February 4Feb 4 I need to see Anora and A Complete Unknown. Saw The Brutalist on Sunday. I loved the first part. The 2nd part is jarring and a little too hit you over the head. That said, no issues if it wins Best Picture. I really hope it wins Cinematography. Honestly, I'm fine with this. It's fairly self-indulgent and a certain nominee is why it went away. @DiscussingFilm The Fab 5 format will not be used for this year’s acting categories at the Oscars.

I felt like there were some unnecessary things (like the whorehouse scene near the beginning) but overall it was an impressive film. Absolutely needs to be seen in a theater.

We streamed Anora and the Demi Moore movies last week. Bothere were okay but I was disappointed with both. A Complete Unknown was very entertaining and you should see it in the theater if possible.
February 18Feb 18 We're trying to work up enthusiasm for the nominees. Sad that this thread is way down on page 2, but not surprising. Fuck the studios for not making a little more investment in quality. Saw Emilia Perez last night. Fabulous feat of imagination and filmmaking. I had no idea Zoe Saldaña had such talent. I was moved. I know there's some hubub about one of the leads political comments. That really shouldn't affect the judgment of the film, but it likely will. And what the hell is Saldaña doing nominated for supporting actress? It's her movie as far as I can see. Should be best actress. Edited February 18Feb 18 by RomaVicta
February 21Feb 21 Watched Conclave last night. It was very enjoyable. I would place it behind Anora and The Brutalist. Still need to see A Complete Unknown.
February 21Feb 21 I thought September 5 was very good. It's not a best picture nom but it's up for screenplay.
February 23Feb 23 I watched The Substance tonight at home and it will probably be the last best picture nom I see before the awards. I thought it was okay, it kind of dragged for me between the opening 30 minutes setting up the premise and the batshit ending in the last 20 minutes. I guess a middling body horror movie got nominated for best picture because it was brave enough to say that it's tough for older women in Hollywood? I want to see The Nickel Boys but I wasn't able to catch it at the theater during either of its brief runs around here. I'm not really interested in Wicked or Emilia Perez and I'm not sure that I'm Still Here is an actual movie. My best picture ranking is: Anora Dune Part Two Conclave A Complete Unknown The Brutalist The Substance
February 23Feb 23 I've seen all 10 nominees. My main takeaway: The Substance was absolute shit. Demi apparently is going to win Best Actress and it's highway robbery. Should be a tossup between Mikey Madison and Fernanda Torres. I like all nine others, to one degree or another. Not to say they are all Oscar-worthy, but they are at least interesting.
February 23Feb 23 The more I sit with it I think Anora is best picture and Mikey deserves best actress.

February 25Feb 25 Saw the animated shorts yesterday. There was one I didn't really like and the rest were variations of "Eh, that was fine". Pretty uninspiring.
February 26Feb 26 Original Screenplay nominee, September 5, now available on Paramount+. Very well done, interesting and compelling watch. Would recommend. Only 95 minutes.
February 27Feb 27 Honestly have no interest in the Oscars this year but I'll be watching because Conan is the host.
February 27Feb 27 Gene Hackman better be the last person mentioned in the "In memoriam" section. That gets locked at some point. It happened a few years ago with someone (don’t remember who) who died a few days before the Oscars.

I mean this isn't like product development roadmap and software coding being pushed into production. This is an update to a powerpoint.
February 27Feb 27 I would have a hard time believing they won't have something on a two time Oscar winner, especially as the final name before they fade to black.

The gimmick of shooting the whole movie 1st person from the main characters' pov was interesting but I'm not sure it actually added to my enjoyment of the movie. I'd slot it 5th on my list of best pic noms I've seen. Edited February 28Feb 28 by WBT

February 28Feb 28 Saw the Live Action Shorts yesterday. Felt it was a better crop than the Animated ones for sure. There was one I didn't really care about but enjoyed the rest. I would say A Lien and The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent were the best.

So much fun, my kids and I loved it. Inside Out 2 was a touching story and so well done. The way they write the emotions into the plot as characters, and show how they affect the girl is a great illustration of how to deal with emotions. It's a good story with a lot of positive and relatable aspects to it. I would be happy to see either win best Animated picture, but I think Flow will get it. Flow has an interesting style of animation that stands out from the rest. It's a bit cartoonish, almost like a video game, but still beautiful in its own way. I enjoyed watching it, and I think the dialogue-less story will appeal to Oscar voters over the others. On 1/25/2025 at 5:18 AM, Captain Ron said: Watched the trailer for Flow - in. That looks fantastic. Though I don't know. While that looks amazing, the Academy is too damn US centric. The fact that this is Latvian doesn't bode well for it. And going up against two big studios in Pixar and Dreamworks is going to be a tough one. BTW, this style is called cel-shading. It takes 3d models and through use of much softer rendering "flattens" it to look more 2D. I liked Flow. the first 20 mins and this cat was in some shit. wild robot better. but I could watch both again.
March 2Mar 2 Watched A Complete Unknown last night. I'm completely fine with Chalamet winning Best Actor. He transformed into Dylan. I'm okay with him or Brody winning.

March 2Mar 2 I’ve only been able to watch Conclave, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, Dune p2, and The Seed of the Sacred Fig I would be happy with Kieran Culkin winning Best Supporting Actor and Zoe Saldana as Best Supporting Actress. Though I feel like her role was more than just supporting. I want The Seed of the Sacred Fig to win Best Foreign Film and Emilia Perez to win Best Picture Conclave was good but I think there are more Oscar worthy films this year Dune will probably win for cinematography
March 2Mar 2 I’m Still Here should win best foreign. Beautiful film. Torres killed it but I’m sure her and Mikey will both probably get snubbed in favor of Demi. I mainly just want her to win because it would make my wife/all of Brasil extremely proud.

March 2Mar 2 Found out "McConaughey" is a banned word on ESPN. Now I have to pick a boring name for my Oscar's pick em group.

March 3Mar 3 I fully understand the concept of a sound dump for bad words, but is the sound going out for a half second like every 2 mins for everyone?
March 3Mar 3 Wait, Defying Gravity wasn't nominated for best song? What the fuck? That was the best song moment of any of the major nominees. What a huge miss to not include it and then make that your opening act.
