He was my coach in high school for a bit.  He was a bit ahead of his time trying to run the spread offense we see everywhere now in 1995.  Then he had sex with a student and got fired.

Apparently the spread offense has its limits.

So he's been on staffs with Choate, Saban, and Schiano and has Houston/Texas ties. Not going to act like this is some no-doubter but seems like it can work just fine to me.

Guys, hear me out. For the newly opened DBs coach, we get Jimmy Lake or Michael Huff. Or, better yet, Corey Raymond. Let’s also not forget Duane Akina or Muschamp.

My favorite excuse in a small town is “my kid doesn’t play because his last name isn’t x, y or z”.  No, little Johnny doesn’t play because he drops half his passes in practice.

His dad was our OC my soph and jr years in high school in the mid 80s.  One day Bill Boy rolled up to visit one of our practices in a Cadillac convertible with the top down and his wife/girlfriend was wearing a big fur coat when it was about 80 degrees.  We were all like, "what the hell is going on here?"

When I was in school, Bill Boy could often be spotted on the west campus bar scene. One night he was wearing a t-shirt with a large “ME” on top and a very small “team” beneath it.

"Bill Boy" must have been the 80s redneck equivalent of naming your kid "Lil'Jordan"

Switzer landed in a helicopter at our practice field wearing the same shit but it was Houston so it was hotter and more humid.

IT

We’re about to throw you for a loop on the DB search.

In checking with my guy in the Florida market, IT does not believe Will Harris will be the new DB coach. In addition, it sounds like Doug Belk is content at USC, per someone in that market. And it’s not going to be Jimmy Lake, that never really made sense.

When we ask around we’re not even sure this is a search for a safeties coach. It could very well be that Texas will simply hire the best DB coach it can find. The Horns have that ability due to Terry Joseph’s prior experience coaching the position. Before Texas, he was best known for coaching safeties at Notre Dame where he recruited and coached Kyle Hamilton. When he was hired at Texas, many had hoped he would be the safeties coach rather than corners.

If Texas does go that route, beats the heck out of me who they’re targeting. Demetrice Martin at UCLA? That’s a pure guess based on his track record for recruiting out west and working with Sark at Washington way back when.

Shocker, the 9.95ers didn't have a bead on the DB coaching search.

It never made sense to search for a safeties coach given that Joseph is naturally that guy. Getting an elite corners coach will be the better move imo

I wonder if we'll see a different philosophy regarding the Star position. Personnel wise I think its an interesting fit.

We bring back 3 starting safeties, a CB and last year's Star. Barron moved from Star to CB his contract year and it worked out amazingly. Im wondering if Guilbeau plays CB next year (he's kinda slow though) and McDonald moves down to Star, and plays it as more a SS/LB hybrid instead of a slot corner; with Williams and Taafe at the two safety positions.

Probably a discussion for the DB thread or elsewhere, but it relates to the Coaching staff thread inasmuch it will be interesting to see what school the new coach subscribes.

Jeff Howe had some interesting suggestions on OTF for the hole left by Gideon:

1.) Jeff Hayward - Oregon State Defensive Coordinator. Coached DBs with Sark at multiple stops.

2.) Carl Scott - Seattle Seahawks DB Coach. Coached DBs with Sark at Alabama.

3.) Ephraim Banda - Cleveland Browns Safeties Coach. GA under Duane Akina. From San Antonio, TX.

Keith Hayward. And he resigned as DC to spend more time with family. Doesn't seem realistic.

Karl Scott would be cool. He coached with Sark at Bama and was a Pete Carroll hire in Seattle. Have to wonder if he likes the NFL better but otherwise makes a lot of sense.

Idk anything about Banda but don't see any connection other than being from San Antonio and a grad assistant in the Mack era

Absolutely no connection and out of left field would be Al Harris. Tons of NFL experience one year at FAU and has pretty strong Florida connections.

that would be out of left field.  he's trying to become a DC in the league.  he's not going to college to coach corners.

It'll end up being a 35-yo NFL quality control guy who played somewhere like Savannah State and had an unremarkable 8-year NFL career. And he'll be awesome.

According to Anwar’s sources, Tyrone Swoopes will start against Notre Dame.

If it is Micken's, ND fans will be irate.  Many thought he should have gotten the DC job when Golden left.

I want it to be him just for the laughs.

Can anyone find the current salaries of the above mentioned coaches?

Micken’s would be a great hire, just don’t know if he will make a lateral move. He was expecting DC interest this year and is close to Marcus Freeman.

Orphey was Jeff Choate's DB coach at Montana State, which is a connection I found interesting outside of him being a Houston area guy.

I'm probably being pessimistic, but I doubt we pull Mickens from ND. They seem to really like him and can pay.

And do we really want Orphey from Rutgers? The Rutgers defense was in the bottom half of FBS and their passing defense was equally uninspiring. I don't have any greater context or insight than that, but I just don't see why we would want the guy. I appreciate the Choate connection point out by @Hookem2147, but Choate doesn't work here anymore. I just don't see compelling reasons for hiring the guy, although I'm more than happy to be set straight.

That makes me think that out of the three guys listed by Anwar (who probably knows less than dick), Sanders seems the most likely. Narduzzi knows ball and coaches a good defense, and this guy has moved up the ranks. And I don't think Pitt has enough money to spend keeping him even if they like the guy. So he could be a real possibility. All of that being said - I don't see this guy having any connection to Texas, the South, or even the NFL. I would expect one of those three things in whoever we hire, for recruiting purposes if nothing else.

So I come back around to Anwar being dumb as dirt and full of shit to boot. I doubt any of these three are really on our short list. At best, Mickens is looking for a raise and Sanders is being kept warm as an emergency option.

Wow, if my math is correct, Mickens was on staff at ND when he was in the 8th grade.

24 years as the ND cornerbacks coach under multiple head coaches is impressive.  Gotta be some kind of record.

As is being on staff at Notre Dame nine years before being drafted into the NFL.

My thought is that Anwar is as clueless as ever.

Burton gave an update this morning that said that there wasn't a lot of news out of the football office regarding who Sarkisian was talking to, but he would not be surprised by another NFL hire. There are two guys with the ability to directly access Sarkisian and other staff members. Neither of those guys seem to have a feel for where this is going. The Mickens information is being disseminated from the same source to multiple reporters, clearly. Who knows how credible the source is? Is it an agent? Who else gains from that shit getting out?
