I should preface my picks by saying I like my sitcoms like I like my rock- classic.  I’m probably missing someone obvious, but that said, in descending order:

Archie Bunker

Lucy Ricardo

Maxwell Smart

Michael Scott

Fred Sanford

and the GOAT...

Spoiler

Barney Fife

  • Author

He wasn’t a primary character, but Frank Constanza has a special place somewhere

Archie is an interesting choice for a “favorite.”  Easily the most complex and flawed, but people watched him evolve on their screen and rooted for him to become a better man.  Very reflective of the time the show ran.

Ron Swanson

Leslie Knope

 Andy Dwyer

Michael Scott

Dwight Schrute

Charlie Kelly

Dennis Reynolds

Pierce Hawthorne

Jeff Winger

Lucille Bluth

Max Blum

Chandler Bing

Abed Nadir

Mork from Ork, funny as hell

George Jefferson, tried to be a hardass, but was a softy inside.

Maxwell Klinger/ Radar O'Reilly( equally endearing)

Alex P Keaton, because his hippie parents deserved it.

Arnold Jackson, because hey, he was adopted too.  LOlz.

Kramer

And George and Elaine and even Jerry. Maybe Newman too.

Not the GOAT, but David Puddy from Seinfeld only appeared in 11 episodes and killed it every time. Seemed like he was in more. May be the greatest per minute of screen time.

Vyvyan - The Young Ones

Patsy - Absolutely Fabulous

Bubbles, Jim Lahey, and Randy -Trailer Park Boys

Rev. Jim - Taxi

Col. Flagg - MASH

Det. Yemana - Barney Miller

Cheers - sans Diane & Carla

Some other greats:

Sue Ann Nivens (Betty White) and Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) —MTM show

Hal Wilkerson (the great Bryan Cranston) from Malcolm in the Middle

Dan Fielding (John Laroquette) — Night Court

And Jerry Stiller as Frank Costanza or Arthur Spooner

Dan Fielding is a great call.

I'll add Burt Campbell from Soap.

Cosmo Kramer

Hawkeye   /no comicbook

Alex Keaton was who came to mind first.  Glad to see him already listed by others.

Gilligan

He was like a big brother to me.

Good one, but Howard Borden was better.

Oh god no. He was a dork. I loved that character when I was a kid but now he's just dumb. Newhart carried that show but if you want to pick a secondary character then go with Elliot Carlin.

Artie

Goddammit I should have thought of those. Artie is my leader. +rep

Yes Hawkeye Pierce has got to be up there.

after giving this some thought, Susie Greene has to be near the top of any list.

For your consideration:

"I said let's go get some fucking cheese!"

It's hard to think of that show as a sitcom.

Luther-coach

All Phil Hartman characters on the simpsons

real deal bill McNeal- news radio

Cheers was too good- Sam, Diane, coach, woody, norm, cliff, Frazier.

Another vote for Maxwell Smart

Reverend Jim

Bender B. Rodriguez

Barney Fife

A surprising modern pick thrown in amongst the old classics.  Well done, sir.

Rowan Atkinson and his Black Adder series is my favorite from the 80's-90's on.

Archie is such a piece  of work he's my 70' guy, and it's Andy and Barney from my childhood.

Strong lists above though
