For those who didn't know, Johnston was a USGS scientist, who was studying the strange new bulge on the mountain on May 18, 1980.  He was killed in the blast, and the ridge where he died now bears his name, and there is a great observatory there.

 

He made the famous radio transmission call, "Vancouver!  Vancouver!  This is it!"

Those photos from Mount Adam's were in Nat Geo. Still to this day my favorite issue ever. I was absolutely memorized by that eruption and my fascination with volcanoes began right there.
