From Liberally Lean:

These are incredible photos wereposted by a Fort Worth firefighter yesterday regarding a wreck on 287 at the Saginaw cutoff. That's a guardrail that went all the way through the vehicle. And the driver survived.

The Highway Division of the AG's office will send the driver the bill for the guardrail.

My google AI tells me City of Austin pays 146k / yr.

Not shabby. But definitely an outlier

I like the idea of the sitting around all day thing and going to HeB to go shopping….  But the actual fire fighting is a no for me dawg.

Better yet, at AFD you go 24 on and 48 off. Even better, you have Kelly Days, where you skip a day on, so you have five consecutive days off. Kellys have some weird scheduling but I'll bet there's a Surly who can tell you what it is.

Seems like a lot of firefighters get a side gig of their own going, since they have that extra time off.

Two of my great nephews are firefighters (Austin & Round Rock).

About 10 years ago the Austin nephew spent a scary time late one night during a flashflood just above Barton Springs Pool.
He and his colleague spent a harrowing time at the end oftheir fully extended 100’ over the creek with grappling hooks fishing the body of a drowned tuber caught in the bypass drain intake.

His brother has a lucrative side business designing commercial fire suppression systems.
He & his team spent a lot of time doing water rescue in Houston after hurricanes.
(has a CE degree from UT and a Masters from an East Coast university).

I remember that.  well, I remember one time it happened; I'm sure it's happened more than a few times.

PULSARA TIP: How to Get What You Want

Wasn't sure where to share this but this thread seemed appropriate.

Driving home from a job on Thursday and, off in the distance, I see party lights in the opposing lanes and what looked like a crane or staircase rising from the median to the overpass. As I drew closer, it became apparent that a trailer was hanging from the overpass and still connected to the cab, which was lying in the median on its driver side.

First responders were crowded around the cab, trying to free the driver, who was later air-lifted to a hospital in Utah. He had apparently crashed through the guardrail after swerving to avoid hitting a Mazda SUV that failed to yield. These pics were taken after I'd driven by (they hadn't closed east-bound traffic yet).

Anyway, just a bizarre thing to see. Haven't heard any subsequent updates on the trucker's condition.

To me, this is a true Holy Shit story.   I really though there would be another part to this story that wasn't initially reported.  Some kind of child abuse, drugs, starving kids, something.  Nope. This actually seems to be just some I-know-better-than-you deputy arresting a mon for letting her 10 year old kid walk a mile from home on a road with a speed limit of 35?   Holy Shit.    By those standards every parent of a gen-Xer would have been shot.

Times have changed.

By comparison, I was 12 when I rode my bike over this bridge the first time. Speed Limit 55.  135 feet above the water.  Bicycles and pedestrians welcome.
