Trump can’t protect our borders! We had to ask Mexico and Canada to secure our borders for us!

#408
Any news outlet reporting Mexico conceded anything to Trump to get him to delay tariffs has not done its homework. Trump boasts he got Mexico to commit to stationing 10K troops at our border. Apparently he didn't realize Mexico already has 15K troops deployed there https://prami.ibero.mx/informes-y-investigaciones/la-militarizacion-del-inm/
Trump got rolled here and almost no one seems to have noticed.

Trump seems to have gotten rolled by Trudeau too. Trudeau said Canada will spend $1.3B on border upgrades (…previously announced in December) plus appoint a fentanyl czar and “ensure 24/7 eyes on the border” (…ok)

Congratulations to Trump on securing a $1.3 billion border security deal from Canada.... which was already negotiated in December 2024.

Tariffs are going to be the new migrant caravans. Trotted out when Trump needs to try to score points with the idiots who think he did something.

Fuck this shit.  My company is looking to "retire" a bunch of people in the near future and although I'm probably not on the immediate chopping block I am close enough to retiring on my own terms that I don't have a lot of time to make up 401k losses.  Even if everything goes just peachy keen this time, I refuse to be on edge whenever King Dipshit decides he wants to fuck with stuff just for the hell of it.

Perhaps it’s time for a military parade to celebrate the victory?  Generalissimo Trumpo is probably right in the middle of fitting his new uniform.

On the off chance this somehow ends up being tied around the turnip and he is prosecuted for market manipulation, the guano guzzlers will shout,”Lawfare!”

Next time then:

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said earlier Monday that he was ripping up a contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Canada.

Ford had also said he was also banning the sale of American booze and blocking American companies from provincial contracts.

“We have some good news today. We have temporarily averted tariffs that would have severely damaged our economy, giving time for more negotiation and time for cooler heads to prevail,” Ford said in a statement. “With the U.S. pausing tariffs, Ontario will also pause our retaliatory measures.”

What a master class of market manipulation that absolutely nobody saw coming. What some of you learned today with those swollen ankles and tears in your eyes, is that DJT has a greater pump fake than D.Wade and Paul Pierce. He literally taught Hakeem the Dream Shake. Buying opportunities for all today. Tariffs on Canda hurt lib states, no tariffs on Mexico cause it hurts Trump states.

Fuck it, I'm gonna leave it Canda. Their broke asses cant afford another vowel

So nothing happens again. If it weren't for Elon Musk running around breaking shit this would be a fairly accurate recreation of Trump 1.0.

Smoot-Hawley, Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act.

True story. Senator Smoot of Utah introduced a bill to give my great-great grandmother a pension for her husband’s role as a veteran of the Civil War.   He (my g-g-gf) obviously forgot to tell his wife something, as it turns out he deserted from the infantry, returned to Michigan, and then accepted a $ bonus to join the cavalry (record keeping was almost not existent, so he was successfully able to do this.  I visited the national archives and viewed his actual civil war enlistment records in Washington DC a decade ago).

He deserted again when the cavalry was called to duty in Tennessee.   He eventually joined the Mormon church and headed out to Idaho to Homestead.

Senator Smoot was not the smartest man.

There were actually quite a few Union soldiers who collected multiple signing bonuses this way. Even better if you could get paid by a rich man to serve in his place if he got drafted.

It's a good question.  On the surface I think it's a simple enough thought/fear that's easy to "envision" happening, but in reality what would actually have to happen across a significant number of states and across the 3 branches of federal government, is mind boggling.  I just don't think that's a risk for 2029.

This is like saying there’s no way a Nuclear Holocaust could have actually happened in 1983 because Stanislav Petrov was there to prevent it.

Bounty jumper!

GG-Granddaddy Canecutter was a spy. Meaning probably more like a freelance scout. One day, up a tree with his horse tied up deeper in the woods, a Union patrol rode up and camped right below him. All night. He had to figure out how to pee silently against the tree, but he was a spy! Nobody saw him.

Next morning they rode off, and he no doubt climbed down and puked, shit, and went blind.

A while later he became a super-duper spy as in he vanished from the Confederate ranks as well. Stealthy, like. Climb your own damn trees, sir.

The other thing about tariffs.  Assume for a moment that they are immediately effective:  people quit buying imported goods and instead pay a premium for domestic goods, or at least goods from non-tariffed nations.  Importation slows and stops.  Tariff revenue dries up.

If they are to be used as a revenue measure, it's taxation of Americans pure and simple.

Trying to use them as a revenue measure is pure idiocy.

So, can you maybe tell us what the fucking point of it all was?

This is like a hysterical wife threatening divorce over leaving the toilet lid up. And then talking her off the ledge by reaching a deal that you'll put it down if she'd flush her piss and TP that she always leaves floating.

Okay, so now we're going to pretend that the US will crack down on smuggling assault weapons into Mexico, and they'll crack down on fentanyl being smuggled into the US.

You're the Trump supporter. Tell us, what's the beef with Canada again? They're not a major source of undocumented migrants and fentanyl. Explain that shit.

Do you just enjoy the chaos, or what?

In NL you briefly get the toilet stank right as you cross the river, then it's all dried fruit, AC blowing out of shoe stores, and motor oil from whatever that armored car is that has the big machine gun pointed south into town.

I was going to say if you think Matamoros is sticky then Nuevo Laredo is sticky butt crack in comparison.

It really is weird how that smell hits you as you cross over the Rio Grande. My first time I ever crossed over I asked how do they keep the smell on the other side.

Now Matamoros on the other hand is really pleasant compared to NL. The only bad smell I remember was my buddy that caught the flu but wanted to party in South Padre/Matamoros for spring break anyway.

After an evening of drinking we stopped at a taco stand and my sick drunk buddy ripped an SBD. The women at the taco stand were complaining about the red headed American farting, the people behind us were gagging. It was a horrific smell. Then he kept doing it in the line to cross back over the border.
