah, I don't think that rule will hold up.

I was under the impression that there were no more rules, only toothless guidelines?

Today I learned recruits steer clear of old coaches. It’s good to finally get an explanation of why Nick Saban didn’t have any success at Alabama.

Even Mack and his old man gut were still pulling five stars at UNC.

I’ve never liked the Joseph hire that’s all I’m saying.   I think he’s been a recruiter more than a coach at his previous stops and it was a bit of a comfort hire.  I think he has done less over the long haul than the other defense staff that has stayed on. He’s the weakest link on the top defense in CFB. He was gifted a tremendous athlete and motivated DB in Barron. It would be tragic if he had fucked that up.  But that’s like saying that the OSU secondary coach is the best ever because Downs is a freak.
