I felt the same way. Malik was very athletic but poorly developed.

He was more Swoopes than Heard. Big body with a Big Arm, but he wasnt running away from anybody. I think the comp to Swoopes is an insult to Swoopes' athletic ability, if anything.

Wrong Malik sir.

While I’m grateful to Malik for committing here and Malikemas, I don’t ever remember thinking of him as dominant. More of a reminder of our inability to develop at the time.

This is a fair assessment.  Our talent was so thin that dude was a day1 starter because he was a legit talent, and not a JAG or a 4* we were trying to convince ourselves was a 5* in sheeps clothing.  I will say that at the time, I was entirely, totally convinced that he was the keystone recruit to fully unlock our return to greatness. Alas.

You young whippersnappers do not understand the term “man amongst boys” in the literal sense.

It is a sacred term and in football the list is very short.

I was born in 1955 so my knowledge is about 1960 on.

Fortunately my dad loved football and we always had two TV’s in the early 60’s and a forty foot antenna so we could get more stations than KTBC Channel 7 in Austin.

I am sure guys like Red Grange, Bobby Lane, Otto Graham, Sammy Baugh were incredible but the first “man amongst boys” player I remember is still the greatest running back of all time, and there is no discussion here, Jim motherfucking Brown.

If you are too young look him up.

It is not even close and this term “man amongst boys” was basically created by him.

The next player in my life was Tommy Nobis.

Greatest two way player in UT history and maybe the greatest UT player ever.

While Ricky was incredible as was Vince they are not in the MAB category but one more Texas player is…

And he is the definition of “man amongst boys”

And that is Earl Campbell.

That term was created for guys like Jim Brown and Earl.

You old whippersnappers do not understand how the game of football has changed.

Even us youngs can appreciate seeing a "man amongst boys" in our own era.

You seem to be arguing that there have been no men amongst boys in the last half century.

Although I can appreciate that, I hope that you may appreciate that you have a non-recency bias.

While your choices are incredible, they are not the only ones in the MAB category.

One more state of Texas football person is ...

And he is the definition of “man amongst boys”

And that is Mike Elko.

Man among boys in the literal sense would be like that SNL skit where Peyton Manning is playing football with the kids in the park.

Otherwise, it's all figurative.

Not really.

There are less than ten football players in the last 75 years that actually fit that definition.

You have to dominate in high school, college and the pros.

If you know of more than ten please list them.

Ricky was close but does not really fit the criteria.

Vince nailed the high school and college part but not the professional part. (Fuck you Jeff Fisher)

Earl and Nobis are the only two Texas players that qualify in my opinion.

So you agree Earl and Nobis were literally figurative men amongst boys

Absolutely

Nobis was incredible and probably does not stick out as much because he played in Atlanta which was a shitty expansion team.

The criteria in my mind is being totally dominate in high school, college and the NFL and it has to be immediate.

Jim Brown speaks for himself.

He is the greatest running back in NFL history and it really is not even close.

Earl dominated high school and college and then led the NFL in rushing his first three years in the league.

If Fred Akers would have been the coach for Earl for three years I don’t think anyone would touch his rushing record. It would have been unreal.

Remember he was a wishbone fullback his first three years until Fred turned him loose as a tailback in the I formation. The rest is history.

Could 100 boys tackle Jim Brown?

Eric Dickerson gets special mention for punking aggy out of that transam...

Boy, now I remember why I have the steamboat guy on ignore. He doesn’t seem to have a firm grip of the English language and, worse, is on here poopooing Ricky Williams and Vince Young, the best players in the sport during each of their tenures. No one gives a fuck if chronic wifebeater Jim Brown was also awesome. That shit is known.

Beyond that, the other old guy shows up to stan for Eric Dickerson, a cheating piece of shit who continued his piece of shittery into the NFL and beyond. And … and the fucking guy has nothing to do with Texas, much less the fucking offseason.

This thread has taken a really dumb fucking turn here.

If we’re going to be literal, high school and NFL don’t matter. At those levels, they’re all boys amongst boys and men amongst men. That said, idgaf about the definition. The term is supposed to be a fun way to talk about physically advanced/dominant players. You don’t have to come legislate that away with an arbitrary definition.

I don’t have a great Texas nomination that hasn’t already been mentioned (maybe Sweat is an honorable mention?), but a definite non-UT guy is Calvin Johnson.
