There's 'overwhelming evidence' tariffs have raised consumer prices, says Bank of America

  • Analysts at the Bank of America said tariffs have raised prices for consumers.
  • They wrote in a note that consumers have covered about 50% to 70% of the cost of levies to date.
  • This suggests tariffs will continue to put "upward pressure" on inflation, they said.

For the Bank of America, President Donald Trump's levies have boosted consumer inflation, and there's no uncertainty about that.

"We think there's no debate — tariffs have pushed consumer prices higher," analysts, including Aditya Bhave, managing director and senior US economist at the research unit of the banking giant, wrote in a note on October 31.

What's bizarre about this is they're doing it country-by-country.  There's no emergency, period.

more #winning. I wonder how long this anti-American sentiment lasts after Trump. Companies are pivoting to non-US suppliers and will sign long term contracts. Consumers are creatures of habit. When they shift brands, they don't usually go back.

US factories rocked by ‘unprecedented’ rise in unsold stock

US factories are suffering from an “unprecedented” rise in unsold stock as Donald Trump’s trade war hits their overseas sales.

American manufacturers’ unsold inventory soared at the fastest pace in more than 18 years in October, according to the S&P Global Manufacturing purchasing manager’s index (PMI).

Businesses reported that their production exceeded overall demand after tariffs saw their export orders slump for the fourth month in a row.

Sales declined to key markets such as Canada, China, Europe and Mexico, which have all been hit by steep new US tariffs. Although Mr Trump’s tariffs apply to imports from these countries, it seems they have also had a damaging impact on US sales abroad.

Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said the surge in unsold stock was “worrying” and “unprecedented”.

Mr Williamson said: “[It was] widely linked to weaker than anticipated sales to customers, especially in export markets, which could trigger a downshifting of production in the coming months unless demand revives.”

Business confidence among consumer goods producers fell to a two-year low as manufacturers became concerned about future demand.

Mr Williamson added: “Firms [are] growing increasingly worried about household spending in the US and falling sales to consumers in export markets.”

It's not really a "war" if the other side doesn't fight back. And since we "attacked" first, without provocation in most instances, I don't blame them. Anyone with a lick of sense shouldn't be surprised at all by this.

So, you raise prices at home so consumers are squeezed, you kick over-seas sales in the balls, and then you cross your fingers that domestic sales can pick up the slack in already over-extended households.

Seems like a great strategy.

The failure of Dems to remedy these issues during the Biden administration will be seen as a great failure in our democracy.  Then again, the Republicans fought them every step of the way, even though they knew it may at some point mean their own demise.  Insanity.

A lot of them are constitutional, so not the Democrats' fault unless you want to fault them for not calling a convention or putting amendments on the calendar.

They could have remedied a few of them. But so much more are needed. Seems like so much was just a gentleman’s agreement like the ability to knock down half the White House. The House needs to be expanded, maybe even disband the Senate. So much needs to be fixed

I think he would probably issue an order by fiat that funds from his extralegal actions and policy be redistributed. Hey wait, isn't that what the President is proposing?

So lets say 200 million people are going to get 2k. That's 400 Billion. And he's only collected 195 billion from Tariffs. So we're going to tack another 200 or so billion in debt?

Only 200 million Americans?  Nah, he's going to hit up as many people as possible.  He needs distractions.

He didn't even talk to the Treasury Secretary, he just proclaimed it into existence.

Trump says he'll issue $2,000 tariff dividend to all except 'high-income people' - ABC News

Quote

In an interview on ABC News' "This Week" on Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that he had not spoken with Trump about the proposed dividend.

Quote

"The $2,000 dividend could come in lots of forms, in lots of ways, George," Bessent told anchor George Stephanopoulos. "You know, it could be just the tax decreases that we are seeing on the president's agenda -- you know, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, deductibility of auto loans."

And it will be a check for $2,000 with his big-ass signature on it, complete with a letter mailed to every household.

He's going to make damned sure everybody knows it's his idea.

He's going to give out "stimulus"....to an economy that doesn't presently need stimulus (although he's certainly doing the lord's work to get us to that point).

He's going to give out something like $400 billion from a bucket that's collected less than $200 billion.  Where are all my GQP deficit hawks?

He's NOT going to use that $195 billion to reduce the deficit that he's caused to grow at lighting speed.  Again, where are all my GQP deficit hawks?

This is fan-fucking-tastic.  We are a fucking joke of a country.

Oh, they SAY there are.  Wait till when/if (HUGE "if" there) we ever get another Dem POTUS.  All of those people sitting in their cave silently right now will fly out to shriek as loudly as they can about "this is unsustainable!  It's an existential threat!"  I mean, they'll have to start by clearing their throats, because they didn't utter a fucking PEEP the previous four years.

$500-600 billion.  He’s going to give out as much as he can to as many people as he can. I won’t be surprised if he tried to make it happen before Christmas, given that the tariffs will affect Christmas spending.

bro don't be such a caveman - "bucks"?? He's got all that super-valuable $TRUMP coin just sitting there! Why not just issue stimulus in the form of his own private scrip? Save the public debt and all that hooey

This.  You send it out, and tell everyone it's legal tender.  Then, when retailers and such say "ummm....yeah, we won't be accepting it," threaten those retailers with government reprisals and sanction if they DON'T convert your imaginary Trump bucks into real money.   Which also...and this is key....has the effect of monetizing all the OTHER Trump bucks you hold in your personal possession.

So, his bucket full of imaginary money suddenly turns into a bucket full of $10 billion in value, because he's able to use the threat and power of the government to enrich himself.

But, you know...he's drained the swamp and all that.

That's the best part about how dumb this idea is from Trump, going to be a trillion-dollar swing in the red on the deficit when supposedly the tariffs were all about "paying down" the deficit...

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hints at income limit on Trump's $2,000 tariff checks

Quote

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that the Trump administration has discussed restricting the president’s proposed $2,000 tariff dividend to families making less than six figures.

“Well, there are a lot of options here that the president’s talking about a $2,000 rebate and those — that would be for families making less than, say, $100,000,” Bessent told “Fox & Friends” Wednesday. “We haven’t,” Bessent clarified when asked if the Trump administration decided on that limit. “It’s in discussion.”

The White House says President Trump is signing an Executive Order that will reduce tariffs on beef, tomatoes, coffee, and bananas.

I’m sure the farmers and ranchers are happy about the beef tariffs being dropped.

And I thought tariffs were paid for by other countries, but this is supposed to lower prices for American consumers.

Dude.  The tariffs are a big, beautiful tax on other countries.  And stopping the tariffs will obviously make things cheaper for American consumers, who also weren't paying for the tariffs.

Trying to buy some under engine plastic splash shields. Want genuine parts because the non-oem shit tends to melt from the heat of the engine. Shipping for these things is ridiculous, so I googled the part numbers. Found a dealer on ebay who is $100 cheaper than the others (clearing old stock maybe?), and shipping is only $40 instead of $85. Overall $140 saved.

Dealer is in Canada. What's the tariff rate on a Japanese auto part shipped from Canada? Could be 35%. Add onto that whatever fee DHL wants and I might still be saving $40 or so but it might be about the same or it might be more. No idea.

While the imports should have been tariffed at 10%, an invoice from UPS tariffed the oils at rates up to 200% — the same duty applied to Russian aluminum.

UPS just picks random rates to apply, sends bills to a 15 year old
