Friendship - Paul Rudd, Tim Robinson, A24, May 2025

At first I thought this had to be the trailer for a new season of I Think You Should Be Leaving, but no it’s real.  Rotten Tomatoes has it at 87% of 23 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.2/10

Am I the only person in America who hates Tim Robinson? He has the potential to be an amazing comedian, but I hate the over-the-top yelling. ITYSL was absolutely terrible. The Detroiters was OK, mainly because Sam Richardson carried his ass.

It’s possible he’s just not for you. ITYSL is up there with Seinfeld and Curb for me.

You're not alone. I just don't get it. He's like a fucking one-trick pony doing a really annoying (AND LOUD) schtick, and I've been completely flabbergasted at his wide appeal. There's nothing remotely clever about it.

Tim Robinson is one of the least funny mainstream comedians out there. This movie looks like pretentious meta crap, not one laugh or punchline in the entire trailer

Thank you for hopping on this wagon.

I posted as much on a thread in here last year I believe after trying to watch ITYSL. I saw one funny skit in 4 episodes I think (babysitter hit & run or something). It’s just painfully unfunny and it doesn’t hold a candle to Key & Peele.

this might be the greatest movie ever made

It’s both stupider and smarter than you think it is. The Baby of the Year sketch from season 1 as an example is insanely stupid but it is loaded with raw elemental humor in every second. It’s incredibly dense. But also stupid. It’s like trying to explain why The Big Lebowski is good - you can’t get there by talking about the plot or trying to make sense of what is happening.

I’m also surprised by the mainstream appeal. Some of it is because it is so ready made for memes and the Internet. And I suspect Tim and Eric leaked more widely into the mainstream than I realized.

To outright dismiss the guy is a mistake.

It's not like I haven't given the guy and his brand of humor a shot or have dismissed the guy. In fact, I've watched every sketch of every season of ITYSL, and it's not like I don't appreciate absurd, irreverent, and clever wit. I just think he's kinda shitty at it -- at least to my satisfaction. I'll admit to not having seen The Detroiters, so I'll try to check it out and maybe change my opinion.

Anyway, it's not a huge deal, and I'll likely watch this show when it comes out on streaming. I just wanted to chime in and let HOTB know he's not alone.

It is so awkward to even watch, therein lies the beauty. And don't judge Detroiters by ITYSL. It's a pretty good natured, sweet sitcom about a couple of buddies and how incredibly stupid they are. Good plot lines with much more subtle hijinks compared to ITYSL.

On the topic of the movie, I’m excited. It could suck, but I like the premise from what I can tell.

This hit the festivals last year and the buzz was that it was one of the funniest movies in years. The marketing is pretty interesting with the horror style but with pull quotes about how funny it is.

I’m excited for it.

Robinson is annoying in everything he does and has a most punchable face. I’ll probably still watch this because it’s A24.

bolverk probably likes sloppy steaks.

DE2ROIT!

My wife has no idea what Devraux is and why I randomly sing that word.

I’m excited for this movie because I love Rudd and Robinson, but also it’s just great that someone is making a comedy.

Detroiters in my mind is the most broke ass, over the top parody of Mad Men imaginable. It’s nearly perfect.

Some ITYSL highlights:

- Dog ear haircut

- Pay it forward drive thru

- Haunted house

- Designated driver crooner

- Richard Nixon mask

Tim Robinson will always be a legend for the NBA on NBC pitch song.

The ITYSL hat sketch in the courtroom is the hardest I’ve ever laughed. That and Corncob TV get me every time…

Same. I was eating an apple during Brian’s hat and when he rolled it down his arm I almost choked and died. Hardest I’ve ever laughed at something on a screen.

Man alive. I should have included those 2. Definitely in my top 10. We work almost exclusively on Microsoft Teams chat, so I can just see the court room conversation unfolding in my head.

The Corncub, I didn’t do shit meme/gif should be in the Smithinson.

You're not part of the Turbo Team! Don't run! You don't run with us! We're the ones who run! Until you're a part of this Turbo Team, walk slowly!

I don't think Robinson is a brilliant comedic actor per se (and at times I find him annoying) but his writing and creativity is really good and pretty unique.

The club aqua/club haunted house sketch with Tim Heidecker is great as is the one where he's a hot dog. Assuming those are ITYSL? I've never done a deep dive on that show but I've seen a ton of his stuff on Instagram and YouTube.

I saw an interview where he mentioned that was a huge chunk of the budget for that season.  And it shows, lots of extras and a lot of locations.

His “I don’t know what any of this shit is and I’m fucking scared” in the parking lot scene kills me every time.

The dark haired girl with the tables from this sketch (and others) kills me, she seems legitimately unhinged in all her scenes.

"Honk if you're horny" is up there for me, I always love the ones with Conner O'Malley. Excited that he is in this movie too.

Patti Harrison is unhinged. Love her. Her goblin noises in the Capital Room sketch might be the best moment in the series. Lol she got kicked off of twitter years ago for switching her profile pic to Nabisco and posting this after getting verified

I agree Tim Robinson has a punchable face, and because of that I didn't want to give in. But I sat through ITYSL and it got me. Obviously not every sketch, but it's worth watching every episode. Also, Detroiters is more sane and maybe even more enjoyable to me. He's hilarious, teaming up with Paul Rudd seems like a no-brainer, and I will watch this movie.

Yeah I watched a few eps and it's hit or miss but so is basically every sketch comedy show. The opening of the series where he's pulling the door off its hinges had me dying.
