But your post is an opinion. One anyone with common sense would agree with. Mine was a factual statement. There are a thousand watch brands you could have picked to make a comparison, but you named the two that were founded by the same person and are still owned by the same company. There's a reason why people talk about Tudor and Rolex that way. No one would talk about SMU and Texas athletics in the same kind of way. It's a strange analogy to me. I also don't know why you would associate micro brand with Tudor. You didn't state Tudor is a micro brand, but it's implied in your statement.

The funny thing is, I am remarkably indifferent to watches, so I don't really have a dog in the fight. I just like to see comparisons make sense, and words used the way they're meant to be used. Which is very pedantic of me, but there are times I can't help myself, and apparently this is one of them.

You are "remarkably indifferent" to watches, yet you make a long ass post on it. I can tell you have never done a case interview or worked in management consulting. Try to focus on the main point and keep things short.

The point is the brand value even if they may look the same to a layman. In this case, even if they are owned by the same parent. If you already own the much better brand, you are not going to downgrade.

That was not a long post.

I'm typing on a message board. Not doing a case interview or working in management consulting. My father, who did work in management consulting, could make some unbelievably long posts, so I'm not sure what that proves. His posts were way more entertaining than mine, but he always did get his fair share of TLDR or the like.

I thought the analogy was shit. There's an obvious reason people talk about Tudor and Rolex that way regardless of the merits of the argument. Also, Tudor is not a microbrand.

Oh, and Del Conte is not accepting the athletic director job at SMU, which is the first step towards dumbness that led to the rest of this dumbness.

Why is a private school AD job better than a public one?

Would you trade in your watch on the right for the one on the left? Sure, the brand on the left makes some nice watches too and some of them look eerily similar to the ones from the brand on the right. Do you take the phone call from the dealer when you're wearing the watch on the right?

I also think the student and faculty demonstrations related to the war in the middle east took a toll on Jay.

I would compare  A&M to Omega. They don't understand why their brand is not stronger than Rolex even with all the money they spend on promotion. Perhaps the fact that they keep churning out so many watches every year and anyone can buy their watches have something to do with the brand dilution?

The Speedy Pro might be the most iconic watch of all time. Nothing A&M does is the most iconic of anything positive.

The Speedmaster gives Omega skins on the wall. A&M is more like Shinola in this comparison.

If for any reason CDC was to not be our AD, I’d suggest Oliver Luck. He’s already had the role at WVU (I think) plus they’re Texans since Andrew was growing up.

I guess if we're married to car company analogies, the best one I can think of is Tudor is Land Rover, and Rolex is Range Rover. Doesn't work exactly, but that's the best I can come up with.

And he was right to ask that. Chicken shit to make him come in and fire Mack as his first act. That should have been handled by the folks in Bellmont who let it fall apart so fast.

Actually, maybe a better example is that Tudor are the Porsches made by Volkswagen, and Rolex the Porsches made by Porsche?

I didn’t say you said that. You said there was a possibility it could happen. You said this because you’re an SMU douche that must remind the board you’re an SMU douche at most opportunities. Then you changed the thread title to obfuscate the idiocy you originated. Because you’re an SMU douche.

What the fuck are you talking about. The thread title was "Hart out at SMU - Hartzell to lead AD search" or something like that. How is that "idiocy"? I started a thread completely innocuously so that we could discuss what is a huge AD opening at a school in Texas where the former president at Texas will be leading the search. Then you fucks took it completely off the rails and I changed the thread title because I thought it was funny and because no one was talking about the SMU job you were all talking about hot wheels and watches and shit.

Do I need to comment for the seventh fucking time that I don't think CDC is taking the SMU job and that Texas is maybe the best AD job in the country? Apparently - because there are mongoloids like you that get offended by any and everything and make everything about yourselves.

I am a HUGE Texas fan and an SMU alum - no shit I'm going to be involved in a discussion that heavily involves the future and past of both institutions. "Oh no the SMU grad is talking about SMU again! What a fucking loser!"

Quit being such a fucking twat. This isn't high school. No one gives a fuck.

Of course it's a possibility you lunatic. Hartzell literally - months ago - left Texas for SMU. That's why I started the thread - that's why there is discussion being generated.

The discussion is manufactured. By you. Hartzell left for very good reason. Only a moron would equate his situation with CDC’s non-situation. Nothing against Tudor and I do love some of their watches and am hoping to add the Flemingo Blue to my watch collection. My point comparing Rolex to Tudor was that one is the #1 brand and the other is a micro brand. Tudor knows its place in the luxury watch pecking order unlike some SMU grads who think they belong in the same league as UT. Someone owning a Rolex Pepsi is not going to trade it in for Tudor Black Bay 58 GMT even though Black Bay copied the Rolex GMT design.

This is the worst of your already turrible watch analogies

How so? I am sorry if I offended you if you own an Omega. I love my Aqua Terra but most Omega watches don't hold their value over time. You can buy a brand new omega on the Gray market cheaper than their MSRP, and that's because of oversupply, similar to the oversupply of A&M graduates. With every analogy you can poke holes, but I saw enough similarities in their brand dilution to make the comparison.

it's like the same group owns both... like Texas does OU and aggy

17 minutes ago, pops said:

Yeah, it's not perfect. But there are also Land Rover models. The Land Rover models compared to the Range Rover models. They use some of the same parts, the same processes, and some people argue you're basically buying the same thing for a lesser price, when normal people feel like that's really a justification for spending less money. Same thing with Tudor/Rolex.

The thing is, Rolex was started first, then Hans Wilford founded Tudor as a company specifically designed to sell very nice watches at a slightly more affordable price.

Going back to the original athletic department analogy, Rolex is like UT-Austin, Tudor is like UT-Arlington. There's not really an equivalent car company.

But to compare Texas and SMU athletic departments, a better analogy would be to say Texas is a Rolex, and SMU is some other nice but not exclusive brand. Frankly, SMU athletics isn't even that great, although they've had some recent success. Seiko maybe? SMU is the Seiko of athletic departments.
