Too bad about the woman that was shot by Ice in Minn. I guess she considered herself a "Sovereign Citizen" and had no need to obey the lawful orders given to her... Hey, y'all remember the black woman

  • Flexing your ability to travel to a country you aren’t a citizen of to take advantage of their healthcare services while bitching about immigrants abusing the system is certainly something

  • What’s worse than your average maga about sparky is he’s posting this vitriol while sitting at a dialysis machine getting a life extending service paid for by you, me, and the very immigrants he despi

But it seems like the loophole is you dont have to show ID unless they detain you. So I assume they just make up a bullshit reason to detain you if you wont show ID.

I don’t think you’d have to give them ID even if driving. They aren’t LEOs

If you support ICE, and what they do, I hope that what they do happens to you and yours: I hope that you are thrown to the ground, bloodied, tossed in an unmarked vehicle, renditioned to a secondary location after being terrorized for hours, and then dumped. And/or I hope that you and yours are hit with a gallon of fucking caustic chemicals in the face when you are not presenting a physical threat to anyone. You are okay with that. So I hope that it happens to you, your family, your children. Gift link from Defector. If you do not subscribe to anything besides Surly, well, this should be the other subscription. I think you can get it for 12 per month. That means all of you here who read about sports and politics should be a paid subscriber to Defector. They cover everything you could possibly want to read about. They have the best American political writer in David Roth (no close 2nd to him), but they also really, really hate anything associated with TFG, especially ICE.

There is no equivalent to that site, at all. Now seeing them write books like Giri Nathan’s book about Alcaraz and Sinner (fantastic read and I met Giri before he wrote it. Absolutely a really good person.) I really hope folks here will subscribe to them. It would be cool if Imma had some kind of partnership with Defector. Not sure how it would work, but would be good.

In other news, I'm reading that 1,000 more immigration officials are headed to Minneapolis. They're not going there to perform an immigration role, they're going there to punish locals who are protesting them. ICE or Border Patrol have zero remit to fight american citizens who opposed to said ICE/BP activities. I have to assume that an immigrant (documented or not) is understandably staying as far away from a protest as possible.

Those officials maybe border patrol agents/DHS officials that were already announced as going up there and Noem is pretending like it's an additional surge. Minneapolis has 425,000 people, in a metroplex of around 3.8 million. Minnesota isn't close to being the state with the largest immigrant population, but Trump is fixated on them/their governor (and he was embarrassed in California and Chicago/Illinois, and probably doesn't want to tangle with Houston, and praised NYC and its new mayor), and he and ICE portrayed Minneapolis as a crime-ridden hellhole (it's not, I have friends there and in St. Paul).

Right now, in Minnesota (and said friends say ICE is operating all over Minnesota and not just the main cities), people have set up all kinds of social media tools to track ICE from when they leave their hotels until they return, and when ICE does a raid or goes after somebody, there are people responding quickly and showing up and at the least filming, and at the most, challenging them on Constitutional grounds (and in several cases, the agents back down when it's clear the people they are talking to know their shit). They are tracking license plates of the vehicles ICE is using (and apparently ICE is swapping plates).

This is not going over well with the leadership, and ICE has to show that they can get it under control, and that they scare the shit out of civilians, which means we will probably see a lot more innocents beaten, car windows smashed, etc., and probably a few more deaths. If they can't get Minneapolis/Minnesota under their control, they won't be able to do the same in New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, etc. if they roll thousands of agents into those cities in the future.

And seriously, people in Minneapolis/Minnesota are getting their shit together on tracking the ICE/DHS agents and communicating whereabouts and following and filming them and challenging them. It's not being publicized, either because the non-local media isn't paying attention, or because it's not sexy enough for 60-second soundbites, but people up there are fucking badasses. And people are showing up from elsewhere in the US to help track ICE and to help out people being threatened by ICE.

Here we are, we have federal agents who are not even full-blown law enforcement challenging Americans for their papers. I toss in that when Trump's out of office, are they cool with a liberal doing this same stuff in red states and rural areas? (most don't know enough about the difference in how they can operate in border versus non-border states).

The bigger thing I'm pointing out, and this has pissed off some, is that Rush Limbaugh was beating the drum about all of this back in the 90s, was raising the alarm that a Big Government President was going to use federal agents in a "papers please" capacity and here we are. It's just that Limbaugh got the party wrong. Limbaugh actually nailed a lot down on what Trump/Noem are doing, just the wrong party.

This is not real hard to predict since we live in a nation of citizens armed to the teeth, but once the weather warms up the spark that will really set all this off will be when someone shoots and kills someone in ICE in one of these raids. I do not endorse killing folks, but you can see where this is headed. The next step after that involves a brutal government crackdown on the citizens of our country. Try to make sure that if you have to that y’all have a way for you and your family to be on the move quickly to a safe place or a new country if possible.

When it comes to stuff like this, I want to make sure it is real. Chat GPT seems to think it’s not.

What

is

 accurate

1.

Collective punishment as a concept

✔️ The description of collective punishment is broadly correct.

Authoritarian and fascist regimes—including Nazi Germany—did implement policies where harm to one member of a favored group triggered reprisals against a broader civilian population.

Examples given in the text (e.g., reprisal ratios like 100 civilians executed for 1 German soldier killed, and atrocities such as Lidice) are historically accurate.

2.

Geneva Convention

✔️ It is correct that collective punishment is prohibited under international law, specifically Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention (1949).

What is

not

 accurate (or is misleading)

1.

The phrase itself

There is no credible historical evidence that the exact phrase

“One of ours, all of yours”

was a recognized slogan, chant, or formal wording used by Nazi Germany, the SS, or other fascist regimes.

Historians can document:

  • The policy of collective reprisals

  • The orders and ratios used

  • The crimes themselves

But not this specific wording as a historical slogan.

This is the key problem.

2.

Implied translation

Saying it “translates to”

“You kill one of ours, we kill all of you”

is an interpretive paraphrase, not a translation of any documented German phrase.

It describes the effect of Nazi reprisal policies, but it is not a known historical quote.

3.

“Associated with fascist regimes”

⚠️ This is rhetorically strong but academically loose.

A more accurate framing would be:

  • The idea of collective punishment was used by fascist regimes

  • Not that this specific phrase is historically associated with them

The Department of Homeland Security shared a propaganda video on the social media site X.

https://sojo.net/articles/opinion/ice-quotes-bible-new-propaganda-video

The one-minute video opens with footage of helicopters taking off, and a man with a thick Southern accent says, “Here’s a Bible verse I think about sometimes. Many times.” As people in military fatigues don masks and ready weapons inside the helicopter, the man quotes Isaiah 6:8: “I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’”

As the helicopter takes off, a sonorous cover of Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” plays before the man finishes the verse: “I said, ‘Here am I. Send me.’” A cut to a close-up of an arm patch that reads “U.S. Customs and Border Protection.” The final half of the video cycles through shots of ICE agents patrolling a river, flying over the border wall, and looking through night vision while singers chant, “Sooner or later, God’ll cut you down.”

In other words, the video rips Isaiah’s call narrative (6:1-13) out of its original context to baptize ICE’s war on non-white Americans.

I was thinking of a hypothetical/analogy, with the tables turned.

If you take the current Federal actions and tactics but replace "Trump" with "Obama", replace "ICE" with "ATF", replace "enforcing immigration laws" with "enforcing gun laws", replace "targeting random people of color" with "targeting random 30-60 year old white guys", and replace "Minneapolis" with "DFW", what would the reaction from the right be?

Hell, what would the reaction be if Biden's DEA had used similar escalation to crack down on ill-gotten boner pills?

As I said, Rush Limbaugh literally predicted all of this, exactly as you say - with a Democratic administration going after Republican areas.

I've told one older relative that they can bet that if this stuff doesn't stop, a Democrat will win the White House and do this exact thing in red areas. Obviously, it won't, but this is the shit they were told to be afraid of for 20 years.

It's hard to think that some (all?) of the Trump administration want violence between ICE and the public. They want this to provide them cover for the 40% of the public who will accept intervention on the streets and the ballot box in November. Declare martial law in the large cities and voting becomes problematic there.

#4286

100% agree. And I know it's easy for me to say from a safe place hundreds of miles away. But protesters need to use every fiber of their being to not react violently.

I'll never fault them for doing so, but it does harm the cause.

If he thought he could declare martial law, and federalize the NG, he would have already done it - he's not a complex person. Instead, he got neutered over the National Guard stuff, and he got embarrassed in California (remember when Los Angelas was more dangerous than Fallujah?) and Illinois, and now ICE is being challenged in Minnesota.

I do believe some want violence, because they want the American people to fear ICE, not organize online to meet ICE face-to-face and challenge them for warrants, with cameras, when they show up somewhere, etc. Locals are now tracking ICE and their activity everywhere in Minneapolis. What is being done in a smallish city in Minnesota (425,000 or so people, although the metroplex is over 3 million) in terms of challenging ICE would easily scale up in Los Angeles or Houston or NYC.

I think they will kill one or more Americans in the next few weeks and I think we will see a lot more beatdowns. They have to try and reestablish that they are in control and should be feared and that they control the narrative, instead of being mocked for not being able to handle ice, etc.. Puppy Killer is angry that the people aren't buying her narrative.

And as I said, Trump will be happy that it's taking Epstein and Venezuela and Greenland out of the news.

#4288

Rural MN friend told me today ICE is visiting dairies and if they wanna be true to their cause, they should. LOTS of work visa (H1b) workers there. I believe these employers are diligent in confirming their validity, but certainly a few slip through. Add to it they're rounding up everybody and you'll hopefully see traditional rural folks evaluating their voting decisions.

"Try that in a small town," if you will.

I didn't fully appreciate until today that ICE is taking the spot of the National Guard in the role of the national police force for Trump. He can't legally justify sending in the military so everything is disguised as immigration enforcement support. Hence why ICE is hiring thousands and deploying more and more technology to lock down the country. I do believe that ICE is also going after immigrants but most of the videos are them fighting citizens, which is crazy.

About five years ago I remember reading an article where the writer was focusing on three existential threats to the world:

1) climate change, 2) nuclear weapons, 3) the large population growth of lower educated males with no jobs or opportunities, creating roving bands of armed fuckwits.

I thought at the time that no. 3 seemed the most vague.

It has a great deal to do with being one of the world's largest, best-funded militaries (seriously, compare the budget to global military budgets...it's right up there near the top) to be deployed (1) on American soil (2) against anyone the regime chooses to target and (3) answerable only to the regime, and immune from and not subject to any laws (pardons will be issued routinely and frequently when the time comes).

ICE is an enemy occupying force, doing everything we all read about "secret police" of any number of authoritarian regimes doing back in the 80s and shit.
