March 10Mar 10 Saw it at Alamo this afternoon. First of, haven’t seen a movie in theater since Barbenheimer… and it was actually quite fun. Missed the movie going experience and after watching the trailer for F1, def want to catch it again in theater. As to Mickey 17, solid B-, I found it entertaining but not in the same ballpark as Parasite. Love the sci-fi setting and the dystopian future is way too real these days. However, found Mark Ruffalo’s performance a bit too over the top, and Toni Collette was way under used.
March 10Mar 10 Agreed. I went in expecting it to be one kind of movie, but it went another direction. I felt like it went over-the-top to the point of cheesy. I am getting a kick out the idea of some people leaving.

March 10Mar 10 I thought it was not bad, it wasn't funny enough to be satire or serious enough to make a salient point. Mostly just a depressing world where everyone is shitty
March 10Mar 10 Ruffalo was very over the top, but that was the point I think. Pattinson was stellar in his role though and his character went through a complete arc emotionally. He makes this worth watching. I never saw him in any of the Twilight movies. He’s been fun to watch in the movies I have seen him in. The guy can act. Also the aliens were cool. Would’ve enjoyed seeing more of them.

As to things people may find offensive, I'm imagining it's from Ruffalo's caricature.
March 10Mar 10 It was a decent little sci-fi flick. Over two hours but probably could have used a bit more exploration of the themes. I kept feeling there were missing scenes or dialogue that would have solidified everything. One thought I had based on the comment "two time loser" about the Ruffalo character was that it was intended to be a veiled caricature that had to be altered in editing with the election outcome. But it was also a fairly generic slimy politician. Those teeth.

Not a great movie, but it was a fun movie. 7 minutes ago, Herpa Derpa said: Those teeth. My 84 year old dad just got a full set of implants. That's what his teeth look like. It's very unnatural, for sure.

March 11Mar 11 I'd like my memories deleted and to be pushed into a molten lava trash pit so that I never have to think about that 2.5 hours ever again. Spoiler Pattinson was a caricature of a simpleton that ultimately I felt no emotion for. He mostly bounces around from scene to scene in a daze. We learn nothing of his past except that 1) he owes a debt to a loan shark and 2) he pushed a red button? The single scene where he breaks down from memories of his mother dying could have headed somewhere, but is then immediately cut short by an ancillary character that we hardly see again. I thought the evil multiple could be interesting but ultimately he just becomes another dazed Pattinson zombie. The finale was like something from a 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles episode. Tensely centered around a molten lava trash pit... that we've already seen 100 times in the film. Sweet Christ that was a beating.

March 13Mar 13 I just got back and I had a good time with it. Pattinson was great in playing both roles. Kudos to him. I thought Ruffalo was a tick over the line of too much. I wanted more Toni Colette but that's just a general ethos of mine. As always, Bong makes cool creatures. I get the issues people had with it, particularly around tone, but the positives outweighed the issues for me.

March 14Mar 14 I laughed some and liked some parts of it but overall it was just ok, maybe a B-. I liked some of what Ruffalo did but it was just too obvious of a mockery to be that interesting to me. It ties into the idea that life has become too strange to satirize I suppose. Pattinson was pretty good playing the two different versions. Based on the trailer I thought there would be more comical deaths leading us up to #17, kind of like Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow. I think that might have been more interesting. One big complaint is I thought almost everything shot in the interior of the ship was just too dark and washed out. I get that was meant to impart how shitty life was for them but it just looked bad. Oh, and I liked the homage to Hoth with Mickey's snowstorm attire. Edited March 14Mar 14 by WBT
April 16Apr 16 Finally caught this. Overall a fun time, and Pattinson was fantastic. Bong is so great at creating new worlds and creatures. It did feel very up and down tonally (the Ruffalo stuff did not work for me, at all). I’d put it towards the bottom of Bong’s movies, but glad he’s getting the opportunity to take swings.
April 18Apr 18 I liked it. Pattinson was solid and it was entertaining. Sidebar: First time in my life I've ever watched a pirated movie. Some douchebag in front of the screen kept getting up from his seat. Guess I deserved it for not paying my freight.
May 30May 30 Finally got around to seeing it. Saw it with the wife. I'll summarize the experience this way. She gets to pick the movie night movie for at least 3 more times before I can pick again. Pattison's acting was great. Other than that, it is a forgettable movie. As a whole, I don't think there were any likable characters in the movie, including Mickey. This feels like a post "I see dead people" M Knight Shamalamadingdong movie where he took himself way too seriously. Edited May 30May 30 by crash_davis

That’s certainly an opinion on an accomplished director… if anything I don’t think he took himself very seriously at all. Heck, if anything I wish it was less comedic overall. But I never read the book it was based on, so not sure how much of the adaptation is true to the novel or what.
August 4Aug 4 Author Man what a weird movie. I feel like the ending kinda brought it home though. Ruffalo must have loved basically doing an impression the whole time.
