Sure, you're a cheap fucking billionaire with more money than God who decided you wanted to add sports franchises to your portfolio but didn't realize you actually have to pay players to have a competitive and therefore profitable franchise? I have never been more against legalized gambling in the state of Texas than I am today. Tank the organization, give soft, nonsensical answers for the decision, fan interest, attendance and TV viewership plummets, use that as reason to relocate team to Las Vegas. Now where have I seen this move in action before???? HMMMMM Edited February 2Feb 2 by Surly Bevo

Get drafted, become a good player, near the payday and get traded. Do the Adelsons have any connection to Dallas? They are known Laker fans. Also an NBA franchise in Vegas is worth a fuckload - not just to the franchise owner, but to the league. The NBA has 3 very well run franchises surrounding Dallas. This seems very obvious as to what’s going on…
February 2Feb 2 Taking a franchise out of a top 5 TV market doesn't seem to be in the NBA's best interests. Does anyone give a shit about the Las Vegas Raiders other than for a "cool" away game or Super Bowl destination?

February 2Feb 2 Did they win the Finals? I believe they got “gentleman swept”. The Celtics were clearly the better team. 28 other teams would have traded places with the mavs to be there.

The NBA sure as fuck is. Look at where the stars keep ending up in free agency… So if the players want it in a player dominated league, top 5 market be damned. To summarize, the Adelsons get legalized gambling in Texas or an NBA franchise in Vegas. Win Win. Edited February 2Feb 2 by ChiTownDoc
February 2Feb 2 Ignoring for a minute that you never trade a 25 year old superstar under any circumstance unless he demands it, the return is egregious. They should have gutted the Lakers for every asset they had short of Jerry Buss’s toupee. They got one lousy first round pick. No Reaves. No Knecht. No swaps. Nada. Awful. They surely could have gotten a better return by opening up the process. And the Mavs themselves have mortgaged a lot of picks down the road to win now. They could have restocked all of that. And of course it’s the Lakers because that’s how this always happens. Wilt, Kareem, Shaq, Kobe, LeBron. The whole thing is just unbelievable.

February 2Feb 2 Also the nba can extract billions for an expansion franchise in Vegas. The other owners get shit if they move one there. That makes zero sense to me that this is their long game.

February 2Feb 2 I don’t follow the NBA really. I knew Luka was really good. But it sounds like he’s fat and probably won’t play this season? How is this trade a bad deal?

Can’t believe I have to explain the last part, lest someone get their panties in a wad. edit: even the bears who are horrible at these things bought land for a hundred million plus in Arlington Hts and looking back had zero intentions of moving but can now twist the broke ass city’s arm to get what they want on the lake front. February 2Feb 2 My only offering in this matter is this regarding Cuban and the Adelsons: the Adelson’s and Cuban struck a deal that includes a handshake agreement on future casinos in Texas. Apparently both groups feel that this is happening (I have no clue or care on the matter), and Cuban wanted in with them. But I believe a casino close to a new arena or something similar as well as part-ownership for Cubes was “the deal”.

Cuban retaining 28% of the franchise was very likely a requirement by the Adelsons’s, not Cuban’s desire. Most private equity deals require that. First, it ensures the seller remains cooperative and helpful after the deal closes, but more importantly it reduces the amount of money required to fund the deal, raising the return on equity down the line once the entity sells again in the future.
February 2Feb 2 Do y'all think this is orchestrated by the league, i.e. Gretzky from Edmonton to the Kings; or much less dubious or deliberate than that? DFW is a great market and home of the most valuable franchise in sports. The Mavs are the only one that truly belongs to Dallas. I don't really follow the NBA beyond casual stuff, but gambling/ casino play is intriguing as hell.

February 2Feb 2 There's gotta be a stream of Mavs fans burning their jerseys at this point. And deservedly so. The Mavs and the NBA fucked this six ways to Sunday. If it was known Luka was on the block half of the reporters heading to New Orleans for the SB would be looking into flight changes. They could have milked this for weeks. And the Mavs would have gotten more than a bucket of warm spit for Luka. Fuck the Lakers. This whole thing stinks of shady backroom dealings.
February 2Feb 2 Harrison said this trade was built over the last 3 weeks of conversation. Crazy that he wouldnt try to shop to another team. Even if you wanted AD just to try and up the offer and get more in the way of picks.

The main reason those moves "worked out" is because they had a top 3 player in the world carrying the franchise. HE didn’t let him walk. That was decided the offseason before. When he just came in yes the Kai trade is good in hindsight that’s what makes it a good trade? you’re right about Luka. But Nico has proven to be a good GM in his young career. this was the worst move he could ah w made and he did it. It’ll either make or most likely break him. im gutted. I can’t even watch the mavs now.

This is doing a solid for your favorite team while breaking your new team down in talent, engagement, and viewership/attendance so that you are closer to moving them to your preferred city for the rebuild.

February 2Feb 2 Guess this is what happens when you let a shoe exec run your sports team. Nico Harrison is an AD simp who had a relationship with him at Nike. Also heard there was a little friction between Luka's "body team" and Mavs training staff. And I find it hilarious Luka employs a "body team." What do they do, nod and tell him it's okay to inhale Onion Rings and Mozzarella sticks and guzzle pitchers of Hefeweizen every night?
February 2Feb 2 What’s going to be hilarious is that on April 9th, there will be a stadium full of Mavs and Lakers fans simultaneously cheering a player wearing Lakers colors, while chanting “fuck Nico Harrison” in unison (just the Mavs fans on that last part). This is going to get very ugly, very quickly. Dude probably needs to go into witness protection.
February 2Feb 2 wilbon on live now so insane entire nba industry doesn't believe it have to go back 60 years to chamberlain trade doncic is only 26 in real time last night no one believed it
February 2Feb 2 Author if this happened in a dynasty fantasy league the other players would lose their minds. i can’t imagine how the other owners are reacting luka being traded for way less than he’s worth in a secret deal where he was only offered to one team.

February 2Feb 2 chamberlain 1 chamberlain 2 kareem this is the biggest deal dallas has ever done why didn't they get a 2nd pick? nico wtf? this is just a 1 for 1 with davis davis & kryie is a great pairing but okc spurs & rockets are all on your ass what are you going to do now?
February 2Feb 2 How does trading Luka facilitate legalized gambling in Texas? I’m failing to connect the dots here. Or how does trading Luka facilitate a team move to Vegas where gambling is legal? Help make this make sense.
