I'm starting to see reports about ICE agents trying to round up immigrants. It's starting in Austin. One of the more heinous aspects of this is that the feds have not instructed agents to stay away from traditionally safe spaces like schools, hospitals, and churches. Austin ISD is more than 50% Hispanic, and I'm sure we're going to see a big drop in attendance with parents not wanting to bring their kids to school or pick them up, lest they get arrested.

How do we talk to our kids about this? What should they do if they are approached? How can they help their friends who may have undocumented family members?

Flexing your ability to travel to a country you aren’t a citizen of to take advantage of their healthcare services while bitching about immigrants abusing the system is certainly something

  • What’s worse than your average maga about sparky is he’s posting this vitriol while sitting at a dialysis machine getting a life extending service paid for by you, me, and the very immigrants he despi

Tell them they are fucked and the orange man in charge is a racist piece of shit.

There is no other way to put it, they should be scared that's a feature not a bug.

Tell ICE to fuck off if they ever approach you, just like any other LEO, never ever talk to the cops.

You can help them by keeping in touch with them when they leave and giving them support when they go back.

There are going to be lots of terrible stories of "collateral deportations" of non-criminal undocumented people who get swept up in raids. People who've been in this country for over a decade and are contributing members of society, have families with children who were born here, and have jobs that help the economy. We're going to hear about citizens who also get swept up because they don't have something that proves their citizenship on them or are accused of having fake citizenship documents.

Canned food and/or supplies. A lot of them are staying home and hiding, so that needs to be a priority.

It won't matter to those at the top, but this is going to crush some small local businesses -- construction, restaurant, etc.  At a minimum prices will rise, but some of those businesses will have no choice but to close.

Yep. At the same time the price of Tamales might go down on NextDoor.

I am kidding. Fuck this BS. Committed a crime? Deport his ass. Member of ISIS? Lock him up, then deport his ass.

To the white supremacists just being non white is a demographic threat.

The morons of this country, millions being non white, just elected white supremacists to run the country.

This is what ignorance and stupidity get all of us. We have to pay the price for the sins of the American moron.

My hope is that some of these raids start to affect larger MAGA donors in the construction and other industries who rely on immigrant labor, which might cause Trump to tap the breaks on his mass deportations.  But who am I kidding.  Trump and Abbott still won't give a shit.

I swear I saw an article saying that a big chunk of farm laborers didn't show up to work last week because of this, but I can't find it now.

I imagine any news that is critical of or could reflect poorly on Dear Leader will start getting harder and harder to find.

This morning on NPR I heard that one in five Floridians are immigrants, so that state is bracing big-time for these deportation raids.

After giving it some thought, I was trying to view your hope as not in vain, but your final conclusion is likely the correct one. While the $$ drain may end up taking its toll and cause alarm to some business sectors, there are also the strategies the GOP has floated before--child labor, for one. Or eliminating welfare, and other programs. And so on. I wondered if that was one of their schemes with eliminating taxing gratuities. They may also 'encourage' more females to return to low cost labor especially if other avenues for them begin to close due to new prohibitions on hirings (i.e. the merit myth the GOP is so hung up on) and/or having a pregnancy derail college or hs opportunities due to a lack of support. That used to seem far fetched by now it seems all too real.

How to accomplish this? I imagine families will also be reticent to go to the Central Texas Food Bank.

Maybe Mobile Loaves and Fishes?  That's the only group I tend to deal with.  Others?

That part could get a little dicey. Homan made it pretty clear that anyone caught aiding them puts themselves at risk of prosecution.

Same here, I only learned the bad words.

I can't imagine these workers have a ton of savings to live off of.

If anyone knows a fund I can contribute towards or volunteer for to help out the folks who are not showing up for work, I'd like to do so.

There's going to be a lot of those kind of stories. All it takes is one MAGA teacher. We're going to also see stories of neighbors calling in "tips" legitimate or not on brown skinned people and more in your face video recordings of people saying they will "have you deported" to people who are Hispanic.

These raids and the ensuing cruelty is definitely giving the cremains of my dead FIL a hard on. I remember his broke ass lamenting not having the money to hire the "good w*tbacks" his neighbors could afford to work his ranch in Harper. A ranch he inherited and that his wife supported by working multiple jobs into her 60s while his lazy ass spent his days chain smoking & getting drunk on rot gut scotch.

He's the poster child of MAGA. Pissed at the world because a white male boomer veteran w/ a degree from UT just couldn't get a fair shake because of the free money & benefits all the illegals were getting. I'm sure he's cackling from the depths of hell with what's going on today.

People informing on their neighbors and colleagues? Gee, when have we seen that before?

If parents start keeping kids at home in any sort of significant numbers, it will result in the school districts losing state funding. Win/win for Abbott and his cronies.

“Hello, ICE? Yes, I’d like to report an illegal alien. Last name Musk, first name Elon. Current location west wing of the White House.”

Part of me wants to see these immigration raids lead to higher prices so the poor Trump voter will struggle to pay for groceries. However I hate that many other, good people will also suffer if we see high inflation with food and restaurant prices.

They won't care. They'll blame everyone else but Trump. Or they'll be fine with their own pain because it's necessary to be a MAGA.

This is the missing piece here.

As with anything else in America, tie it back to a monetary value and ROI number and make a business case to get your point of view across and implemented.

e.g. "if you idiots deport all these illegals, your monthly lawn, pest control, and pool bill is going to jump $300+, your grocery bill will go up $300+, and any sort of home building, remodel, home project you have in mind for 2025 is going to double."

That will get the suburban folks at least talking about a compromise.

This would also mitigate climate change and environmental impacts.  If we consume less due to higher prices that’s a positive for both.

My brother, this has been the entire issue for the last 3 years. American's will NOT stop spending even when exacerbating inflation. We have zero impulse control and access to way too many and too much line of credit.

This kind of stuff is why democrats lost election. Trying to quibble over the numbers being lower vs what the fuck is happening is just bullshit. The program just started and it will get a lot worse before it gets better.

Have we raided the meat processing plants in South Dakota, Missouri, Arkansas etc, or are we just fucking with cities like Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Austin etc? Come on Reds

I own a small construction company and we do a lot of roofing and painting.  I talked to a crew leader a couple of days ago about this ( it was a kind of interview to see if I wanted to hire him for roofing).  He is an illegal immagrant working here and working the system.  He is a Trump supporter and he supports getting rid of undocument workers.  He said his crews think the same way.  Far out.

I won't get into too many details but Chicago will fight this shit to the fullest.  It won't be easy but I can guarantee you ICE agents won't feel comfortable around Chicago.  Of course, the politics are much more fucked in Texas so it will be more difficult.  But I'm sure there's good people down there that will band together to do their best.  It's still gonna be ugly, but it's not hopeless imo.

Border town latinos were heavily in the tank for Trump.  The propaganda worked.  Much of it on radio, which gets to a lot of these folks.  On any work site, you'll have radios blasting all damn day with this shit spewing almost constantly.  Unless construction has changed in the 25 years since I was last doing it...
