Yeah, vids don’t work currently to my knowledge

Yeah, more and more reports that that is indeed the CRJ.

What's crj?

The most claustrophobic commercial plane to fly on.

Landed 45 min ago is one way to put it.

Not what I was hoping to see right after putting my daughter on her first flight this afternoon

CRJ-700 with a capacity of up to 68 people.  Really hope this wasn't a full flight.

Reports I’m seeing are 60 souls.

What is a Metro police helicopter doing anywhere near the approach to DCA?

Pilots get disoriented during a pursuit of some sort?

They operate out of there. That is real congested airspace. DCA is used by lots of non-DOD/DOS groups.

Capitol Police, USCG, etc.

Well, shit. I hate flying in and out of DCA, such a congested airspace.

Wow. I would have never guessed that given the amount of commercial traffic DCA gets.

Hooks has a lot of national guard helicopter activity after Tomball Jet was seized because the owner didn’t pay taxes.

frikin helicopter landed in a field next to the runway on short final. It was disorienting.

Yeah, but the approach can be gorgeous.

Blackhawk? Andrews AFB is right there on the east side of DC.

Looks like the helicopter flew right into CRJ on short final crap, holy hell this is awful

Blackhawk seems verified. Not sure about the call sign.

BREAKING: American Airlines Flight 5342 has collided with a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The military aircraft, identified as PAT25, is believed to be a Priority Air Transport mission, typically designated for VIP transport operations.

I drive by there daily.  There’s always a ton of action for a smaller airport.

Yeah, a lot. That airspace is always active except for quiet time. When I lived in Crystal City had a view of this same approach line. Was crazy how much non-commercial air was there and it is surrounded by no-go airspace. DC, Pentagon, etc.

Oh boy…if you’ve ever flown into Reagan on the River Visual approach, you know it’s pretty sporty.  Due to proximity to restricted airspace, they essentially follow the Potomac as base leg until a sharp right turn final just past the bridges.  If you ever fly into Reagan, take a left side window seat if the weather is supposed to be nice.

I’ve nerded out on those bridges before, just watching arrivals for a bit on my way to mandatory Changing of the Guard at Arlington National.

Often you’ll see Blackhawks or police helicopters at low level, crossing the river into the city, and have wondered what the separation rules are around Roosevelt Island…you’ve got crews who are probably laser focused on not busting the airspace, descending, about to turn final while low, slow, dark helicopters  cross perpendicular below you.  If that’s what happened here, awful but sorta surprised it hasn’t happened already.

edit:  didn’t see replies above while typing that up

I got to DC somewhat regularly...River Visual landing is some cool shit.  Once sat next to a dude that it was his first time on an airplane.  He did NOT enjoy it.

This sucks

All the regular pilots were recently fired

Yeah, Roosevelt is the cross path coming from the west for USG assets heading into DC. You see all sort of aircraft over DC.

In this map you can see how close Andrews is. (I still am not used to new name).

Oh, please tell me there were some politically important people in that chopper.

Bolling has always been Bolling. Andrews is further east outside the district

Sorry get them mixed up. Worked for a group that had the AF 1 contract and was odd. Based at Andrews, assigned to Boiling.

So how does this happen?  Air traffic control doesn't know about the Blackhawk and it's too low for radar on the Blackhawk to know about the plane?

Rumors right now are of 60+ dead or missing

Well of course. A passenger jet about to land 33 in DCA ended up in the water.
