January 23Jan 23 Man, I've only seen Dune 2, and wasn't even aware of the existence of a good chunk of these movies.

January 23Jan 23 I've seen Dune 2 and Inside Out 2 and really feel that Phyllis Smith should have been nominated for her portrayal of Sadness.
January 23Jan 23 lmao not only didn't i see most of these i've never even heard of the bulk of them 🤣 but i am a huge fan of most of the supporting actor nominees so i can root for any of them... and if Demi wins an Oscar before Cruise...lolol Villeneuve snubbed for director is a choice i guess? i predict ratings are gonna be subpar lol
January 23Jan 23 I have heard the Substance is really, really good. It is on my to watch list along with Anora and Conclave.
January 23Jan 23 I’ve seen Anora , Nickel Boys, Complete Unknown and Conclave so far. All were good but I’m not sure they were BP worthy.
January 23Jan 23 I have not seen any of these and really don't have a desire to see them even after today. First time in awhile that I have no rooting interest in who wins what.
January 23Jan 23 I plan on renting The Substance tonight. I am only aware of it from the horror movie thread here. I've seen zero advertising for it outside of that thread despite it having very well known actors. Outside of blockbusters I guess studios are just relying on word of mouth for advertising. Even after they expanded best picture nominations however long ago, I was still aware of the nominated films.
January 23Jan 23 I made this comment recently in another movie thread, but how do people even learn about new movies these days, including how/where/when they can watch/stream them? Pixar, Marvel, and Mission Impossible movies get heavily advertised, obviously, but how do non-Disney, non-action blockbusters even make an blip these days? Is it all word of mouth? Like others have said, I haven't heard of most of these. A decade ago, I had at least heard of most of the smaller, more obscure nominees.

For me, it's a combination of Letterboxd and the Big Picture podcast. The Big Pic is pretty normie/popcorn centric (aptly titled), but they do have special horror-centric episodes and other one offs, so it ends up providing a pretty good base of knowledge if you have an interest in keeping up with modern movies.
January 23Jan 23 Wild Robot was one of the best animated films I have seen in a while. It's well worth a watch regardless of your age. So much fun, my kids and I loved it. Inside Out 2 was a touching story and so well done. The way they write the emotions into the plot as characters, and show how they affect the girl is a great illustration of how to deal with emotions. It's a good story with a lot of positive and relatable aspects to it. I would be happy to see either win best Animated picture, but I think Flow will get it. Flow has an interesting style of animation that stands out from the rest. It's a bit cartoonish, almost like a video game, but still beautiful in its own way. I enjoyed watching it, and I think the dialogue-less story will appeal to Oscar voters over the others.

January 23Jan 23 Surprised Saoirse wasn’t nominated for The Outrun. Pretty strong performance as usual.

Big Pic, Blank Check are in my regular rotations
January 24Jan 24 I’m also a Big Pic listener and user of Letterboxd. So that helps me with awareness of what’s coming out and in the awards buzz. Even with that I’ve only seen half the best picture noms. Of those, my ranking would be: 1. Anora 2. Dune 2 3. Conclave 4. The Brutalist (could maybe switch this to #3, but the second half didn’t wow me as much) 5. Wicked (thoroughly enjoyed it but Best Picture it is not) I will for sure watch Compete Unknown, and as a fan of the Oscars I will probably try to see The Substance and Emilia Perez too since they got so much recognition. And there’s a handful of other category nominees I've seen (Nosferatu, A Real Pain) or plan to check out. But all that said it’s been a weak year and agree with the earlier comment that it would be very difficult for anyone who doesn’t pay close attention to the industry or make a point to go to the movies regularly to really know what’s coming out beyond the franchise releases. January 25Jan 25 I'm really surprised Queer didn't receive a single nomination, at least for Daniel Craig or Original Score. Craig was excellent in that.

While that looks amazing, the Academy is too damn US centric. The fact that this is Latvian doesn't bode well for it. And going up against two big studios in Pixar and Dreamworks is going to be a tough one. BTW, this style is called cel-shading. It takes 3d models and through use of much softer rendering "flattens" it to look more 2D.
January 25Jan 25 I’ve seen Dune 2, A Complete Unknown, Anora, and The Substance. Liked all of them for different reasons.Apparently need to watch The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez.I’m surprised how many of you seem to not at least be aware of A Complete Unknown. Timothee Chalamet was the celebrity guest on College Gameday for the SEC CCG and they ran ads for that movie in practically every commercial break for both Gameday and the actual game. Were y’all too focused on the Ro Sparks commercials?
January 25Jan 25 I made this comment recently in another movie thread, but how do people even learn about new movies these days, including how/where/when they can watch/stream them?I like movies enough that I check an app every few weeks for what’s coming soon to theaters and streaming. I also glance at RT and Metacritic and, if a movie I don’t know about gets in the 80+ range, I’ll at least watch the trailer and read a few reviews. I probably would not know about Anora and The Substance if not for that, but I liked both of them.
January 28Jan 28 Just watching Nickel Boys tonight. In what world is this a BP nominee? Not only is the story boring, and completely 1-note, but the POV style was distracting, gimmicky, and didn't lend anything to the movie.
January 28Jan 28 Watched Conclave tonight. It’s free on Peacock if you have it. Excellent performances and cinematography. Brutalist and Anora are next on my list to see want to see Brutalist in theater for sure. Saw A Complete Unknown in theater last week and loved it. Hope the rest of the nominees are as enjoyable as the ones I’ve seen so far (saw Dune II back when it came out). One of the better years in recent memory for nominated films for me so far.

January 29Jan 29 Admittedly I haven't seen all of the Best Actress performances this year, but I can't imagine anyone being better than Mikey Madison in Anora. The movie itself probably isn't Best Picture worthy (slow and repetitive for the first hour), but her performance in it was absolutely phenomenal. If she doesn't win, I'd have to imagine that most of the voters didn't watch the whole movie.

January 30Jan 30 I would like to see The Brutalist but holy hell 3 hr 34 min is a long time to sit in a theater. That will have to wait for streaming for me, which probably means after the Oscars.

January 30Jan 30 I've gotten through half of these 1. Anora 2. Dune 2 3. The Brutalist (the second half really drags it down) 4. A Complete Unknown 5. Conclave I enjoyed all 5 for sure and they're all worth seeing. I hope Anora has a big night as I like Sean Baker and want him to see him get more backing for whatever he wants to do. I hope to see Nickel Boys and I'm Still Here before the broadcast, but those don't have a chance to win outside of Best Actress. The other 3 just aren't my tempo.

I thought it was really good, and Margaret Qualley (Andie MacDowell's daughter) is a smoke show. I still Mikey Madison deserves the Oscar more than Demi. Don't get me wrong, Demi is really good, but she's only in 42% of the film as opposed to Mikey's 78% in Anora ...but Hollywood loves a comeback story and she'll likely get it for her lifetime body of work.
February 1Feb 1 Anora is still my pick. I saw The Brutalist this afternoon and it was fine. Spoiler There was more heroin than I was expecting. The money guy literally raping (dry humping?) the brilliant artist was so laughably on the nose that I'm not surprised it's got so much love from the academy. The shots of Carrara were cool.
