April 10Apr 10 OTF - Bobby: The final sentence, "Texas is expected to be highly and selectively aggressive in the portal," has me gruntled. Quote Thursday The Longhorns are back on the practice field today. Some news and notes based on what we’ve heard: - Even though Ryan Wingo and DeAndre Moore have been sidelined for spring, don’t think they’re taking camp off. I’m told the duo, along with Manny Muhammad, have been working overtime watching film. Muhammad is somewhat famous for how much film he takes in. Moore and Wingo seem to be doing the same this off-season, including all three watching film together to give each other a view of what the two sides of the ball are seeing and reacting to. - One of the early surprises of spring had been Zina Umeozulu. As we reported on Tuesday, Zina suffered a thumb injury that required slight surgery. He’s back at practice now. Despite the injury and despite the high-level of talent at the edge position, Zina could be one of the breakout players of the defense in 2025. - True freshmen Kade Phillips and Graceson Littleton continue to impress in the secondary. Yet it’s too early to tell if they’re going to find their way into the lineup and/or rotation. I was told there’s a lot of very talented players in the Texas secondary. It’s all about finding the right mix and the ones who play together. - Cornerback Warren Roberson was also singled out as having an improved spring. Roberson appears more “dialed in”. - I’m told that running back Christian Clark, who Sark spoke highly of on Tuesday during the media availability, is clearly challenging Jerrick Gibson for the no. 2 RB spot behind Tre Wisner. Any one thinking Gibson has the spot locked down needs to think again. - I asked one source about why we’re hearing so much positive feedback on freshman receiver Daylan McCutcheon thus far, especially in light of the other talented freshmen receivers on campus. ”He plays fast. He plays with a purpose, with an understanding of doing his job,” the source said. - Arch Manning is asserting his leadership style into the team. Sark talked about that on Tuesday. I’m also told that Trey Owens is having a solid spring camp, too, and can be just as feisty as Manning. In other words, there’s a little smack talking going on from time to time at the QB position to the defense. Also: I’m told that on the somewhat limited reps they’ve had through 7 practices, both Manning and Owens are more willing to let it rip over the middle in the red zone. Both players are not only taller than Quinn Ewers, both have higher arm angles. That’s something to monitor to see if the middle of the field actually becomes more of a focus for Sark and the Horns in the red zone in 2025. - Coaches and support staff are busy internally preparing for a significant recruiting weekend as well as the portal opening on April 16. Texas is expected to be highly and selectively aggressive in the portal.
April 10Apr 10 - Cornerback Warren Roberson was also singled out as having an improved spring. Roberson appears more “dialed in”. That's good to see. Maybe we can get him off the special teams units, where he seemingly drew a flag at least once a game.
April 10Apr 10 Popular Post CJ Vogel QB Arch Manning and RB Tre Wisner Spoke With Media Thursday AM Texas QB Arch Manning and RB Quintrevion Wisner were the first Longhorns of the 2025 Spring Practice season to speak with members of the local media on Thursday AM after practice No. 8. A few main themes are forming thus far through spring ball. Competition in practice, wide receiver room standing out and which of the newcomers are really beginning to stand out. Some highlights from this morning. *** Competitiveness in Practice Steve Sarkisian mentioned this on Monday, and it really struck a chord with me. There is a different level of competitiveness in the spring of 2025 and it is headlined by Arch Manning. It has been a few years since the practices at Denius were filled with jawwing and chirping from one side of the ball to the other, but that is where things stand currently. Arch Manning: "I think that is just the competition on this team. Obviously, Colin (Simmons) and Ant (Hill Jr.) are good players. It is kind of fun in practice to talk a little crap to them, same with (Michael) Taaffe. It makes practice more fun." Tre Wisner: "Something I have seen from our first live practice, there was a lot of yapping back and forth from the defense and offense. Those are the types of things you need at practice because it shows the competitiveness between players and we love that." *** Wide Receiver Room Texas is young, but talented at the WR room. I don't need to rundown the room again, but there have been plenty of opportunities for new faces to earn their keep this spring including Arch Manning: "Good. I live with Parker (Livingstone). And for a bunch of those guys, when you are a backup, you spend a lot of time together in practice getting those reps. It is cool now that we are all running with the ones. Tre Wisner: "(Parker Livingstone) is a baller! White Chocolate!" **** Newcomers Standing Out 22 early enrollees plus some new faces from the portal litter the practice fields currently in Austin. A look at which guys are standing out to the two backfield players for the Horns. Arch Manning: "It has been good getting these young guys up to speed. I have been really impressed with Parker and Daylan McCutcheon has been really good and is coming along well. He is getting the hang of things." Tre Wisner: "I am definitely going to have to say – from an offensive standpoint, Nick (Brooks) the O-Lineman. Kaliq Lockett looks good at receiver and James Simon, definitely. (Simon) is just very smooth. I like the way he uses his eyes and his feet are nice. He know how to move well in tight spaces and that's something you have to have to play running back at The University of Texas." *** OL Room The faces on the offensive line are familiar, but new to the starting rotation for the most part in 2025. Aside from DJ Campbell, the OL group is still fresh when it comes to play with one another. Arch Manning: Spoke very highly of Trevor Goosby as his blindside protector, also called him a heck of an athlete and basketball player Tre Wisner: "Definitely I would say Neto (Umeozulu) and (Brandon) Baker. For those two to not get as many snaps last year as some of the other guys they have definitely come into the spring with a chip on their shoulder. They have definitely showed the most improvement." Of all of the shitty JAGs we have seen in the last 15 years you chose a guy that was a bad ass and got drafted and played in the NFL. That is quite a choice, sir.

It's still so bizarre to me that DKR was castigated for putting his players through hellish practices back in 1972... and thirty years later, Bear Bryant was adulated for doing the exact same thing to his players in The Junction Boys.

Why is it bizarre? One was an expose/memoir by a person who went through the practices and found them abusive, the other was written by an author who in part lifted up the experience as creating a culture of resilient men, despite its horrors (or because of). How you tell the story, and who tells it, makes a huge difference.

April 11Apr 11 Regarding snowcones - tigers blood and cream from the place that used to be on south Lamar right at Barton Springs. Snow Beach? @closetojumping - I'll take the bet. Sounds like the terms are if White Chocolate goes 750 yards or over in any season, I win. If he never hits 750, you win. Is $20 worth your time or do I have to bet like an adult and wager $100?
