I hate Torchys. That taco probably sucks. But…I do miss the tortilla fried catfish con queso at Shady Grove. It shouldn’t have worked, yet it was fantastic.

  • Only reason I go to Torchys is when I'm craving a missionary style green chile pork with extra pickled onions. Comes with both a flour and a fried corn tortilla.

I’ve come around. There’s a location close to my HEB and dog groomer/bakery. It’s a quick, solid snack. The Brushfire is one of the better chicken tacos out there.

I don't think I want baked goods from the same place that does dog grooming.

Don't get me wrong.  A concoction like that is just fine if it's the result of "fucking hell, I wanna make a snack.  Got some leftover grilled salmon in the fridge.  Wonder how that'll taste if I crunch up some of these pistachios on it?"

But goddammit.  There's no great food that we can't utterly enshittify.

Fish filets encrusted in ground seeds or nuts are pretty common in many cuisines.  I don't really see it as a big reach, to put that flavor inside a taco.  I bet it's probably pretty darn good.

Alternative take-- "Pizza?  Now that's what I call a taco!" :)

Yeah.  Nobody here is saying that you can't put food X inside a tortilla and eat the hell out of it.  We are Texan males who have all had too much to drink before.  If it's edible, odds are we've at one point or another wrapped it in a tortilla and eaten it, proudly.

But there's a difference between "I just ate some stuff from the fridge on a tortilla" and "come see our brilliant new taco this month!"  Fucking hell, 95% of these places can't even execute a basic, regular taco (carne asada, carnitas, etc.) for shit.  And certainly not for under $6.

Not a taco but one of the best meals of my life was in Sausalito.  Pistachio encrusted salmon with a blackberry basalmic vingar reduction sauce.

Had friends from out of town who wanted Torchy's and I hadn't even looked at their menu in a minute.

The October Taco of the month: The Ronin is a Japanese-inspired taco special, featuring flame-grilled teriyaki steak, chipotle slaw, grilled onions, cotija cheese, chopped peanuts, sriracha, avocado sauce, and mint, all on a flour tortilla.  I got mine on corn, just preference.

I thought it was great and unexpectedly tasted more like Korean BBQ, but it was a great mix.  I didn't taste the mint, nor did I see that until just now.  I would get this one again. I laugh when people ask for Torchy's; because they instantly make "overpriced white boy hipster tacos" come to mind; but if you're gonna do it, might as well get something you like.

They did.

Also do they still do that August heat challenge where each week the taco gets spicier?

Not in the past couple of years.  They just pick one of them lately and run it all month.

I had the October TOTM, the Japanese-inspired one called Ronin, and it was really tasty.  Maybe a little smaller but not by a ton.  I mean, there are only so many sized of store-bought tortillas to choose from...
